Well,in film reviews it's not really overrated but look at all the marketing and all the merchandise, even Toy Story and Finding Nemo don't get as much as merchandise like Cars,I think WALL-E will be close to the Cars merchandise but still.
And I like,I actually think that Up will be my least favorite Pixar movie.
As for it being the first Pixar film to get a Blu-Ray release I thought it was because it was the most recent film, plus it was pretty to look at so they chose the movie to show case Blu-Ray. They did release Ratatouille and will release Wall.E too, so its mainly a case of releasing recent films first then the classics later.
Cars was the first Pixar film on Blu-Ray? see? it is overrated, and Ratatouille was released on Blu-Ray while even Finding Nemo and Toy Story weren't released it.
And Ratatouille had a weak marketing,no wonder Pixar were so angry while Cars keep getting more and more getting and this the only Pixar movie beside Toy Story that will get a sequel.

Doesn't that have more to do with the timing of the releases than what films they happened to be?
As far as I can tell, neither Finding Nemo or Toy Story have been released since Disney decided to release Blu-Ray titles.
I doubt we'll see Blu-Ray releases of further Pixar films until they get a major release (as in a new Pixar film coming to video) or re-release (an older Pixar film getting released to video once again). Seems we have the same pattern with other Disney releases.

But still.
Anyway, they should release the older Pixar films before Up will be released.

I'm sorry, Prince, but I think you don't understand what overrated means...
"Overrated" is when something is incredibly hyped as the best thing ever, giving it credit for something it never really did.
As much as I loved Ratatouille and Wall.E they are good examples of overrated films. Both have gotten AMAZING reviews, people couldn't stop talking about them and in Rat's case, won numerous awards. Yet, there are people who didn't like any of them or failed to see what the hype was all about. THAT'S being overrated.
Cars is, once again, NOT overrated. Like it has already been stated reviews for it were weak, audience response was mixed and the movie pretty much came and went. Compared to the last Pixar film before it (The Incredibles) the movie was considered a major bomb, especially for Pixar.
Cars, however, has been successful in the merchandise world. People like toy cars, and the characters lent themselves for great merchandise possibilities. That's why we have a ton of merchandise even when the film itself is weak.
From what I understand you see these toys and merchandise and think "Why does the movie get so much stuff when it was really bad?", then think "Overrated!". Again, this is NOT being overrated, just over merchandised.
LOTS of bad movies and underrated movies get tons of merchandise out, including toys, videogames and even clothes. Does that make them overrated? No. Remember the first "Hulk" movie? That movie was trashed to pieces, yet there was a ton of merchandise that did well.
As for Cars being the first Pixar Blu-Ray release, like I already said, they chose it because it was the most recent film available and likely met the high definition standards, so no extra work had to be done in order for it to shine. Plus, it served to test the waters before going in full swing with the releases. And I am SURE that Disney will go all out when the TRUE classics are released on Blu-Ray, like Finding Nemo, Incredibles and such.
So I implore you to rethink what overrated means. Cars is not an overrated film. Its quite the opposite. A lot of people see it as the weakest link in the Pixar chain. It just works better as a toy franchise, and thus the film is only popular there. But again, having a lot of merchandise does not indicate the quality of the film or the impact it has on the audience.

Oh,so it's overrated only in that cases? (In those cases,The Lion King is very overrated).
But about the merchandise-It's not a few merchandise for the film's release in theater,it's tons of merchandise and they"re making more and more, even Finding Nemo and Toy Story don't got so much merchandise, not like that and not in that quantity.

Five words: Batman and Robin Pop Tarts.
Anyone remember those? I do.
But anyways. papa64 you definately kind of cleared things up, I think. I totally disagreed that the film was "overrated" but I couldn't think of how else to put it in simple wording. Overmerchandising works.
And car toys ARE popular, consider Hot Wheels. It's kind of why the Disney Princesses are popular and (dare I say) overmerchandised, because they're in the same vein as Barbies (NOT the films, mind those of you who might get offended by that comment, JUST the dolls and toys. You can hardly call a Pixar film, EVEN Cars, "Hot Wheels," their merchandise just has similar appeal).
Anyone know about those Disney character themed Hot Wheel-esque cars sold in the Disney Parks? If that's any indication of car-related toys popularity. I liked Hot Wheels and other toy cars when I was younger, and look at those Disney cars from time to time to see if there's one I simply can't live without (haven't ever seen one, but I'm sure if I were 6-7 years younger... I'd buy 'em all).
ALSO: (just thought of this) I really love films like The Little Mermaid, Snow White, Cinderella, etc. and I don't consider them "girl" films, just like I don't consider Cars, Pirates, Narnia "boy" films. A majority of their merchandise (in the boy's case, action figures, playsets, NOT notebooks and I <3 Jack Sparrow t-shirts), however, it's a little different. Hot Wheels are "boy toys" and Barbies are "girl toys." I know I've heard Ariel'sprince bring this up on MANY threads, and while I think it's wrong, it's not only McDonald's and Disney, it's just the world, regrettably.

