According to DVD Empire, the list price is $69.99, but their current discount brings it down to $49.99. Doesn't seem to be up on Amazon yet.

Because the "Daria" pilot is a 10-minute pencil animation that wasn't intended for broadcast (it was done to sell the show to MTV). Thus, it makes sense to be a bonus rather than an episode.

I'm definitely buying this. I never saw the entire series but have viewed episodes here and there, and $40 (or possibly less later on) for that much stuff is way too low to pass on!

I've been watching a lot of episodes as of late and the series has definitely stood the test of time.

It's so good that I lament that animated sitcoms aren't allowed to have dialogue driven humor anymore. It has to be violent, loud, obnoxious and very satirical or it's not worth doing.

Sure, Daria does have moments of insane humor and funny sitcom-y moments (like the episode Depth Takes a Holiday, which is one of my least favorite episodes and the musical Daria episode), but the series is at its brightest when the humor is subtle and all dialogue driven.

The other great thing about Daria is how balanced it is in its writing. Yes, we have these two main characters who are cynical, sarcastic and anti-social and the people that surround them are the complete opposite, but the writers do a good job of making them shine too. Plus, they gave Daria and Jane very human qualities and weren't afraid of showing the other sides of their personalities, like them being vain and falling in love.

The final episode of the TV series (I know the second movie is the real finale) is fantastic. You see Daria being vulnerable to her own personality, realizing that her behavior can have dire consequences and begins to feel guilty about it. I thought it was wonderful and the most human we see Daria in all of the series.

Damn... I really miss the series now.

I'll agree that Boxing Daria (the last ep) is fantastic and probably one of my favorites. Not only is Daria at her most human here, we get a peek into her past and see why she is who she is. Plus it sorta brings the series full-circle with the whole "herd of beautiful wild ponies running free across the plains" bit from the very first episode. (I'll also agree that Depth Takes a Holiday is my least favorite of all the episodes. )

The characters and situations in this series are excellent, not to mention very relateable. I think the reason that Daria and Jane work as cynics is because they have every right to be cynical about living in a world that rewards looks and stupidity, and perhaps that's something many of the fans can relate to when given their point of view.

Even though it's an entirely different story told from a completely alternate point of view, how many people saw Mean Girls and thought of Daria, or more specifically, of the Fashion Club drones? I always found the relationships and hierarchy between girls fascinating, whether we're talking about high school or beyond. How the leaders are quick to find ways to keep their "queen bee" status by putting down and bullying others (Sandi, Regina) and those less confident lose who they are in the struggle to fit in (Stacy, Gretchen). And then there are the dumb ones that achieve a certain status only for their looks and being yes-men (Tiffany, Karen) or those that dumb themselves down in order to fit in (Quinn, Cady). I'm not sure I could really equate Quinn with Cady though while I'm thinking along these lines, as manipulative as both characters ended up being, but they seem to have a lot in common in that they're good people deep down that got caught up in the glamour of popularity. And as long as I'm making comparisons, Jane and Janis have a lot in common, being the dark, artsy type that revels in not fitting in since genuine relationships are more important to them than superficial ones. Interesting how Daria doesn't really have a counterpart . . . unless you count Damien? Ok, maybe I got a little OT there, and maybe I'm still a little wrapped-up in my old high school experiences, but it seems those types of relationships never go away throughout your life, whether you're dealing with friends, relatives, co-workers, etc. It's like that High School Never Ends song by Bowling for Soup.

One of my favorite episodes in which Daria is in her most human state of mind is "Through a Lens Darkly". For the first time we see Daria conflict herself with her vanity and her intelligence, often wondering if she is being a hypocrite for caring how she looks and how other people accept.

But what I love the most about that episode that proves that the writers knew what they were doing was that out of all the smart people that tried to counsel Daria (Jane, Aunt Amy and Jody) it was Britney the one that made the most sense, saying that it's human to be vain and that Daria shouldn't be beating herself up over how she wants to look.

It shows that even the dumb characters can sometimes speak the truth, even if they are unaware of it.

The more I think about Daria the more I hate current animated shows. Daria was so bold and even groundbreaking I am surprised very few people acknowledge it as one of the best ever. I mean, it was an EXTREMELY smart spin-off of a really, really dumb and grotesque show (Beavis and Butthead), it was on MTV, making it very relevant to the audience it was catering (the use of pop songs proves this) and wasn't afraid of being smart and watering it down for the teenagers. It spoke a lot of truths about beauty, intelligence, love, romance, relationships and even family.

It definitely reminds me of a time when MTV was bold and daring when it came to adult animation. Not only did you have dark, gothic shows like The Head, AEON FLUX, The MAXX you had the violent and dumb shows like Celebrity Deathmatch, Cartoon Sushi and of course Beavis and Butthead.

