My experience at work today reminded me of some more:
broken air conditioners
catty women

Not neccesarily. Movies can be anything. Movies can explore the human psyche; can examine human relationships; can provide meaning; provoke introspection etc. But why are those kind of movies only seen by a handful of people, while mindless remakes and sequels of already useless action vehicles get seen by millions? True, movies are entertainment and there is nothing wrong with escapism, but why does escapism have to be so DUMB most of the time? I'm also talking about the countless 'funny' gross-out comedies like that of the Seth Rogen/Judd Apatow-type. Why do we feel the need to DUMB OURSELVES DOWN? Why do we accept it?ajmrowland wrote:and Goliath: movies are entertainment. let's not distort what entertainment is. just simply meant to be fun. escapism.
either way, its long past time you stopped stressing out over everything.

to put it simply, people enjoy familiarity and they dont want to think. admittedly even the dont like dumb movies, which makes it even more boggling.Goliath wrote:Not neccesarily. And I'm sorry if it annoys you, but I think about things a lot and I ask myself questions. I think everybody, at some point, has asked himself: "what is everything all about?" As a famous Dutch stand-up comedian once said: people can do that. People can look at themselves and think their situations and decisions through. A cow can't do that. After four years of grazing in a meadow, a cow doesn't think, "what the hell am I accomplishing with this?" But people can do that. But they don't. Instead, they watch some stupid gameshow or other useless shit.
Right now, our neighbors are having a party. Music blasting through the speakers. You know, the kind of 'party music' that seems to be obligatory when you throw one. The "boom boom, hoom-pa-pa" kind of music. I watch over the fence and I see them drinking a lot and doing silly dances and hear them laugh out loud and try to out-yell each other. And it's like Bob Dylan wrote in his 1997 song 'Standing in the doorway': "All the laughter is just making me sad". Because what worth is there in drinking yourself silly and doing stupid dances to entertain one another? What is it hiding; what's behind the disguise? Why don't people go sit together and get to know one another? Talk to each other. Be real about things. Why do we have the need to avoid that, and instead fill up our time with stupid bullshit?
To end on a lighter note, two of my pet peeves illustrated:

#1. People who complain about fat people.
Sotiris wrote:Yes, Wonderlicious. You say that you dislike hatred, injustice, prejudice etc and then say that you also dislike fat people. Can't see the irony there? Not to mention your dislike for "people who can't cook" which I find utterly ridiculous.
Lazario wrote:I didn't even think of that, but good point.
I was just thinking of how utterly pointless it is. I've heard every excuse to try justifying it but, usually, people who complain about fat people are superificial to the point of being angry just because they have to look at another person or have an attitude of superiority when, really, the difference between the fat person and the skinny person is metabolism. Sorry we're not all so lucky to be born the same. Skinny like you. But way too many skinny people are only happy to sit on their ass judging that person when they don't have to work to stay at a thin person's weight. But the fat person has to work to be skinny. And if they don't have the time (seeing how cutthroat the world we live in still is, many people don't) or have to deal with potentially severe trauma (a lot of people with weight problems, INCLUDING thin people with anorexia or bulemia, have significant psychological issues that can't be undone with a snap of someone's finger) then they're deserving of scorn or disapproval? And, if you were actually so concerned with their health, would you be insutling them in the first place? Not by calling them fat (they know that already) but by voicing how annoying you think they are.
Hence why it's pointless. Nothing's going to be changed by being so selfish you have to go "I'm thin and you're not." Because that's exactly what you're saying.
