According to this article, Steamboat Silly is the final installment of The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse series: https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/ste ... 34884.html

I haven’t really watched most of this series, not because I think they’re bad but because I find it really challenging to binge multiple episodes of gag heavy comedy like this.

However, I saw a really interesting comment online that speculated this short is meant to be a commentary on Steamboat Willie’s impending introduction to the public domain. Because of course, Disney will still own most versions of Mickey including the Paul Rudish Mickey, but theoretically in a couple years there could be hundreds of non-Disney licensed Steamboat Willie Mickeys out there… thoughts?

I say good on Rudish for addressing it- I'm sure it'll be in a funny way. I have been interested in the copyright stuff for a bit now, even though I don't fully understand all of it. We've seen what Pooh in the public domain is doing, so our beloved Mickey will surely be in some unsavory things. It is what it is at this point, nothing to be done... Like we have to accept murderous Pooh, we'll have to accept, unfortunately, sleezy or gross Mickey I guess. I mean, there have already been parodies of Mickey, of course, everything from JonnyEthco shorts on YouTube to South Park...

My read on the Rudish shorts has always been that Disney found a way to copyright a classic-ish version of Mickey and friends, so that when all the real designs go into the public domain, Disney still has these similar but distinct characters to market. So it is very fitting that this version of the character is closing out with Steamboat Silly!

I feel like you, I’m interested in the copyright stuff although I don’t fully understand it. I think it will take some adjusting to see legal knock offs of Mickey Mouse, and people will do cringe stuff like they have to Milne’s Pooh, but I also think the public domain is a good thing and I think it’s a net positive that Mickey and soon other Disney properties will enter the public domain.
