With Iger back, a third Frozen seems much more likely. I have it on good authority it was Iger who imposed Frozen 2 on the studio. Chris and Jennifer were initially resistant and wanted to work together on a new project. The sequel was fast-tracked because Iger wanted it out before he stepped down as CEO. Now that he's back, he might push for a third one to juice up the box office, distract Wall Street from Disney's financial woes and improve the stock.

He wanted it out in 2019 because his retirement bonus or whatever was depended on the box office results in 2019, that's why Disney brought all their big guns in that year: Endgame, Rise of Skywalker, Frozen II, Toy Story 4, The Lion King, Aladdin...

I'm pretty sure that Frozen III will happen, but I don't think they'll start working on it before Wish is released. I wouldn't be surprised if they still didn't know what Wish's story was other than some vague ideas.

Maybe a potential upside to this would be that the rumored Bluebeard movie gets more time to be hand-drawn animated and set to release in 2025. But we don’t know if this will happen yet since Lee and Buck are still knee-deep into Wish. Plus, with Deadpool 3 probably going to be Disney’s biggest billion dollar movie of 2024 (even with the R-rating), even more likely than Mufasa, and Tiana probably going to be the animation event of Walt Disney Animation Studios that they wanna get right, again assuming the year-long delay for the series means more time to make it hand-drawn animated, I think maybe it won’t happen for a little while longer.

Good point about Mufasa and Deadpool 3! But I think I read that one's coming in 2024 though? I didn't see Mufasa on the Wikipedia 2023 film release list either, that may simply have been an omission though. I hadn't heard about Bluebeard, but I hope you're correct about it.

Well I did say Mufasa and Deadpool 3 were coming out in 2024.

They just announced Frozen 3...

big fat sigh, lighting a vigil candle for creativity at Disney animation (as they also announced sequels to Toy Story and Zootopia)

Bob Iger confirmed that Frozen 3 is in production

Big sigh

I still hope for a magical villain for Elsa to fight against. It would be a nice mirror to the first film, where the villain was more one for Anna than Elsa, if a villain here was more centered around Elsa.

I wonder if they'll pull the plug and make Elsa gay in the third film. Probably not, but they might make her asexual which is a safer choice so they can have their cake and eat it too.

I cannot believe that Bob Iger stole Jennifer Lee's thunder and announced it. That was supposed to be her thing!

I wonder if this time they'll have the story/script down before shooting the movie .

I hope they at least build upon what they did in Frozen II and focus more on story and less on world building, and maybe it'll redeem Frozen II by the end.

I hope they do another behind-the-scenes documentary. That was actually more interesting than Frozen 2.

I just hope it takes a somewhat lighter approach. Frozen II seemed so... serious at times, and seemed to take itself so seriously at times. Then at the few times they tried to "check" themselves, its just came off as unfunny (the exception to me is when Olaf re-tells the first). I'm not a huge fan of II, if you can't tell.

I just want an upbeat, lets stop the villain, romp with these characters.

The film often felt like it was checking off a list. Like the filmmakers read all of the criticisms hurled at the first one, especially the social justice-based ones and tried to correct them. It resulted in an inorganic, calculated mess of a film that read more like a bunch of cool music videos strung together than a convincing narrative. Come to think of it, Encanto kind of felt like that too.

Agreed. Maybe they have been going for something more "meme-able", which is gross. I still get mad about the whole "Lost in the Woods" song in general. Like you said, checking off a list. Give Jonathan Groff a song... Check! Does the song make sense, or serve the story? Not really, but he needed more of a song in the first, so we're giving him one now. How disappointing.
