OK, in Oliver's defence, while the animation of background characters in certain shots is definitely subpar I do not recall anything particularly wrong with the character animation. I actually think the animation is quite a bit stronger than in Great Mouse Detective.JeanGreyForever wrote:I didn't have a problem with Oliver being blatantly 80s. You're right about the character animation. The principal characters are pretty well-done but the background characters are truly awful. I was in shock looking at some of these images especially during the opening song. If I saw these images without any context, I would never guess they belonged to a Disney animated film and even most of the the Disney cheapquels had better quality and that's saying something. The drawings look straight from Saturday morning cartoons.Jules wrote:OK, in Oliver's defence, while the animation of background characters in certain shots is definitely subpar I do not recall anything particularly wrong with the character animation. The film certainly looks gritty, though. I think the character outlines are all black, unlike the film's immediate predecessors which used coloured Xerox outlines. It gives the film a dirty, urban look and feel which I am pretty sure is intentional.
Is it the look and art direction of the film that bothers you Jean? Or do you dislike the way the characters move and the quality of the drawings?
