But Destino never had a wide theatrical release. It's only been played at a few rather low key things, usually some sort of special event where primarily just industry people were invited.

Well, in the Landmark Theatre chain, which was mostly responsible for the U.S. limited release of Destino, it was advertized as playing along with The Triplets of Belleville. Their original announcement page is still up, even. And, at least here in Minneapolis, the ads and newspaper listings for ToB did mention Destino. *shrug*

But as we all know, Disney is just never graceful or consistent for anything they do anymore, right? I mean, I dunno how it's a good decision to stick this short with such a fluufy film like RH. I felt pretty awkward watching the short with the chick-flick crowd whispering in confusion. As you already said, Lorenzo wasn't advertized, and it just started. A cool neon-sign version of the Disney logo, but it started abruptly nonetheless. The title actually came at the end, oddly enough. But the audience was likely too confused to enjoy it - probably wondering where the hell their movie was.

Yes, in case you haven't gathered, Lorenzo was playing at the RH showing I went to. It was at an AMC theatre, if that makes any difference. But the short itself was simply sue-poib!! I really loved it! I especially loved Malo, the tail-less black cat that curses Lorenzo's own. There's some excellent moments of art, effects, and animation that almost give you goosebumps! Man, I said it once, I'll say it again - if only creativity like this were allowed freer rein at Disney. This short was simply mah-velous.

There was no Destino when I saw The Triplets of Belleville in the theater. It sounds like it was (or wasn't?) a special localized thing there. Runaway Brain (with A Kid in King Arthur's Court) and other things such as Stand By Me (with Tom and Huck) were advertised on a national level. It was hard not to know about them. I believe they must've put Lorenzo w/ RH just to try to get animation buffs to buy a ticket for a movie they wouldn't normally watch.

Well, I did see it last night and it was pretty good. Left Shrek 2 partway through to go see it on another screen in the same theater then went back to Shrek 2.

I was just wondering if anyone else has sat through all of "Raising Helen" just to get to see the new animated short at the beginning of the film. It's called "Lorenzo" and is about a cat whose tail becomes cursed and then forces him to dance and stuff.

I loved it. The idea was great, and the 2D/3D animation mix looked perfect. It's too bad Disney's abandoned an animation style that worked as well as that seemed to. I hope it wins the Oscar next year for Best Animated Short. I don't know what it'll be up against, but I would imagine it will be considered one of the best. If you've seen it, what did you think? (without giving too much of it away for those who haven't)...

While maybe not WIDE release, "Destino" did play before <i>Calendar Girls</i>, at least in New York.

It didn't play in the suburbs right outside of the city though

I've seen Lorenzo and Destino this week ! There were two free screenings of short films this week in Paris. I went in both. Lorenzo was presented last wednesday as the winner of the annecy fest. And yesterday I was able to see Destino in a proper way (I had seen a pirate version).

Lorenzo is a beautiful film. Now here are my thoughts. Sad to say but Disney makes better shorts than they make long features nowadays. They should continue and make other shorts. Lorenzo is a dark film. And it doesn't have a happy end, even if it's funny all the way. They should make long feature films as original and different, as creative, as fresh as these two shorts. How are they going to put this on DVD? How expensive will it be ? Who will pay more than 3 dollars for a seven minute short ? Who will bother to put a disc in a dvd player for a seven minute short ?

What do you think about the short film Lorenzo by Disney Legend Joe Grant?

Also, could someone give me a site where the complete short can be found and downloaded? Thanks

I don't think a site exists where you could (legally) download the whole short, but there's a 38-second QuickTime clip that gives you the gist of it located here. I think our only hope of seeing the short on DVD anytime soon is if it wins Best Animated Short at the Oscars this year. *crosses fingers*

Though, to find the short now, I think the only possible places would be a P2P/file-sharing network, and even then, like I said, it wouldn't be legal.

I hadn't heard of this before but it looks really good. I too wish Disney would come to their senses and have so much creativity. It's too bad that Fantasia 2006 got stopped. I love the Fantasias, and who in their right mind would consider it a bad idea? What is Destino?

I have seen the 38-sec. clip on another site before, but I have never seen it in full before and I'm excited to see it sometime real soon. I hardly even get a chance to go see a movie in the theaters, you guys are pretty lucky to actually see it, especially on a big screen with the big speakers all around and all.

Thanks for the link (and merge), Paka! Is that just a montage or is it an actual excerpt from the short? No dialogue, just music kind of thing?

Destino was a short developed during the brief collaboration between Walt Disney and the great Spanish painter Salvador Dali sometime in the 40's. It would be in another package film, like Make Mine Music or Melody Time, but because of the disapproval of both films, the new film idea was abandoned and the short was unfinished.

Then, during the production of Fantasia 2000, Roy E. Disney, Walt's nephew, thought it would be a great idea to finish Destino, almost 60 years after the idea was imagined. So Roy, animators, and other employees at the studio looked for drawings, the script, and other pieces from Destino to finish it. Finally, after much time and effort, it was finally completed. Destino was released in 2003 at film festivals and won many awards and approval by people all across the globe.

Destino, with some behind the scenes material, should be released on dvd sometime next year or possibly even later this year.

I've seen Lorenzo a couple times. It's a pretty nifty little short. Has some stunning, intriguing visuals in it.

I'm really liking that black cat with the crazy Cheshire eyes.

Destino is even mentioned (not by name though) by Bette Midler in Fantasia 2000.
