The 1st Pokemon movie was quite successful at the box office.
The first Pokémon movie was quite an abomination. I'm talking about quality anime of course.

The original Japanese version of the 1st Pokemon movie was surprisingly very dark and very good. The US version I agree was an abomination.

I remember reading last year that "Howl's Moving Castle" was screened at a high profile film festival - can't remember if it was Cannes or not - but I DO remember that following the screening it got a standing ovation! Can't wait to see it.

Unless it's affiliated with the US as a popular kids cartoon, it is normal for high quality anime to make as little as $10,000 here because the high quality anime is usually given limited releases in other countries.

Spirited Away is the 5th highest grossing anime even though it only made $10 million over here. It's adding those numbers with the rest of the world that makes a difference. The same way that we expect combining gross of all other countries to make as much or more as an American movie made in the US.
WHEW! Sorry for the confusion. Anyway I do think that Howl will make much more money since Spirited Away added huge numbers to the Miyazaki following.
Howl's Moving Castle to be released June 10th!

Thanks to Box Office Mojo!
This is great news that Disney has finally released the tentative date for this movie, instead of just in June.
Unfortunately Howl will have to fight another kids movie this weekend, in The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl (3D). Also coming out that weekend are: Heights, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and 5x2. Could of Disney of picked a busier weekend?

Disney in 2005 is going to make me combust from sheer happiness.
Such an excellent year this will be, if Disney keeps to all their promised release dates. (:

The weekend isn't so bad. I'll see this and then catch Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The others I don't care for so it's no big deal for me. I hope Howl can beat Shark Boy and Lava Girl.

I will definately be seeing this one! I let Spirited Away go by on the big screen, but at the time, I didn't know Miyazaki was a master of animation! So excited!

That was a really nice trailer. The score gave me goosebumps through it. Although I still don't know much about the film's plot (and I really don't want to in order to make the experience more fresh), I'm still very much looking forward to this film. The animation seems to be the best Studio Ghibli's ever turned out. Also, Miyazaki seems to have warmed over to CGI. I read somewhere that he detested it, but there were a few CG elements in Spirited Away, and now Howl's Moving Castle seems to be chock full of it.

To me it seems that Miyazaki is using CGI as a tool where it really is needed, and he doesn't overuse just because he has the ability to do so. Howl looks absolutely amazing, and considering how good the book which it's based upon, I can't see how this movie could turn out anything else than fantastic.

I think the narrator needs...to...speak...a...little...faster.

i saw it back in the Feb,i think it's very different from Spirited Away and i can't even compare them. i think this one is more back to the old "castle in the sky" style, but for sure more deep and hunting!

Great trailer and find!

I am so looking foward to this. Hayao Miyazaki has to rank somewhere near the top in the list of great internation directors. Spirited Away was a real epiphany to me. I realized that animation could be even more compelling that live action while using live action techniques. The art of Spirited Away was amazing, I thought I was looking at a moving art museum! The last time I experienced such a stylized sensation on the big screen was Pocahontas. Hopefully Hayoa gets rave reviews to sustain him through awards season, hopefully culminating in a second Oscar, or at least nomination.

Saw the movie months ago and believe me, you guys are in for a treat! The animation is gorgeous, the characters are terrific and the story, while not quite up there with Spirited Away, is still wonderful. What I really like about Miyazaki's style is his absolute attention to even the smallest detail when it comes to his films. Little things that you normally never see in an animated film..... the way you see Sen tapping her shoe into place just before running off to find Haku, or the way that Sophie brushes the lint off her skirt after straightening the hatshop....these are gestures that you take for granted with live action films and normally are considered unessential for a cartoon feature ( we must hold down the frames per second, folks...we must remember our budget!), but when you do see them, you suddenly find yourself drawn into the story and see that cartoon literally come to life right before your eyes.
BTW...you guys are gonna LOVE Heen the dog...that wheezy little bark is enough to have you on the floor!
