What is the OAR of this movie? While watching it last night, it occured to me that it premiered to video and would have most likely been 1.33:1. But here it is on DVD at 1.66:1. Plus I was noticing how it looked cropped on the top and bottom. If you go look at the first screen shot on the review page:
http://www.ultimatedisney.com/lionking2.html
you can't even see Simba and Kiara's paws. Why would the animators draw the entire animals for this frame, but not their paws? The most obvious example of this to me while watcing the movie was a scene with only half the moon. It was really awarkward looking.
I think this DVD release has been matted. Does anyone know anything about this?

I thought there was some unusual framing too (going back to the original DVD, even), but 1.66:1 is the ratio Disney likes for animation, even apparently for DTV productions in 1998. The film did receive theatrical distribution in Europe, too.

Am I the only one that finds it strange that they used arabic numeral for two instead of the roman numeral? They used "II" for most of their other sequels, and even Mulan's sequel will be a "II" Not really a big deal, but I wonder why the change?
Anywho, I previously only owned the VHS, so the DVD transfer just looks incredible to me. I still think the animation is a little off and not as good as 1.5's, but I do like it better now than I did before. One by One, on the other hand, is superbly animated, and really is worth the price of admission alone.

I think it was for continuity with the "1 1/2" of TLK 1.5, and since that wasn't in roman, I just assume Disney would change TLK II to TLK "2". If I recall properly, some of the early artwork showed the "II", before it was changed to "2".

I haven't yet bought the DVD, but I just wanted to ask a question to those who do. In the opening credits on the VHS, it says "Walt Disney Home Entertainment Presents." I was wondering if it is still like that on the DVD, or if they had changed it to "Walt Disney Pictures" because they use that for all the DTV sequels now.

They've changed it to "Walt Disney Presents". I don't know about the region 1 DVD, but the Brazilian version has no Disney DVD logo before the start of the movie.
I've gotten the DVD today, mainly because of "One By One". I hadn't seen the movie itself in some years, and it is as weak as I've remembered it. It's not as bad as others DTV out there, but considering this is a Lion King sequel, it is hard to sit through the clumsy animation and the childsh story.
Just a question: is the making of featurette on the region 1 version diferent from the region 4 version? According to Luke's review, the making of on the North American version runs around 7 minutes, and our version runs for 10 minutes.
BTW, has anyone who has the two versions of the DVD compared both versions to see if you could find any animation enhancements?
Regarding the aspect ratio issue, I watched the movie and I also noticed the framing is kinda "tight". Unfortunately, I don't have the VHS anymore to compare them and see which version has more picture information.

I have both versions, I think a member here mentioned in another post a animation changed of kovu when they meet the crocodiles.

I think Thiago mentioned the change.
It seems that a short segment after the Upendi scene has been cut.
lionking.org has an explanation.

Yes, Thiago PE did it, I was just curious to know if anybody else has compared both versions.
And can anyone check the exact lenght of the region 1 making of? The region 4 is 10 minutes and 4 seconds long.

Luke said that the "Proud of Simba's Pride" featurette is "under seven minutes." It looks ike Disney cut three minutes out ??
I'm still waiting for my copy of Simba's Pride with the lithograph. It's might be in a UPS warehouse.

Okay...I dunno why my last post failed to show so here I go again...
The answer to your question is that they changed the opening logo to "Walt Disney Presents". The reason for this was because a year after the VHS release, the movie was to air on the Wonderful World of Disney. It made no sense to use "Walt Disney Home Entertainment Presents" for a movie airing on TV so it was changed to "Walt Disney Presents"
I guess they didnt feel like changing it to "Walt Disney Pictures Presents" for the DVD since so many DTV sequels would use that title in later years (ack ack) They couldve just cut and paste the logo from the original Lion King

Thanks, Toonaspie. I bought the DVD yesterday and just finished watching it. I had forgotten how good this movie is and the DVD transfer looks really good. The colors are very vibrant and the animation dosen't seem as choppy as it did on the VHS. I wonder if they touched it up a bit. I also didn't remember the CG fire. It looks kinda fake and I wish they would have just animated it, but oh well. The second disc isn't very long. I took a little over a half hour to do everything on it. But it was more than I expected for a re-release of a DTV film. Why can't Disney do this with Home on the Range?

Well, after watching the film from my free NetFlix trial rentals (:P), I agree that, indeed, those 2 sequences of "re-animation"
are changed. The Kovu "screaming take" is completely redone (and consequently, does not match up to the audio

), while it seems that about 1 second has been shaved off the end of the "Upendi" sequence, cutting off the awkward "gait switch" of Kovu and Kiara as they move from walking in-beat to the music to a regular walk. In the '98 release, that 1 second showed a fast, awkward switch to a regular walk before the scene faded - I actually think it looks better now. LOL
But I really wonder why they bothered to go back and change Kovu's screaming take. Why
just that? Why didn't they go back and get the placement of Kovu's scar correct, in the many scenes where it's missing or on the wrong side? Why didin't they reanimate Zira's fatal fall so she wasn't
smiling? e_e
Bah - Disney's "confusion tactics" strike again.

I have yet to see watch my DVD due to lack of DVD player. You mean they didnt reanimate Zira's fall? Man, that looked so cheap and so fake. They just shrunk the character cell to make it look like she was falling!
Although there was no need, I guess changing the scream take improved it a little (the first one did look very awkward but it didnt bother me)
I cant determine whether the Upendi cut off was a good thing until I watch it

Hi!
talking about Lions and cut-scenes, I just find out on the Lion King DVD than in the scene of the crocodriles on the song "I just can´t wait to be king", the birds inside the croc´s mouth on the VHS fly away...but on the DVD they´re just fat birds trying to jump....
does anybody know why does this happened?

Hehehe, I really laughed during this scene while I was watching the movie the other day, so bad it looked. All in all, not a really bad movie... just weak and unescessary. And I wonder if the animators ever looked at Simba's original model sheets.

Aparently the directors have never been much satisfied with the original scene, so they asked for changes when they have the chance to restore the movie for the IMAX re-releases. The same applies to the watterfall on the "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" sequence and some other minor animation.
