Those are awesome, Poody!

Do you buy these costumes like that? Or do people make 'em from scratch with pieces of cloth or store-bought 'normal' clothes?
Cuz I would be so into this. I would love to dress as a Disney character and be that character...ah dreams.
I think most serious cosplayers make their costumes because the ones sold usually suck, but I think the real idea is just to have a great costume, and it's okay if you have someone else make it for you or if it is part or even all bought ready made. I think all that matters is that you are in a costume, but the goal generally, as I get the impression just from observation, is to look as much like the character as possible (and have fun, of course). Of course, I'm not a cosplayer really... yet. Ha. If I ever date a girl into it, I could get into it though. I do always dress up on Halloween.
Anyways, I am also curious about something. I wonder what cosplayers do with their costumes. I mean, the general uses. It seems of course that they like to do Photoshoots and they wear them to conventions. Anything else? Not that those aren't good enough reasons. What do you do at the conventions in your costumes? Take photos with people who approach you and enter costume contests? These are my assumptions, but I've never gotten the full explanation from an actual cosplayer, so I'd love to hear it.
As for me, like I said, I do get really into Halloween costumes. I have done one Disney costume (well, I wore some as a kid, but I don't have those photos and probably wouldn't post them anyway, ha). I have posted it here before. I was the Genie from Aladdin, and a few years later, I went as the Vacation version of the Genie. Here are the pictures:
Entered some contests with it but never won one. Once, I lost to a guy dressed as the crow. That really pissed me off, because that was just black and white makeup and a black shirt and pants... Ah, well, that has been the story of my life, ha.
One of my problems with making costumes, even though I've made some good ones, is that I can't sew clothing. The times I've tried have been disastrous. For one thing, even when I was in decent shape, my proportions are just weird (I mean, even when I was skinny, er, normal anyway, I had huge upper legs and buttocks). Add to that a lack of knowledge of how clothing is constructed... I could probably do it okay with a pattern, but my proportions would still make it difficult. In the future, I hope I can afford to hire a seamstress, if not ever for cosplay, then at least for Halloween costumes, or I will have to stick with doing characters for whom the clothing can be bought off the rack.