I would say MTV was at it's creative peek and predated Adult Swim when it came to presenting surreal, adult animation for the masses. Which is why it pains me that now all shows HAVE to be brutal, violent and graphic in order to be considered "adult".

Sorry, I am rambling now, but Daria is special to me.

Daria is special to a lot of people. I'm told it's in the top 10 most requested shows to be on DVD and was so for many, many years. Someone even started something called DVDaria or something- like a petition to get the show out.

By the way, I'm SO PSYCHO-happy about the clips from the "Daria Day" marathon on Mtv. I have that marathon on tape and part of the clips were recorded over by mistake.

I hope they make sure to include all the clips, because they didn't just intro 12 of the 13 episodes (they didn't show episode 4, "Cafe Disaffecto," at all), they also did an extra clip at least once each episode while they addressed fan questions (with sarcastic, non-serious answers of course) after some of the commercials.

Man, I've been watching too much Daria...

Last night I had a dream that they premiered a THIRD Daria movie! The movie took place 10 years after the end of the series and showed Daria and friends being college graduates and finding jobs. Like the 90s TV show the movie was up to date with modern music and current living.

The worse thing about it, though, was that the backgrounds were done in CG while the characters were in 2D. And it wasn't even cel-shaded CG. It was HORRIBLE! But the sharp writing and great story made up for it.

I was perusing barnesandnoble.com to see if they updated the Scenes listing for "thirtysomething": Season Three, and found that they did. Then I checked UD/DVDizzy's listing of other May 11 releases, and remembered "Daria" is also being released next week! So I checked B&N again, and found they updated the Scenes listing!

In short, here's a breakdown of the discs, showing which episodes get the "Daria Day" intros:

Disc One:

Still disappointed that "Look Back in Annoyance" isn't included, but otherwise, it looks to be a great set. I don't like how seasons are mixed on discs, but I guess that's the best way to get all 65 episodes and 2 movies on 8 discs.

The truly funny thing about that, Escapay? They only did Daria Day for I believe it was 1 day. August / September 1998. 12 episodes during the morning/afternoon and then Season 2's premiere that night. Then... they did a "Daria Day" esque intro for Is It Fall Yet? and "Fizz Ed"s premiere and that was it. I think... If they don't give us the Daria Day intros and "viewer mail" readings for all 12 of the first season episodes, I am not going to be a happy camper. I will not buy the set. I was thinking about it too. No full Daria-Day, no buy. That simple.

From what I've read online, there were three Daria Days (Daria Day 98, Daria Day 99, and Sarcastothon 2000), which is likely where the other intros are from. I wasn't aware that the first Daria Day was for all the Season 1 episodes, but even so, it's the episodes I'm after, not the Daria Days, so I'll still be buying the set.

A: we're gonna get raped on the soundtracks anyway. Much of the music choices are an integral part of the mood of the show.

B: the episodes have been up on YouTube for years. Almost all of them, including the movies. The company was losing money anyway.

C: for at least 5 years, this show has been one the most requested for the DVD format. If they have parts of something like Daria Day- they have the whole of it somewhere. What's their excuse for not giving us the whole? To them - it's not that long, it won't take up that much space.

D: the Daria Day segments are not on YouTube. I've looked. Nowhere to be found.

A: This is the only thing I have a problem with, and one I'll likely always regret in the official DVD release.

B: I don't want to watch "Daria" on YouTube, and the torrents for them are low-quality WMV or MPEG files. I want to watch "Daria" on DVD.

C: I checked wikipedia, which provided a link to transcripts for Daria Day 98 and Sarcastathon 2000. It looks like the intros on the DVDs are actually all from Sarcastathon 2000, not from "Daria Days". The only exceptions, oddly, are "Monster" and "Legends of the Mall", which I assume are from Daria Day 99 (since no transcript is provided for it).

D: As I said before, it's the episodes I'm after, not the Daria Day intros.

E: There are more things wrong with this set than right. I still want "Look Back in Annoyance" included, they should've struck a deal to include the original music, and also scrounged up more special features (such as the "Behind the Scenes at Daria" special that was hosted by Janeane Garofalo and is listed on wikipedia). However, there's likely no chance Paramount will ever revisit the series again on DVD, and a lesser chance that if they do, it'll be to include the original music. So I'll take what I can get when I can get it. Sure, it's a meager bone thrown to "Daria" fans, but at least it's a bone.

The price doesn't look too bad at Best Buy, I might pick the set up there. Even though it's clearly flawed, it's been a while since I've been this excited to pick up a release.
