I think that DreamWorks (and Pixar) were seen as being "cool," and Disney had kind of become not as cool as they once were, in the eyes of the public, anyway.

Chicken Little was for me the moment that Disney gave up. It seemed everything so lazily done, and considering it came out during the wave of sequels/after the whole "2D is dead" fiasco, the movie is really hard to stomach.

I don't think TP&TF is being 'blamed' for the death of 2D animation. Wasn't it decided long before TP&TF that Disney would quit 2D? Wasn't the death of traditional animation brought upon by horrible, embarrassing, intolerable movies like Home On the Range? I haven't seen MTR or CL, so I can't comment on them, but Bolt was a huge disappointment and one of the weakest Disney-films I've ever seen. However, my opinion has nothing to do with the medium which was used to create the films. Anyway, I think that Disney had already been very unwise to dismiss the idea of an entirely CGI-animated film when Lasseter proposed it to the executives in the 1980's. They let Pixar pioneer in that field, where it should have been Disney. Historically, Disney was all about innovation but now, they let themselves get surpassed by others. If Walt had been alive, I have no doubt he would have embraced CGI every early on and wouldn't be making 2D films anymore.

Also, the mental image I have of a witch burning at Disneyland is way too funny; with the screaming Chicken Little at the pyre and a pyromaniac Mickey Mouse terrorizing weeping kids...
