Is this pro or anti? I think it's pro. But. I can't tell for sure. I love the Beatles and Disney too. But. It doesn't mean they should remake an iconic film. There's really no reason to do so at all.

Also, the reason you can't buy Beatles songs online is because the late Michael Jackson, who owns most of the Beatles' song catlogue, would not allow it. That's why it's very rare to hear the original versions of the Beatles' songs in movies as opposed to covers (see all of "I am Sam"). I'm not sure who got the songs since his death. Frankly, they might be sold off to pay his debts. Maybe Paul could get them back.

Paul could...provided Heather's divorce didn't wipe him out.

I can think of a few mothers and fathers who'd drag their Hannah-obsessed tween girls to see this. You know what I'm getting at: exposure to good music! :)

That's the only positive I can think of.

You should sent Rudy Matt a PM.
Why? :P

Because Itunes sucks.
Oh.. I thought that it was a problem with the Beatles record-company who doesn't want to give Itunes the rights to sell (original)music from The Beatles. But maybe you're better informed Goliath.

That is indeed the case. People need to realize that iTunes is a retailer and they don't make decisions like which songs are album only or which songs they carry or how much each song sells for because that is set by the record label. Labels were angry that Apple wouldn't let them charge more than $0.99 for songs, so they changed it to accommodate them. Apple (the record label that owns the original Beatles recordings) has not been willing to do business with Apple (the computer company that owns and operates iTunes). From what I've heard, the reason is Apple's (label) greed. They want to force consumers to buy the full album or compilation albums they put together because they get more money that way than if they let someone buy just "Hey Jude" on iTunes for $0.99.

Maybe we will have to wait a full 100 year, by that time The Beatles have become really classic and nobody has any rights to their music anymore. But than of course there will yet be another technology to play and obtain music and Itunes will be something of the past too.

This is because Apple Corps (Beatles) sued Apple (computers) over the name. The agreement was that Apple (computers) could use the name if they didn't get into sound. Apple (computers) did start having computers with sound. One of their early Macintosh "beep" sounds was called Sosumi ("So Sue Me"). Later, when they started iTunes, they really got into sound and music. Apple Corps did not like this! Thus, no Beatles on iTunes! At least until they patch up their differences.

Which one had the name first?

BelleGirl wrote:The original movie is fine as it is, I think it's pointless to make a 3D CGI version, a waste of money.
Oh GOD if only we were able to cancel or erase movies (and TV shows) because they're a waste of money... Image

However, I doubt that will ever become a possibility. :(

Apple the record label, but even though Apple the computer company makes software for recording music and owns iTunes, they still aren't in the business of owning a record label, so it's not like consumers will be confused by it. It's kind of a silly argument.

If a movie company isn't busy churning out sequels, they're churning out reboots. Sheesh, make with the original never-been-there movies, you lame film companies! -_-

Disney has officially announced the remake to Yellow Submarine! Toonzone has the story and press release:

"The Walt Disney Company and the Beatles' Apple Corps Ltd. have confirmed earlier news reports that a remake of the animated movie Yellow Submarine is in production, to be written and directed by Robert Zemeckis. The movie will use the same performance-capture technology Zemeckis used in The Polar Express and Beowulf."

"The full press release follows:"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"THE WALT DISNEY STUDIOS, THE BEATLES’ APPLE CORPS LTD. , AND OSCAR®-WINNING FILMMAKER ROBERT ZEMECKIS DIVE INTO NEW MAGICAL 3D ADAPTATION OF THE 1968 CLASSIC YELLOW SUBMARINE"

"Anaheim, California -- September 11, 2009 -- The Walt Disney Studios has made a deal with Apple Corps Ltd. to develop a new 3D performance capture adaptation of the 1968 hit animated film "Yellow Submarine" to be written and directed by Robert Zemeckis, it was announced today at the D23 Expo by Dick Cook, chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. The film will be created by ImageMovers Digital, Disney’s state-of-the-art performance capture animation studio operated in conjunction with Zemeckis and his partners, Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey, who will serve as producers on the project.

For this fantastic new voyage to Pepperland, Zemeckis will incorporate the16 Beatles songs and recordings from the original motion picture licensed from Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC and EMI-Capitol Records, respectively. The songs include “All Together Now,” “All You Need Is Love,” “Eleanor Rigby,” “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and “With A Little Help From My Friends” while combining his unique vision and style to bring this dazzling tale to life.

In making the announcement, Cook said, “This is truly an inspired collaboration, and a wonderful opportunity to revisit one of the most imaginative and memorable musical fantasies of all time. To be working with the amazing folks at Apple Corps, and to have Bob helming the sub is truly as good as it gets. With all those incredible Beatles songs and imagery, the spectacular vision of Bob and his pioneering team at ImageMovers Digital, and a classic adventure full of wit and action, we’re sure that moviegoers are going to have a great time on this latest trip to Pepperland.”

Zemeckis said, “’Yellow Submarine’ is one of the greatest fantasy films of all time, and making this new 3D performance capture movie is a dream come true for me. With the latest advances in technology, we will be able to take moviegoers on a voyage unlike any other, and bring new excitement and dimension to Pepperland and the various sea worlds they encounter. I’m thrilled to be working with the good folks at Apple Corps and our partners at Disney on this epic retelling of one of my all time favorite films.”

Jeff Jones, CEO, Apple Corps Ltd., said, “With The Beatles and Walt Disney Studios, we have a partnership between two of the best loved creative entities in the world. We're very excited about the magical fantasy that will result from this collaboration. The marriage of the music of The Beatles with the talent and technical wizardry of Robert Zemeckis and ImageMovers Digital should produce something very special. We look forward to working with Bob and his team on realising his new vision for 'Yellow Submarine'”.

The original motion picture (released in the U.S. on November 13, 1968) based on the music of The Beatles was directed by George Dunning and featured the inspired art direction and design of Heinz Edelmann. The movie is set in Pepperland, an undersea paradise inhabited by music lovers who live in peace and harmony and are protected by Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. That is…until they are threatened by the music hating Blue Meanies. It’s up to John, Paul, George and Ringo to set off on a magical adventure in their yellow submarine and bring music and harmony back to Pepperland.

About Apple Corps. Ltd.

Apple Corps Ltd. was founded by The Beatles in 1968 to look after the group's own affairs. The London-based company has administered the catalogue of The Beatles releases of the 1960s that have sold to date more than 600 million records, tapes and CDs. Since the 1990s Apple has piloted new Beatles projects that have become benchmarks for pioneering accomplishment and which have included The Beatles Anthology projects, the 28 million-selling album The Beatles 1 and the The Beatles LOVE show and CD. Further information on The Beatles' projects can be found at http://www.thebeatles.com."

I think the remake could live up to expectations (maybe Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr could help with the production as producers) plus, it's a great opportunity for MGM to release a new SE of the original on DVD (and maybe Blu-Ray)!

I hope Robert Zemeckis announces a remake of "Back to the Future" after this. After all, if he doesn't remake it, it will no longer be relevant for today's audiences.

And, Forrest Gump soon afterward.

Likewise, "The Polar Express" is so 2004. I think the time is ripe for a motion-capture remake in which the motion-capture original is run through a motion-capture machine to increase the motion-captureness and thus the relevancy. Also, more 3-D.

That is all. Oh, and what the hell, Disney.

Yeah, that's all.

Oh, and there's already a thread about this Yellow Submarine, FYI.

It almost feels like this (if Ichabod still came around, he'd be proud for linking this one to describe my frustration):
