Conan O'Brien



He's still going strong, but he got his start in the '90s. He created some of the funniest episodes as a writer and producer on The Simpsons (he did commentary for the 4th Season DVD! w00t!), and that kind of humor still shines through on his show. It's the only show I watch with religious regularity, and he never disappoints.


The Lion King Craze



Like a few others have said - the TLK phenomenon was nuts! I just barely remember seeing it in theatres (I was 10), but I fell head over heels for the dang thing. It was the first film I saw more than once at the theatre, in fact. Wasn't too media-concious at the time, though - I only remember a few newspaper ads in the movie section, and that's pretty much it. Remember - this was before the internet was widespread... LOL

Whew - okay, I'm done. Hehe... this is shaping up to be the next bandwidth-wasting thread, Luke!

Remember when wearing clothes backwards was cool? Me neither.

X-Men comics become more popular in the 90's!!!!
Even had a X-Men: The animated series on FoxKids that lasted 5 years.

FOX Kids hits the 90's with top shows like X-Men, Spiderman, Batman, Power Rangers ect...



Kids WB becomes popular in the late 90's.


I remember these toys when they came out. I even still have them in my room.


In the 90's Batman: The Animated Series and Superman: The Animated series were hits on Fox and KidsWB. Later Batman made a spinoff of Batman Beyond in the future it lasted 4 years on the KidsWB.

1. 90210 (I watched that show religiously! We even got to watch certain episodes for school for sex education! Can you believe it?!)
2. Melrose Place (I was a big fan of the 90210 spin-off)
3. Friends (what will I do on Thursday nights at 8pm after Friends is gone???!)

How about the WORST things about the 90's?

1: Steve Martin stopped being funny.
From being "A Wild and Crazy Guy" in films like "The Man with Two Brains" and "All of Me" to being a sad, desperate "star" in such films as "Sgt Bilko" and "Housesitter".

2: A Down time for Scooby Doo
The 80's had been bad for our Scooby. Not only was he forced to team-up with the much despised Scrappy, but the gang from Mystery Inc. had slowly been dropped (leaving just Daphne for a while, before she too was gone). The bulk of the 90's were the worst ever for Scooby, ending up in rerun hell, or short 8 minutes cartoons.

3: The Birth of Reality Television
You know, The Truman Show and EDtv, weren't wrong. It was bad enough with endless "makeover" reality shows in the late 90's, but then, Big Brother surfaced on Dutch TV in 1999 and worldwide the quality of primetime tv slowly went down the toilet.

4: The Dot Com boom and bust
I worked at three companies all of which went bankrupt. I ended up working at one for four months with no pay. Not a happy period.

5: Titanic
Enough said.

Anyhow, to show I'm not Mr Negative, here's some good things about the 90's

1: Doctor Who
Yes, Dr Who may have been off the air for the whole decade (apart from the fantastic TV Movie) but exciting things were happening as the fans themselves took ownership of the programme. One of the novels "Human Nature" is the best book ever written. Its not an original story, its not even written well. But it defines and examines everything that is special and wonderful about both Doctor Who (the programme) and the Doctor (the character). Everything just clicks for a read you cannot put down.



2: Scooby Doo's Rebirth (we'll ignore it led to the movies)
Well, the late 90's saw Scooby rise phoenix like from the ashes. Check out "Scooby Doo on Zombie Island" for good old Scooby fun and action, but with a modern twist and a knowing wink to the audience. The same formula is used in the new "What's New Scooby Doo?" series and a range of other Scooby DTVs



3: Capcom 2D fighters
Witness the evolution of perfection with Capcom's 2D fighters. From the continuation of the Street Fighter II series, the manga stylings of the Street Fighter Alpha/Zero titles, to the innovative and funny Nightwarriors series, the Marvel fighters (which showed much respect for the characters) to the knock down, anything goes fighting of the VS series.



4: The Brady Bunch Movies
"They're back to save America from the 90's". Nothing more needs to be said.



5: DVD
The birth of DVD of course! It's the reason we're all here! (And the reason I have no money)

Good point about the birth of DVD's! I honestly didn't even think about them. Maybe because it took me so long to get on the DVD bandwagon...

What I find quite disturbing is that some of the board members here were only BORN in the 90s (if you are in the 5-14 bracket roughly).

I find that disturbing because not only did they miss out on all the fun, it means that I - a child of the 70s - am really old.

You are so right Loomis! My 11 year old brother-in-law is here right now playing video games. It's crazy to think he wasn't born until Bill Clinton was elected President! (I was born in 1978.. I feel so old around all these youngsters on the forum!!)
