I bought all three of the Ghilbi films and I loved them all. As most people have said, The Cat Returns is definatley the weakest of the bunch, but I felt Porco Rosso was my favorite. Nausicaä, was WONDERFUL and the best out of the bunch in terms of quality, but, Porco was the most enjoyable, I thought.

I recently saw Porco Rosso and I have to say, it was surprisingly great. Great characters and locales.

I watched Nausicaa last night and it's a great movie, though I don't think it's Miyazaki's best film. (Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke are my favorite) I'll probaly watch it again over the weekend.
I've watched about an hour of Porco Rosso and I think it's pretty good so far, I need to finish it...

I own Nausicaa, but haven't watched the Disney DVD yet. I saw it 2 years ago in Japaneese. Haven't watched Porco Roso yet, either. I liked Cat Returns, but like Whispers of the Heart much better. It wasn't a sequel, but kind of a spin off. Anyways, I guess my favorites are Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Princess Mononoke. I own all of the Disney released ones plue Grave of the Fireflys. I can't wait until the next wave or until Howl's Moving Castle comes to theaters.

I thought Kiki's and Spirited Away were excellent from the first wave but Nausicaa absolutely blew me away. Best animated storyline I have ever seen and probably my second favorite animated. Use the search function and you can see plenty of discussions we have had on ghibli films including.

Spirited away gave me a bad impression on Anime. I won't be watching any of his films for the near future...

Well, I wouldn't think that's very fair, DisneyFan. I mean, how do you know you don't like certain foods if you've never tasted them?

But seriously, Miyazaki's films (and the films of Studio Ghibli on a whole) are nothing short of wonderful. Beautifully crafted stories. I absolutely adore them. ^_^ And the funny thing is, I too am not a huge huge fan of Spirited Away - there are certainly other Ghibli/Miyazaki films that I'd watch first.

But anyhoo, don't dismiss an entire studio's worth of films just because one happened to leave a bad taste in your mouth. I say, for lighter fare, try My Neighbor Totoro. Simply magical. And for something more "robust" and mature - not to mention a wee bit violent - try Princess Mononoke. If you don't like those films, then Studio Ghibli would assuredly not be for you.

Thats interesting, I think I know what you mean, I feel the same way about movies like Atlantis, Aladdin, Bambi and others. These Disney movies gave me a bad impression also.

From these 3 new Disney/Ghibli releases, after seeing them a few times with the family Porco Rosso is my personal fav along with Castle in the Sky... but IMO ALL studio Ghibli films have always given us excellent impressions and are GREAT! entertainment:)

Spirited Away was my first introduction to Miyazaki and then I watched Nausicaa...and Nausicaa is one of my top 10 animated films now.

I'll give it a try.

Hey there, The Cat Returns was a great and awesome movie. That was my first Wave 2 Ghibli/Disney movie I bought, and I can't praise it enough for it's cleverness and charm.

All the voice actors really gave depth to their characters, especially Anne Hathaway as Haru and Cary Elwes as the Baron. This movie seemed to me to be better than a lot of the crap found out there today.

Cat Returns was also my first Wave 2 movie. I like Anne Hathaway, so I chose Cat Returns first. I'm just saying that Totoro should be in Wave 3.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind: 4/5

This was my third Miyazaki film, and as my score indicates, I liked it quite a bit. The message, animation, acting, landscape, and imagination in Nausicaa are all excellent.

I didn't quite catch all of the geopolitical situation. A second watching might help out with that. My other minor complaint could just be an American/Japanese cultural difference. I wish we hadn't been shown Nausicaa's bare rear. Age notwithstanding, I think panties would have been a sensible choice for her to wear as she flies on her glider or stands in the wind.

She is wearing pants. Look at her bare hand against them in this shot.

Those would have to be the tightest pants I have ever seen!

Now that it's been pointed out, I can see the clothing, but it's far from obvious in motion. You could easily think it's merely an uneven tan. Anyway, it is just a minor issue. Nausicaa is a great story that movie fans should see.
