^That's a little harsh, isnt it? I mean, yeah some people say it disrespects the mythology. I say it expands upon it.

I'd say any perceived connection between the two characters is nothing more than a coincidence. Disney has made it clear they want to bury the existence of Sunflower and have done a pretty darn good job of it; she hasn't officially appeared within the film in over 40 years and the majority of the public have no clue she ever existed. In fact, I've stumbled across people that actually believed she was a conspiracy created many years later in order to defame the Disney company!
I highly doubt Disney would make any sort of direct, intentional reference to Sunflower in modern times, even in a positive way to "make up" or "apologize" for her. What would be the point of that? They want the world to forget she ever existed in the the first place and any kind of apology would be counter-productive to that.
I still say Iridessa was simply a replacement for Lily as the token black girl as the many characters from the books were stripped down to a smaller number for the films.

As Siren said, the bright yellow combined with the dark skin makes sense; as Margos said, she's a light fairy and sunflowers are known to turn their heads to follow the sun. While it's true there was a connection with sunflowers/seeds and the stereotypes in the past, that seems to be completely lost on modern audiences (otherwise we would have heard loud accusations of racism over these releases).

Thanks, I really needed that today.
Anyway, here's one of many examples I've seen through the years (note the posting dates are from 2004 and that the forum is closed before anyone here is tempted to tear any of these guys a new one

I used to have the
Cartoon Confidential book they're referring to from the early 90's, but I seem to have lost it. It's a really interesting book to read (despite the hideous cover) and I might look to pick it up again since it's pretty cheap on Amazon.
