I disagree. For me it's good money being wasted. Every person has different opinions regarding the matter. It has nothing to do with money...

Jens wrote:Oh come on reyquila, stop with the money thing... People that don't buy them have money enough, but just don't buy them because they have an opinion about sequels or just principles... There may be a small part that don't buy them because of the money, but that's a very small part.

Anyway... Tarzan II's plot seems very adultish to me actually. I don't see why everyone has something against the plot? I think it's very original! Altough I hope the whole movie isn't away from Kerchak and Kala... The new characters will probably be less developed (because of the small budget). But I have hope for this movie, a lot of hope.
I have hope and I'll buy it because I'm a collector !! And because my kids love all this movies!! And because I have the money to pay for them !!

If my daughter wants it, I am very likely to buy it.

Uh, hello? Please don't respond to MY post with a tone of disrespect and complete lack of English literacy, then go so far as to imply that I'm either cheap or poor. I am neither; yet some of the made-for-video sequels are not up to my standards as a Disney collector. I don't want a bunch of cheap dvds in my house just because they say Disney on the cover. That's all.

I read the review and this movie sounds horrible.

Oh my god Luke... I have never ever read a review of yours that is so the opposite of my opinion. I mean, come on? Did you have a bad day today or what? Tarzan II isn't all bad... OK, there are a few moments where it's really obvious that the movie is aiming for kids, but the movie has it's good points too. The scene that you found so "unintentionally humorous" is one of the best scenes every made in a DTV. If that didn't get to you even a little (knowing the history of Tarzan and his mother from the original movie AND the piece in Tarzan II), I don't know what you were thinking when you saw this movie.

Of course, it's a lot easier to draw a certain conclusion when you see some things in the beginning of the movie that you don't like (sure, I wouldn't have liked the movie either if I did that too) than to contradict yourself and saying that some things are very good and some things are very bad... I understand. Just don't forget that a lot of people are now probably hesitating to even SEE the movie (and therefore will never know how good or bad it is), as YOU think it's not worthy to the original movie. Oh well, I guess that's life?

It SOUNDS horrible, but is it really? You should be the judge.

Jens, I have to note that your avatar is somewhat of an ad for DisneyToons Studios. So maybe you're just saying that because you like the sequels and don't want to insult them? I can understand someone liking Tarzan IIand I'm not trying to put you down, but...

I watch the sequels with a critical eye and I do not accept everything that comes out of the DisneyToon Studios just because it's from them. I do like the studios and think they are doing their best to provide the Disney fans with decent sequels (their quality is increasing every day). To me, they still have that touch of pixie dust (magic) like the old WDFA had. Is it the handdrawn animation? A part of it, yes... But I compare them mostly to the old WDFA days when the studio was making so much progress every day. But you really don't want to get me started on the DisneyToon Studios ;)

Anyway... I am not saying that Tarzan II is a masterpiece, but it is certainly not a bad sequel. It is really worth watching if you are open for it. If you're not, you will probably -just like Luke- end up watching the whole movie with an "Feature Animation eye" (and that's not the way you should watch any of the sequels, IMO).

Okay. Well, which sequels are your favorites and least favorites?

I should probably be discussing this in a new thread...

I edited my previous post a little to more represent my thoughts on the DisneyToon Studios...

My favorites are Return to Neverland, Jungle Book 2, The Lion King 1 1/2, The Lion King II, Mulan 2 and Tarzan II. My least favorites are without a doubt The Hunchback of the Notre Dame II, Tarzan & Jane (well it was treated like a sequel, so it counts) and Pocahontas II (the story just doesn't make up for the awful animation). I bet there are others that I like and don't like, but I don't really keep a list ;)

I read the review for Tarzan 2, like all sequels it looks unimpressive! I don't think I will even bother renting it, after all Tarzan and Jane was one of the worst films I ever saw.

Though I've basically said this already, I totally agree.

You can NOT compare Tarzan and Jane to this. Tarzan II is leaps and bounds ahead of Tarzan and Jane, both in animation and story. I'm not forcing you to rent it, but I think you shouldn't let 1 opinion about this movie bug you too much.

I'm still very reluctant to watch this, because I don't like sequels very much. However, I'll listen to a few more opinions.

Good review! Well, based on your opinion and Jens', I don't know what to do. This one will definately not be one of my blind buys, since the plot doesn't really sound interesting to me. I'll wait for it to come on Disney Channel, and then see how I feel about it then. After all, Lion King 1 1/2 came on like a month after it came to DVD, right?

Oh how ironic this will sound.
Good review to a possibly horrible(?) movie, Luke.

I'm still too tempted to buy this. I probably will, but after reading that review, it will just sit on the shelf. And if anyone asks why I dare waste my money on this DVD, the answer is..."Because I want to. Because I can."

I suggest you to rent it first.

You could buy a better DVD with that movie

Like I said in the review, I watched it twice and that was over a 3-day period, so it'd have to be three bad days. And they weren't, but that wouldn't make a difference anyway. The movie disappointed me both as a follow-up to Tarzan and on its own merits. Comparisons to the original Tarzan are inevitable when you have a movie called Tarzan II and surely this tries to live up to that spirit - why else draw the characters the same way, have Phil Collins do the music, etc? Even as far as the direct-to-videos go, this is one of the weaker ones that I've seen, though to be fair, I've only seen some of the ones that people often label as the worst.

DisneyToon Studios may have a smaller budget and they don't need visuals that stand up on a 20 foot screen, but their primary goal is still to entertain and Tarzan II doesn't succeed in that regard. It's irrelevant to say that they put effort into it. All movies should be made by people working hard and presumably they are. But not all movies turn out good. Clearly, this movie could have been improved substantially, most notably in the writing phase. I feel like they're only trying to win the approval of young viewers and that always limits how good the final product can be. And like I said in the review, not everything was bad. The voice cast was mostly suitable, the Phil Collins songs were good, and the animation was satisfactory.

Nonetheless, I'd rather have people pass on Tarzan II and not be disappointed than to make it sound better than I think it is and have them be disappointed in my skills as a reviewer. Sure, it's just my opinion but don't dismiss it because it's different from yours. I don't think other critics will be very favorable to this one either, but if they are, I won't ponder how they came to the wrong conclusion or anything like that.
