Bob Kane and Bill Finger created Batman, and yet Christopher Nolan's take on Batman is both fan and critically acclaimed.

Though I'd love to have Greg at the helm, to just blow the movie off because he isn't, is ignorant and a bit immature. Plenty of movies are adapted without the help of the original creator and do perfectly fine. Lord of the Rings for instance.

Yes, of course there are those who totally suck without the creator. But I'd like to first, know they are adapting the show into a movie and second, see it for myself, before I just sign it off as trash. With the right creative writing team, the movie could jump start the show.

Though looking back and to where we are now, this is one of those times, I wish the creators had just forgo the tv series all together. Never made it, and instead published a book series. Book series seem to have much longer lasting power than tv series, especially when we are talking such rich storytelling. Especially comparing the current comics to the series. The comics are a little more "adult", without taking away too much from the original core audience. For instance, Angela calling Thailog a "bastard", Elisa's underwear shots, and Goliath bleeding out. Also the short term, odd relationship between Goliath, Delilah, Elisa, and Morgan. Its unfortunate Disney got all the rights to that portion of Greg Weisman's magnificent brain, because we may very well lose much of it before he ever has a chance to share it all with us. I wish Disney would bring Greg on as a novelist to have a Gargoyles book series. Its cheaper than making an animated series and we'd lose that rich art, but it would be a sacrifice I'd be willing to accept if that meant knowing the full universe nearly as well as Greg himself.

You're confused. This movie will have nothing to do with the original Gargoyles animated tv series.

Wait... what? Siren was hypothesizing about a Gargoyles movie based on the '90's series, and how you shouldn't blow it off just because Greg wouldn't be behind it. I mean, I'm sure Siren knows this movie isn't about Gargoyles- she posted a video on the "Make a Real Gargoyles Movie, Disney!" Facebook group wall, after all...

Variety reports that Disney has finally hired writers to work on the long rumored Gargoyles movie. Unfortunately fans of the Disney Afternoon Animated TV show of the same name will be disappointed. This project will have only a passing similarity to the cartoon series.

David Elliot and Paul Lovett are the writing duo that brought us that mega hit GI Joe: Rise of Cobra who will now be working on a script for a ‘live-action’ Gargoyles. As Variety reports Disney is hoping this will become another franchise for them along the lines of Pirates.

Well, considering the fact the film is not based on the TV show, yes, I do know that the characters have no chance of being in this film. Similar archetypes, perhaps, but no Goliath, no Elisa, no Xanatos, etc.

Actually, if you head down by Station Eight (basically the Gargoyles Fan Mecca), I think you'll see a different picture. Most people agree that they could live with a bad action movie directed by someone like Michael Bay because, at the very least it would spark interest back into the original television series, and Disney might be inclined to finally release S2, V2 and even perhaps bring Greg Weisman back on board for a new series.

Also, if Disney has two franchises with similar premises about stone gargoyles that come to life, one a 1990s cartoon show and another Disney hopes will be a box office blockbuster, which one do you think will be brushed under the rug to keep the general public from being confused?

If Disney didn't even get writers yet, what on Earth is the point of not making it like the original, Goliath-starring series? Is their concept for this really so drastically different and they feel it needs be that way? Is it because their concept is very Twilightish and they think that will sell more? That's not even a good excuse because Goliath's picture of that girl kissing Goliath could be turned into something Twilighty.

No doubt interest they're trying to spark the interest of those who vaguely remember Gargoyles, similar to how things were with The Sorcerer's Apprentice. To be perfectly honest, though, I doubt this franchise will take off. I think Disney should stop trying to find the next Pirates of the Caribbean. That series was really a case of lightning in a bottle. Tron Legacy did reasonably fine but not as well as hoped, Prince of Persia and The Sorcerer's Apprentice flopped, and I think that Gargoyles and even John Carter are going to go the same way.

It's not a 'girl', it's detective Eliza Maza's first and last kiss with Goliath in the last scene of the tv-series Gargoyles, and certainly not anything that even remotely resembles Twilight. The show, like Eliza's relationship with Goliath, is way too mature to be turned into something that appeals to teen girls.

I made my last post under the assumption that a tie-in series DVD release still comes with this movie.

I think you guys are being to negative about it. I think it could be awesome, Goliath or no Goliath. And I still say who knows? Just because it's not based on the series, to me, to does solidify the fact that the characters could not play even a small role.

I'm sorry, but that is completely illogical. That's like saying if Warner Bros. planned to make a film about a futuristic family, the Jetsons would stop by.

Am I reading this completely differently than everyone? What am I missing? Does the passing similarity literally mean that the only similarity they two will have will be the fact that "there are gargoyles"?

Is this inspired by the series or not?

I had a feeling you missed this, but all the way back when the project was first announced a year ago, it was explicitly stated that the new film had nothing to do with Weisman's Gargoyles, aside from the basic concept. And nothing has changed since then.
