buffalobill wrote:Why not put the bonus features for each of the LOTR movies on a single blu ray disc (even though still in standard def)? Blu ray discs could hold it & they could've had 1 blu ray instead of 3 dvds of bonus features for each movie + the blu ray discs are more scratch resistant. You save a lot of space having a 9 disc instead of 15 disc set. Correct me if I'm wrong but couldn't they have done that? I understand splitting the movies because of the space for the commentaries (though I'm not big on commentaries & would've rather had the movies on 1 disc but people would've bitched if they dropped the commentaries).
They reused DVDs from previous releases as far as I know. I know that's what they did with the Theatrical Blu-ray release that I picked up last year. I guess its to save money by not having to make another disc.
As far as Jurassic Park, I'm looking forward to the release. I usually like to have the sequels as well, but like many, I wish these were available separately. I really only want the 1st movie.

I am totally satisfied with how my "Lord of the Rings Extended Editions" look on unconversion on my Blu-ray player. They jump off the screen they are so bright and clear, and I have seen a Blu-ray version of "Two Towers", and was not impressed any more than I am with the upconversion.
That being said, I will save my money, and be able to get the "Star Wars" and "Jurassic Park" releases when they come out, without denting the budget too badly.
There are some movies that just look great on the upconversion, especially movies that have been digitally re-mastered for their DVD release like the early James Bond movies. "Dr. No", "From Russia With Love", "Goldfinger" and "Thunderball" are amazing on a Blu-ray player being upconverted. Impress me enough to not spend any more money than I have to.

I wish I had the DVD versions of the EEs. From what I've seen of the Blu-ray the green tint on Fellowship is too noticable. The DVDs look better as far as picture color in my opinion, although the Blu-ray has more detail in the picture. I'm hoping for a better release once the Hobbit movies are out.
But I agree with you on upconversion dvdjunkie. Upconversion looks really good on certain titles.

those dvds were very soft-looking, and any green tint fellowship's blu is barely more than the dvd.
TT and ROTK are much more defined than the dvds, and the sound is awesome. granted, in TT, the biggest difference didn't show until osgiliath. It's definitely present in ROTK

As I said, To Each His Own, on whether you prefer the Blu-ray over the standard DVD on this Extended Edition Triloogy.
If they had put each movie on one single disc and gone ahead and put all the extras on Blu-ray also, then I might have bought into it. For now I am totally satisfied with what I have.
As far as the sound goes, like I said before I had a comparison with the "Two Towers" on Blu-ray, and my sound was just a dynamic. I think it all depends on how big a system you have for surround sound, and if you have it balanced to the room and where you sit to watch the film. I couldn't find enough difference in the sound quality to make want to spend another $100 on the Blu-ray version of the Extended Editions.

Is this Trilogy set a legitamate upgrade? I need Jurassic Park and I was wondering if I should buy the 2001 Trilogy since I know where I can get it cheap or should I save for this set?
Does anyone have screencap comparisons?
Oh and how good is this JP trilogy bonus features wise?
Thank you in advance for your replies

The Blu-ray release of "Jurassic Park" and its sequels is very good. They have gone back to the original masters to get the Hii-Def print they used on the Blu-ray releases and what really sells the set is the sound. Wow!!! When you are watching the ripples in the glass in "JP", if your sound system has a decent sub-woofer, it shakes the whole room.
I was hesitant to buy this trilogy, but when it was only $39 on Blu-ray for Christmas at Best Buy, I couldn't pass it up.
The extras, which there are plenty of, have also been remastered, some are only in 720p, and there are some new ones that are in full Hi-Def. The Extras are spread out over each film, so you don't have a separate disc for all the extras.
I say buy it, if you can find a decent price. I saw the set at one of our used DVD stores here in Wichita for $29.99.

The Blu-ray is worth it. I picked it up during Black Friday for $30 on Amazon. I know some have complained with the grain in the picture, but its the best the movies have looked. I've also heard wonderful things about the audio, but I don't have a surround setup right now to test it out.
