Yes, he's recognized by the fan community, but he gets really neglected by the Disney Corporation (like the film as a whole).
Speaking of Frollo (sorry to get off topic)

I imagine everyone has seen the cover of the next Kingdom Keepers book. I finished book 2 last week and now I'm halfway through the third...

Also I think Gothel will have a following....to me her name is forgettable and her song....the title doesn't sound like a villain's song. Now the song itself is for sure a villainess song...Faciler though in PATF I like better...

Disney's Divinity wrote:To be completely honest, no. She kind of reminds me of Medusa that way, in that you enjoy her, but she never really goes the distance (like nearly all the fairy tale villains, Cruella, Frollo, etc.). As far as the Disney merchandise, Frollo and Tremaine have never been advertised as much as the others (as Goliath mentioned). Worse, her design is really boring, tbh. I still like her though.
What do you mean she(and Medusa) never "go the distance?" Just curious lol.

sunhuntin I know it's so dumb lol I mean they keep Jafar and Scar off the claendar for those two  Like for real but they have added the Cheshire Cat on the past calendars as well. They have soo many awesome underused villains they could advertise but they use characters like Bruce and the Cheshire Cat along side characters lik Maleficent and Dr. Facilier. Atleast characters like Mim and The Queen of Hearts are wicked and/or crazy enough to be associated with those villains.

the cheshire cat isnt a villain either. sheesh, whoever plans those calendars needs to be re-educated!!

i would pick

scar/hyenas/zira [yes, crossing films, but zira doesnt deserve her own page]
govenor radcliffe/wiggins
ursula/flotsam/jetsam
captain hook/smee
frollo
cruella/horace/jasper
gaston/le fu
hades/pain/panic
gantu/625/hamsterviel
prince john/sir hiss/sheriff/vultures
lady tremaine/stepsisters/lucifer

Tristy wrote:Well, Lady Tremaine, Maleficent, and Shere Kahn are (somewhat) subtle villains and look at the success that they've had.

I mean yeah Maleficent was over the top at times but she can be very quiet that when she breaks loose it's quite frightening.
Yep and the Evil Queen in her regular form was very subtle and quiet so I am hoping Mother Gothel breaks into the mold =D
OK, let's break down each character...

Evil Queen: True, at the beginning she was very subtle and graceful. But then... she demands the huntsman to kill Snow White and bring back her heart as proof that the deed is done. When that fails, she goes into her dungeon, prepares a mix that turns her into an old hag. This scene scared A LOT of children throughout the decades. Plus, much like Snow White, she was the first of her kind, so of course the Queen will be celebrated.

Lady Tremaine: This fits the "subtle" bit well enough as she doesn't have any magical powers, her powers lies in the fact that she has total and complete control over the life of one person. However, actions speak louder than words. She planned for Cinderella to not go to the ball by giving her lots of chores. When Cindy got her dress, she indirectly orders her daughters to destroy it (and it that surprised her). Then, the biggest one, she locked Cindy in her own room just as the Duke was going to try the shoe on everyone. None of these actions are magical, but they are VERY well written and memorable, and she WAS the highlight of the film, unlike Gothel.

Maleficent: Yeah she had grace and subtlety, but really, she was a show woman, with lots of pyrotechnics, lightning, evil henchmen, and ALL THE POWERS OF HELL BY HER SIDE. This is ripe for exploitation.

Sheer Khan: He is a great villain, but rarely do you see him mentioned or used in Villain merchandise. He was very scary and intimidating, but he didn't have enough to make him exploitable.

This leads us to Gothel. She doesn't have any magical powers, all her plans involve emotional manipulation and didn't have a bigger than life scheme to destroy everyone. All she wanted was the magic hair so she could be beautiful. That's it. Again, she is a great villain in how she effectively manipulated Rapunzel and subtlety humiliated her day in and day out. But again, that isn't enough for Disney to say "Hey! Let's have HER on the villain show!".

Facilier did because he was an amazing character in terms of raw potential. Gothel, not so much.

Just personal, but I didn't think they were as effective as Disney's best villains.

Also, what definition of subtle are we using?

I think Medusa is effective she called Penny a "homely little girl" and made her cry. Perhaps the cruelest act of any disney villain. Medusa biggest issues are people call her a Cruella knock off and she came at a bad time because Disney movies in those days arent really remembered by the company now a days. And Gothel stabbed Flynn, the hero! thats more than Maleficent or the Evil Queen can say.

And I guess this defintion "Delicately complex and understated" sounds about right.

I would go so far as to say she already hasn't become popular. The film, like most of their CGI work, despite quick box office success, is being forgotten. Incredibles, anyone?

Syndrome is on the 2011 Villain claendar. If he can be remembered, Mother Gothel can be.

I HOPE that Mother Gothel will be popular!

Dear Disney Enthusiasts,

I HOPE that Mother Gothel will be popular! There is no Disney doll of her, but I hope that she will be popular, nonetheless, because she's sexy, interesting, pretty, etc.

Thank you in advance for your replies.

I think she deserves to stick around because she's so realistic. There really are manipulative mothers like that (ignore the part about hair and eternal youth). She's a subtle manipulator, but she has charisma to spare (especially in her song & reprise). And, she can be pretty intimidating. I know I got chills when she went back to the tower and found out that Rapunzel was gone. Whether she will be popular or not is different. I think she will be minimally popular, kind of like Lady Tremaine. She definitely won't have the huge following Maleficent has.

Bruce and the Cheshire Cat were on the Villains calendar!? Some people don't know anything.
