I care, because beyond the merchandise, the princess line can help or hurt Disney overall.

Also, keeping a brand name strong requires rules and care. There is a reason why the princesses never look at each other, or interact with each other on any merchandise.... there are rules to keeping the brand strong. By shoe-horning characters into the brand, all they do is dilute it.

One of the many concerns is the line growing too fast.... with Merida, that will have added 3 princesses in 4 years, which is A LOT. Eventually, the line will just look like "a bunch of random women", who most people wont be able to identify. And the reason a Disney Princess doll sells better than a random doll is because we know who the character is, and their story.

As for the validity of a non WDAS character joining the line.... well, in the 90s, many people thought Anastasia and THumbelina were made by Disney. So if DIsney buys the animation branch of Fox, should they make those ttwo part of the line up too?

The main point being, Disney is the one who defines the public's perception, not the other way around. Doesnt matter if people at times confuse PIxar films with Disney ones... Disney should strive to keep its identity strong and not just be "a bunch of characters"

Also, the Princess line is crazy successful as it is. It doesnt need to be pushed. Actually, if they keep pushing it, they will alienate boys, and turn Disney into a girl's brand altogether. Princesses sell themselves, they dont need to be shoved down people's throats.\

Giselle was going to, but Disney realized that they'll have to give Amy Adams royalties, so this was dropped :(

I doubt that they're going to be added up because they're kids. Plus Vanellope becomes the PRESIDENT, instead of the princess

I think Princess Eilonwy and Princess Kida should join the Disney princess line too. If Merida can join the princess line then these two can too. If I was the boss of Disney, I would let Eilonwy and Kida join. Even if their movies aren´t popular so are these two very strong role models for girls. Especially Eilonwy, I think many girls would want to have magic just like her.

Yeah, and it seems random to put 2 old/pretty old princesses out of nowhere

This is not true. Pocahontas and Mulan have been in and out of the princess line for years.

This is how I feel as well. She is Disney now, there is no difference between her and Snow White, Ariel, et al. They could even throw in Giselle so she doesn't feel excluded because she's live-action.
Princess Leia won't ever be in it because Star Wars and as well as Marvel is kept as a separate entity and franchise division. They know it's suicidal if they attempt anywhere near putting Leia or any princess characters in Marvel in the Disney Princess franchise. You're underestimating how fucking huge and powerful of fandom those two have.

As for Giselle, see below

Disney will never be able buy out Nintendo. Nintendo is a Japanese company. So keep dreaming.

Won't happen regardless. Have to pay royalty to Amy Adams if they want to use her likeness.

Snow White, Cinderella and Aurora have been in the line from the beginning. It wouldn't work to add any older characters like Kida, Eilonwy, Megara ect because their films have been out for years now and the majority of the public doesn't know who they are. Plus Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty are all viewed as classics that everyone has seen. Atlantis and The Black Cauldron are not. Tiana, Rapunzel and Merida all work because their films are more recent and the public knows them. And honestly Tiana and Rapunzel's films were created simply to add more characters to the princess line.

As for Pocahontas and Mulan they have been in the line from the beginning as well but they have just started getting featured more now that Tiana and Rapunzel have showed up and people have been pushing for them to be included more.

It's all a popularity contest based on the marketability of the characters and the identity they have with Disney. It's not surprising that Merida is the newest member; I'm actually interested in seeing more of how they handle her design with the rest of the ladies. :p

I am interested in this, mainly because I want to see HOW they integrate her into the group. Merida is designed to be an anti-princess: in fact, in the movie Elinor says the word "princess" like that's all she really is, and it makes Merida really sad. So be in the Disney PRINCESS group that's going to be odd and fascinating to watch.

Hopefully Disney Consumer Products understands that the main reason people like Merida so much is because she is above a princess a fascinating character that appeals to girls for the main reason that she is active, free and fun. Putting in the group that likes tea parties, dresses and such does take that away bit.

And yeah I realize that I am debating over a marketing and for some it is a wasted effort, but considering how they have been marketing Cinderella as of late, I want to see what they do with Merida.

I said all that as a joke (I was one of those people who was glad Giselle was ignored). It fell flat, I guess. :P

I do understand what you're saying. I just don't think there is a difference between corporate bs and good business (the Disney sequels and Cars 2 were also good business). Your statement was an oxymoron to me.

Maybe they're so unpopular because disney don't make merchandising of them. In spain the disney store shops didn't bring merchandise of Pocahontas and Mulan because they thought that they are unpopular between the girls, but when they brought merchandising it was a hit and the dolls were sold fast .

Well they're unpopular because nobody saw either one of those movies. They weren't really successful and Disney tends to add princesses to their lineup based on how successful it is. Of course, since Brave is a Pixar movie, it's kind of a given that people were going to see it. Although...I find it kind of interesting since Sleeping Beauty didn't do all that well in theaters on first release and yet Aurora is in the franchise. But then the movie did become popular over time so I guess it kind of makes sense.

It would have been almost an insult to Walt's memory if Aurora hadn't been included. Snow White, Cinderella and Aurora are the three main "Walt-era" princesses.

That's funny, I find Cinderella's latest updated clipart design a much bigger insult to Walt's legacy. But that's probably just me. :)
