I have several problems with the Beauty and the Beast DVD. First of all, the animated menus take too long to get to the regular menu and you can't skip through them.

The Work-in-Progress edition should have been included on the second disc, because there are a few compression problems when watching the Special Edition on a high-quality TV.

And the second disc contains long menus and lots of fluff. What was the deal with the "Learn about Disney movies" infomercial, er, feature? This is a BATB DVD, what was it for?

The documentary's segments are repeated in other places. That is a waste of time.

Most of the features were obviously aimed at kids. Just stupid games and Disney Channel commercials.

Also it was made in 1.66:1 but the DVD is cropped to 1.85:1. And I couldn't find the original theatrical trailer anywhere.

Well Dacp I can't disagree with what you say. On my player you can skip all the menu fluff by hitting the chapter skip button ( >| ).

Also, thankfully, the UK disc (I have both R1 and R2) has better image quality with less mosquito noise around lines caused by compression.

This is specifically at the request of director's Gary Trousdale & Kirk Wise. The same was done for their Hunchback of Notre Dame release. In fact, all Disney films (apart from the 'scope ratio films like Atlantis) are now filmed at 1.66:1 for the simple reason that is the ratio Disney's CAPS system uses. That's why the DTV features are also 1.66:1. When filmed the filmmakers know and accept that the picture will be matted to roundabout 1.85:1 in most cinemas. Apparently Trousdale and Wise compose for this ratio and prefer the final release to be this ratio too. I don't think the slight matting is a reasonable complaint.

Other than the issue of placing the Work-in-Progress version on the second disc, I also had alot of problems with the supplementals, which I thought lacked much depth.

Documentaries briefly went into topics and then just abruptly ends without going much in-depth. The character design section omits Gaston to name a character and alot of others. You learn very little about the addition of "Human Again." You learn little about the dance in the ballroom. You get a tribute to Howard Ashman but practically nothing on the songs that he and Alan Menken wrote. Where are the trailers? In the Snow White DVD, they really wanted to push the role of that film in Disney history but they make no attempt to do so in the Beauty and the Beast DVD.

I own the laserdisc collector's edition of The Lion King and just looking at the deleted scenes/concepts section illustrates the lack of material on the DVD. The following is the list of deleted scenes/concepts from the LD.

- Simba's Presentation
- Timon and Pumbaa Find Simba
- "Warthog Rhapsody"
- "Hakuna Matata" (Timon's Verse)
- Bug Football
- "Be Prepared" (Reprise)
- "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" (2 different versions included)
- Simba Decides to Return
- The Fight

If the DVD is missing half the deleted scenes, I'd be really worried about the quality and depth of the supplementals that The Lion King DVD will have.

geez, I opened this thread thinking someone was asking this question... not realising it was 2 years old. Now I feel really stupid for voting in the poll

If you don't have any of the Lion King movies I say go for it then.

Thing is I really don't like the other two movies so I just went for the regular edition on its own. Of course, you gotsta have a slipcover though!

I bought the Lion King when it originally came out on VHS as I didn't have a DVD back then. When I bought a DVD, I bought the Lion King Movie Collection and it was a good deal at Wal-Mart.

I only got The Lion King DVD and not the gift set.
