Ok, speaking of subtle, I just saw the "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" video by The Darkness.

If you "get it", it is one of the best videos you'll ever see.

Yes Thriller is the greatest Music video of all time. Now to explain my choices that are mentioned above.

Ironic: This video was very inventive in that Alanis plays 4 different roles all with a different personality. Very Clever!

Cry Me a River: This song could have been interpreted many different ways, but the way they choose was very fitting. When you first start watching this video you are so confused as to what is going on. I mean JT is creepy how he moves about the house after he breaks in. By the end you understand what is up. Great story Very cool and inovative. This video takes you on a journey, When it is over you just have to watch it again.

I just got back from a Michel Gondry retrospective and I thought of this thread.

Gondry has directed feature films such as Human Nature and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but he got his start in some ground-breaking music videos and commercials.

The program included:

Around the World - Daft Punk
Come into My World - Kylie (one for MMB!)
Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground - The White Stripes
Everlong - Foo Fighters (great video)
Fell in Love with a Girl - The White Stripes
The Hardest Button to Button - The White Stripes
Bachelorette - Bjork
Human Behaviour - Bjork
Knives Out - Radiohead
Let Forever Be - Chemical Brothers
Sugar Water - Cibo Matto
Like a Rolling Stone - The Rolling Stones

...as well as some commericals and short films. REALLY great. They were largely lifted from some recent DVDs that showcased Gondry, Spike Jonze and Chris Cunningham respectively. They are really cool. I've just ordered them from Amazon, who have them all available as a 3-pack for only $35 US.

2099net - you'll be pleased to know the Spike Jonze DVD has an audio commentary from Christopher Walken on 'Weapon of Choice'.

My favorite Music Videos I dont really watch many but I have a few..

NSYNC Bye Bye Bye ( love the puppets)

TLC Waterfalls (Thats just so cool them dancing in the water)

Mandy Moore (I love the colors and how she falls and appears in anothe secene * Colors are very appealing to me* I dont like many dull things.*)

Avril Lavigne Complicated (Its just a a good song and shows teenagers just being teeanagers hanging around nothing to special just normal)

Shakira Wherever whenever (*my colombian sista* I have grown up with her music she is awsome and her video ideas are so orignal and out there I like that sort of thing to)

Metallica ~ One.... Crazy idea for a video, and very haunting!

Tool ~ Sober ..... ooooh its so creepy!

Missy Elliot ~ The Rain..( I think thats the title) They all started to look like this after a while but this was kewl when I first saw it.

INXS ~ Need you tonite. I remember thinking this was the most brilliant thing I ever saw, That whole card thing at the end especially. I also dug the album

R.E.M. Everybody Hurts ~ Im not their biggest fan for sure, but I loved this idea!
so universal ( obviously!) The song was ok too. I know everyone liked that Losing my Religion one a lot too. but this one didnt try so hard to me.

Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees ~ Ok Im biased here because I love the band, but I had to pick something...

Billy Idol, Rock the Cradle of Love ~ Ok, I remember coming home after school and watching this on the afternoon countdown and thinking it was so dirty, and worried I might get caught watching it. Great for school age guys like I was at the time. Not a big fan of Idols, but I happened to like this song too...

I'd pick Savage Garden's "Crash and Burn".

I liked how in the beginning Darren Hayes (the singer) doesn't move, but as the video goes on he gets more animated...it was also pretty cool to see part of the music video "sung" in sign language.

Don't know if this has been done before, but you can go ahead and merge it if you have to.

Excellent video. I've had it on DVD since the record came out.

I love the way that Cash/Romanek took a Nine Inch Nails song that was partly about self-inflicted pain to remind yourself you still feel (reported inspiration for Fight Club!) and turned it into a sad reflection on a man's life.

One of the best videos ever.

Romanek is a genius.

I've just seen Will Young's "Who am I?" video, where they use effects to make him appear as a Blue Peter presenter in various clips from the 80's. It was a very emotional moment, bringing back lots of childhood memories. I'm actually surprised the BBC have let him do this, they're very protective of the Blue Peter image.

I can't believe none of you listed the QUEEN of music videos, Madonna. It proves you all suck!

Some of my favorites:

Madonna: Material Girl-One of Madonna's earlier videos, with Madonna dressed in pink, wearing diamonds, and imitating Marilyn Monroe.

Aha: Take On Me-I love this song, and the video is just as awesome. A great 80's video, and a classic.

Michael Jackson: Billie Jean-I absolutely loved this song as a kid, and I remember the video, with Michael Jackson dancing on the sidewalk, as squares lit up.

Madonna: Like A Prayer-This is one of my favorite Madonna songs, and I remember when the video came out, it was a big controversy. Pepsi even cancelled the television spot she filmed for them, due to this video. One of several controversial videos Madonna would release.

Madonna: Justify My Love-Madonna followed up one controversial video (Like A Prayer), with another. This time, the controversy had nothing to do with religion, and everything to do with sex. MTV banned Justify My Love, so Madonna, and her record company, decided to release the first video single. It was a success, and remains, to this day, the top selling video single of all time!

Madonna: Vogue-An awesome song, and a classic video. Madonna knows how to push buttons, and she pushed all the right buttons with this video.

Paula Abdul: Opposites Attract-Sure, Paula Abdul didn't have the greatest voice, but, she certainly knew how to work with the right people. I remember seeing Paula, and that animated cat, dancing all over MTV.

Nine Inch Nails: Closer-Nine Inch Nails created an amazing album, and the song Closer, and the video, are a classic. Directed by Mark Romanek, a man with grand vision!

Madonna: Erotica-Madonna takes on sex, again, and this time she creates a video that explores the different types of sexuality. S&M, bondage, homosexuality, voyeurism, etc. Although there is no nudity in this video, the themes were such, that MTV relegated the video to play only after midnight, before finally banning the video.

Janet Jackson: That's The Way Love Goes-I was a senior in highschool when Janet Jackson released what I consider to be her best album, simply titled Janet. The lead single/video, That's The Way Love Goes, shows Miss Jackson growing into a beautiful, sexual, confident woman. A classic Janet Jackson video.

It's funny - since you've bumped this, the band have kind of plowed off the rails with the second album. The 'joke' is over, and I think they are taking themselves a little too seriously now.
