Really? They are re-drawing 20% of the movie??? Wow, that makes me mad. *EXPLETIVES*

So exactly who was launching these complaints at that time? Some Arab organization? Some white people speaking 'on behalf of' Arabs they don't know? Or did Disney get pre-emptively scared and conjur up the controversy themselves?

Well, essentially, yeah. It's the editing that was done to prepare the movie for its IMAX debut, which has since been dropped due to the disappointing returns brought in by the IMAX releases of Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. Simmilar "enhancements" as they like to call them have been made to those films for their DVD debuts, and presumably it will be no worse than those were, which means the general feel of the movie will be entact. Such changes including drawing faces on background characters too small to have them in the original release, puting more detail into the backgrounds, etc. In Aladdin, the stars were a problem, and I believe all of those star backgrounds from A Whole New World got redrawn, but I'm not sure where I read that. The difference, of course, is that the new song is not being included in the movie itself as it was with Beauty and the Beast and Lion King; instead, Proud of Your Boy will exsist solely as an extra. Also, another difference is, since they never had an IMAX release for it, they can't say the enhancements were made for its IMAX run as they did in the Beauty and the Beast and Lion King booklets, so they're saying that they were made "to accomidate the sharper DVD image quality."

Think of it as if George Lucas went back into Star Wars for the first time today and changed special effects but didn't add in any new scenes, and you get the general gist of what they've done to the Fab Four for IMAX and DVD (yes, Litle Mermaid underwent simmilar edits, too, since it was slated for an IMAX release after Aladdin.)

No clue. Some Arab orginization, I would guess.

I actually don't mind the re-drawing with restoration! I think it really improves the image quality! I mean, Just look at Beauty and the Beast and Lion King! I think both were excellent restorations. Even though many complained about color for Beauty, I thought that the color change was great. Also even though several things were complained for Lion King (waterfalls, crocodiles, etc.) I still think they are superior to their vhs qualities. The only thing that I was disapointed with was the crocodiles, but even so, I think the restoration/re-drawing will look fine for Aladdin and The Little Mermaid.

Agreed. Most of the re-animation is done for a good reason, simply that detail left off originally, needed to be added for the large IMAX screen. Otherwise, we have faceless people walking around, etc.

The large changes, like the waterfall and crocs, I'm less happy with. Completely unnecessary, but at least it was minor, and doesn't really affect the film. It's not like Greedo shot first.

Though I'd love to know why they changed the crocs. It's seems so unnecessary, that there's got to be some important reason behind it.

But it's not restoration. To restore something is to return it to its original state, not to alter it. That's my biggest complaint about the whole process. Not only are Disney doing it, they're amending the usage of perfectly fine English words in order to justify it.

It doesn't matter if it's changed for the better, it matters that it was changed. I have no problem with it for Imax (obviously, it's needed, and you know going into it that you aren't seeing it in its original form), or even as a special edition, so long as the real original is also offered.

If I remember correctly, the re-drawn backgrounds for BATB and TLK were in both the Special Edition and the "Original," right?

And since Aladdin won't have the new song included, will there be 2 versions offered?
