My actual favorite changes from day to day, but my official go-to "favorite movie" is The Color Purple. I don't think I can sum up the reasons why in anything shorter than an essay, but I will just say that I think it deals with family, spirituality, and struggle in a very beautiful and inspiring and honest way, all the while displaying truly great filmmaking (thank you, Spielberg). The dialogue is just perfect, the acting is -- across the board -- some of the greatest I've ever encountered, the music is memorable and unique and important to the story, its use of symbolism is really ingenious, and... okay, I'm going to stop typing now.

<i>Moulin Rouge!</i> has been my go to fave film for years. But I just re-watched <i>Breakfast at Tiffany's</i> recently and think that may surpass it as my all-time favorite. Honorable mention goes to <i>Gone with the Wind</i>.

I haven't seen that movie in at least 10 years and I'm prepared to say I still like it. (Can anyone believe at any point in the 80's- he would have been seen as "so funky"?)

@ Disney Guru: My main objection to Guess Who's Coming to Dinner is that it sends the message that a black man will be only accepted when he behaves 'white'. I know the film is praised for dealing with this controversial issues of a white woman and a black man, but Sidney Potier's character is entirely 'white' in his behavior. That's why Spencer Tracey's character ultimately accepts him.

Agreed. I always have trouble picking my favorite film, because I don't know whether to pick the one I've watched the most (which one obviously does for a reason; in other words: really liking it); or the one that I have the most emotional attachment to (like the ones I mentioned on the previous page); or the one that I consider to be the best from a cinematographic point of view. If it were about that last criterium, I would pick The Godfather too, though I hate how clichéd that choice has become. It's one of my favorites, too, and I think I've watched it at least five times.

Films I've watched the most (besides the Back to the Future-trilogy and Disney Classics):

- Die Hard-trilogy (1988-1995)
- Groundhog Day (1993; though I like the part where he's still a cynic the most ---big surprise!)
- The Breakfast Club (1985)
- Falling Down (1993)

If this is his definition of hot I'd prefer to be not.

As dvdjunkie said, it's hard to pick a favorite when there are so many I will rewatch when the mood strikes.

No order, and there may be some favorites I haven't actually rated.
Also, I left off some, as they may be films that I consider "great", but not "favorites". A few of the 9s and 10s are great films that are probably destined to become favorites, but for whatever reason I've only seen them once so far (like Hot Fuzz.) Also, there may be some in the 6s, 7s, 8s and 9s that aren't necessarily "great" films, but are still films I love to rewatch. Plus, my ratings are purely subjective and I may have rated one film in comparison to another, that doesn't necessarily mean I would consider it great or not great kist because of it's position on the IMDB list. A rating may change from one viewing to the next, although I may not bother to change the vote at IMDB.

Most anything above a 5-6 I consider rewatchable, and most things 4 and below range from "probably never see again" to "complete dreck that wasted 2 hours of my life." There are also a few 1s tossed in on films I haven't seen that I feel truly deserve that rating based just on the trailer, or other considerations.

I left off Disney, but I think there are a few Pixar films mixed in there, sorry!

@Goliath you know I have never thought of it that way but you make a very good point.
