I don't think we've ever seen this image of Elio with his mother:

I think the movie looks really cute so far. I'm glad Disney is not giving up on sci-fi movies.

I think it would be smart of WDAS and Pixar to avoid sci-fi in the future, personally. Even though I like Treasure Planet, Atlantis, and Strange World (Lightyear is sorta meh though), it's just not a successful genre for them--perhaps not for animation in general? I remember Titan A.E. flopped back in the day, too. I suppose The Iron Giant is sort of sci-fi and was successful.
But success aside, I agree that this looks cute so far.

Personally I’m not a fan of the sci-fi genre either animation or live action. The ONLY sci-fi thing I like is the original Lost in Space (1965-1968). I love that show!
Treasure Planet, Atlantis and Robinsons were ok but not favorites.

I feel like this film will be similar in tone to "Lilo & Stitch," also a sci-fi animated movie and one of Disney's only successes in the 2000s, so there is a precedent for the genre doing well. I think the thing most working against this movie is the fact that it's a non-franchise film. Audiences really aren't being kind to those, in and out of Disney/Pixar.

Even
The Iron Giant flopped when it was released (great reviews, poor marketing). Animated sci-fi just can't win. I love
Lightyear (and all the Disney animated sci-fi (A:TLE, TP, SW), but I think because it wasn't the Buzz everyone knew and wasn't a Toy Story film worked against it. I'm hoping because
Elio is original will help it do well.

Oh, okay, so The Iron Giant is more of a cult favorite like Treasure Planet then. Good point about Lilo & Stitch though, PatchofBlue, but I would argue that one only succeeded because of the irreverent marketing riffing off classic Disney (basically channeling Shrek to a degree, which was popular at the time while Disney was in a passe phase). I forgot about Meet the Robinsons, too, I can't remember how well that one did.

An easter egg for Elio is featured in the official trailer of Elemental:

Interesting that the Easter egg for Pixar's next movie is already featured in the trailer of Elemental. I guess that's the place described as an "intergalactic United Nations of aliens" where most of the movie will likely take place.

I’m so excited for
Elio! It’ll be nice to get something original again. And come on, it just looks so cute! Plus, those pictures that
Farerb posted–I just love how Pixar is so detailed. I mean, the fact that they took the time to render Elio in different poses in a simple environment is just… I can’t explain it, but you get me, right?

I wonder if those little dangly jellyfish things at the bottom of the planet will have any significance. By the way,
D82, thanks for being so nice to us newbies (
MaQu,
PatchofBlue,
Lele)! Can’t speak for them, but I seriously appreciate it!

PIXAR has been putting out a lot of original films lately, I thought? Soul, Turning Red, Luca. I am looking forward to Elio, I like the design for this one, although I'm skeptical of its success after so many other sci-fi animated films have flopped lately.

Yes, of course. I’m glad they’re keeping it up. It’s just that I feel there was quite a lag for original stories from 2010-2019. Unlike their (7) movies from 2000-2009, which became instant classics, none of the (4 original) ones from 2010-2019 have really caught on. And not really the ones from 2020-now (… blame it on the pandemic); for example, I’ve never met a hyper-obsessed Soul fan (and I’m kind of hoping I never do… no offense, hyper-obsessed Soul fans). So, I’m hoping Elio will be bigger (as an original film, of course) than what we’ve been seeing lately. But then again, who knows…

I believe that Toy Story 3 is considered by many a classic and the definitive ending to the Toy Story trilogy.

True, yes. It's not like I said it wasn’t.

Oh yes, I thought you meant all movies from 2010-2019, just now noticed you only meant original movies.

I think there are a couple of reasons to account for these films not really taking off the way many of them ought to. The pandemic crippling the theatrical experience, for one, and also the fact that there is just greater competition in the animated film world.
I also think that millenial nostalgia has something to do with it. Finding Nemo and Toy Story get a leg up in the modern discourse because the seven-year-olds who saw it back in 2003 have been online for the last several years to keep them in the conversation. The audience that is most likely to celebrate a film like Turning Red or Luca as their favorite Pixar film aren't really old enough to post about it online yet.
I've personally found a lot of their recent films really good (I know
noooooone of you guys could have anticipated this but ... I REALLY liked ONWARD) and hope that they get to be seen as proper classics before too long.
Though I would say COCO and Inside Out from that 2010-19 era actually have been widely embraced by the Pixar fandom and even the general audience, but COCO was seen as a huge win for Latin-American representation, and Inside Out was really celebrated for the way it made mental health accessible to children, so there was kind of a prize for liking those movies. (I don't consider that a bad thing, per se, I enjoyed those films too, I just wish that audiences would share the love.)

That's true. I do like Luca and Turning Red because of how different they feel from PIXAR of the past that I wasn't fond of, so it would take a new generation of people to appreciate them considering the generation that grew up with old PIXAR would dislike them for being different from the older films, I suppose.

Yeah, I was thinking about that too. Back then (2000-2009… more or less) it was just Pixar (and, ugh, DreamWorks), now we’ve got a ton of animated films coming out every year from all over the place.

Woah, did
not see that coming. I always thought your avatar was just a generic blob.
Another thing I would say, is that I’m interested in hearing new voices, director-wise. For example, those two films you mentioned, Inside Out and Coco were both directed by people who had worked on the original Toy Story: Pete Docter and Lee Unkrich, respectively. Now that Pete Docter is at the top and new directors are coming out with new films (like Domi Shi and Adrian Molina) I’m very interested in seeing where this new era will go.
But welcome to the forums
PatchofBlue! Glad to have another rookie along for the ride!

I hope Shi will continue to rise. She and Docter are the only two names I have much attachment to who are still at that studio, and even with Docter, I thought Soul was just so-so. It hew closer to the buddy roadtrip formula like Elemental looks to do, whereas Luca and Shi's film were more original--the latter more than the former.
