I re-watched this film the other night because I got addicted to looking through screencaps of Cruella’s animation. Betty Lou Gerson’s voice is just…ugh… divine! And Cruella is still phenomenal—I know, I know, brand new information right there. But I enjoy how many of Walt’s female villains are actually quite attractive? I know Cruella is bony and her angry face is hideous, but she is often beautiful at certain points, too, just like the Queen and Maleficent (the latter is the best-looking, imo). I always wondered why Cruella didn’t die at the end (or, rather, that it wasn’t left unanswered whether she died or not)? Kind of weird to me how the car was topless, and she wasn’t harmed at all by the crash. Yeah, yeah, it's a movie.

Btw, as a child I was absolutely obsessed with Cruella’s car. I actually ended up getting into Hot Wheels cars because of the film; I would always get cars that looked like hers (or other old-fashioned cars). I have a lot of merchandise for this film, TLK, and Hercules (dwarfed of course by the merch. for TLM) that my mother bought while I was a child, too.

This is just one of my favorite movies, so many great things to say about it, and that care is at least half the reason I love this movie. :P Love Nanny and Pongo so much, too, and Roger/Anita are incredibly cute together. Actually, I think this is my personal favorite Verna Felton performance (with the matriarch elephant from Dumbo coming second). The character’s just so likable and take-charge, but never obnoxious (like Flora and the Fairy Godmother tend towards, imo)—I love her. It’s always sad for me to hear that Walt hated the aesthetic of the “scratchy” films because the look of this film is gorgeous to me. I love the way the streets look in particular. The snowy rivers, snow-covered roads, and the snowbank Cruella drives down into at the end are also highlights as far as the scenery goes.

EDIT: Oh, man. LOL Somehow I mixed up Verna Felton and Martha Wentworth.

When you wrote "care", did you mean "car"? I didn't know this was one of your favorite movies. For me, I don't like it a lot and think it's overrated, but maybe that's because I like fantasy more. I did definitely like Cruella, though, and yes, the art is super cool, and I don't think Walt should have been so dismissive of it (even though I feel he wanted his name to mean "lush" and "rich" and "sleek" and "beautiful" like his past films). I also like Roger and Anita. But yea, Cruella is just awesome and one of the best things Disney's created.

It's always been there with Pinocchio and Cinderella whenever I rank my favorites. :) I think the princess films just lend themselves to conversation more--comparing soundtracks, comparing villains, heroines, love interest, castles, romance, etc. Other films don't draw those same easy discussion points, I think. I'm hesitant to give an set answer outside of Ursula > Lady Tremaine as my top two--because my rankings often shift a little upwards, a little downwards between rankings--but I think I'd put Cruella as my third-favorite villain, unless we were to count natural threats like Monstro. Her, Yzma, and Hades are right there in the same area for me. Sometimes they switch places. Ursula definitely has the most in common with Cruella of the older villains; the Queen would be next.

Interesting that Deja compared the early design to Julie Andrews. I think it looks a little like what Belle turned out like thirty years later. I'm actually not surprised to learn she was asked to read for Cruella first. That's probably how Anita turned out perfect, because Anita has to sound somewhat posh like Cruella for it to be believable they'd have been friends. I've always liked Anita. I mean, she (like Perdita) is unfortunately not as well-defined as her male love interest, imo, but I do like her.

Thanks for sharing those! I love Milt's initial design for her-- I love her final design (and now I'll never not see Anita as Julie Andrews!), but I like the hair and outfit on the early design. And I love that Andreas is friends with Lisa Davis! I interviewed her for this site years ago, and it was the hugest pleasure.

Amazingly, I never saw the Julie Andrews resemblance until someone pointed it out, probably here on this website. And like Amy, I can’t unsee it. I know they’ve always said it was a coincidence, but Julie was already making prolific appearances on late night shows and TV specials in the late 50’s. And her Anita-esque profile (the long jaw and distinctive nose) had already been famously caricatured by Al Hirschfeld. I’m just saying, it’s not entirely impossible that Milt Kahl came across the young, British musical star on TV or in print and her appearance actually did inspire the design of his contemporary British character. Well, I like to think it did anyway.

Sometimes I wish Julie had voiced an animated Disney character in her youth but I like to think we got Anita instead.

I actually love Kanine Krunchies. What's My Crime? on the other hand always confused me. I figured they must be making fun of certain celebrities from back then, but I had no idea who they were. It's still sort of funny even without the context. It's weird the way popularity of old films ebbs and flows. In the '90s, this got so much attention from Disney (partly because people wanted more of it--supply and demand, basically). These days, nothing outside the old films that make up the Disney Princess line seem to get any attention.

"Force of nature" is a good description of Cruella. It's sad to realize that we will probably never get another villain that's successful and memorable out of Disney ever again. This generation's animators and story writers clearly don't have it in them. I blame the PIXAR infestation more than anything else, but the death of hand-drawn animation is partly to blame since it caused a departure of most of the animators at Disney who might've worked with those who came from before. The new ones clearly had no interest in learning from anyone.

Me neither! I must have read about it and it's probably also mentioned in the bonus features of the DVD, but I hadn't realized it was the same actress as Mary Lazarus from Sister Act or the voice of Laverne in Hunchback.