Haha I just realized how off-topic that was! I'm sorry.
Anyways.. CARS. Not overrated. Just overmerched.

Man, here we are, discussing the Cars merchandise, and
this guy reviews the cheap knock offs!

Then I agree with Skellington or Sparrow,Cars is over commercialized then any other Pixar movie, maybe little kids love cars so much so that's why it's so popular (I also remember I read somewhere that many people were looking for the Cars merchandise before the film was released) and maybe because little kids like princesses too then that's why the Disney Princesses are so popular,I wonder if WALL-E will be popular like Cars or he"ll be popular but not as Cars, like Finding Nemo and Toy Story.
And it seems that they think that High School Musical and Narnia are for both but now they seems to think that High School Musical is only for girls, they also think that Jessica Rabbit is for little girls now, this is just dumb, and about Pirates Of The Carribean-I think more 16 years old girls whould buy a Johney Depp pen then a 8 years old little boys,so acorrding to them Disney is only for girls beside Pixar films and Pirates Of The Carribbean,oh wait,POTC have Elizabeth Swann and Pixar films also have girls in them! then I guess that only little girls can love Disney and Pixar from now on

.
pap64-I know this guy,the second car is creepy

what's with those sharp teeth? that toy is scary, someone will actually buy that?.

Speaking of over-merchandising, I posted a link to a video showing two knock-off Cars toys in the Disney Knock-Off thread. Its so over merchandised, companies are making illegal toys.

Definitely heavy merchandising of Cars. My four-year-old nephew loves those little cars - he's probably got more than 50 of them! And I think they're quite nice myself, in fact...

I've seen
Cars on dvd only, and I didn't like it enough to buy it. It's the only Pixar feature film so far I do not have in my private collection (certainly planning to buy
Wall-E when it comes out on DVD)
As for
Ratatouille being overrated: I just love this movie and I cannot understand the complaints about 'to few laughs'. I think it is hilarious at times and I like the main character as well as the supporting ones.
Maybe it's because in general I have more affinity with fine food and cooking than with cars.
Cars is a nice enough movie, but misses the brilliance of
Monster's Inc. Somehow, the fantasy about a monster's city that depends on children's screams for the provision of energy, seems more 'logical' than a world of cars without people driving them. I can see the 'point' of the monsters, not of the cars fantasy.

Cars = Disney/Pixar's over-merchandised movie that was okay, but not like the best durn 3-D animated movie ever.
I mean, I thought it was a decent movie with an over-done storyline, except with talking vehicles as the main characters, but I only bought it used because it wasn't exactly a film that I felt that it was worth paying full price for (and yes, mine was legit - thanks for asking!).
I agree that despite the whole focus on car-racing and the absolutely amazing visual effects within the film, Cars is one of the weakest Pixar films. (Gah, I hate to admit it . . .) Close to A Bug's Life . . . but, meh, I'm an animation junkie - I usually like anything. XD
Personally, I found Ratatouille as a much more entertaining film than Cars. and it's one of my all-time favorite Pixar films (as is The Incredibles, yet another over-merchandised series by Pixar . . . *sigh*), but overrated? I don't think so.
Now back to the main subject . . . I personally think that Cars is overrated. Everyone thought it was good and the best thing ever because there's race cars and a rusty tow truck that is probably the only memorable character in the entire almost two-hour movie.
GAH . . . *steams*

Again, since no one apparently read my first post, what part of any Disney/Pixar movie don't you understand. They are all better than most of the crap that is out there today (i.e., Disaster Movie), they are all family oriented, and "Cars" as well as the others all have a very good story and a very good moral to them. Apparently, you are not watching the movie for anything else and when it comes to 'setting the table' for the moral outcome you turn off your brain so you can think about something else.
"Cars" is over-merchandized, I will grant you that, but it doesn't make it a bad movie. What about "Star Trek" movies, or even "Star Wars" movies, do you not think they are over-merchandized? I do!!!. But we live in a Capitalist nation, and if you can figure a way to make money at someone else's expense, go for it.
My Top Three Disney/Pixar movies are:
Cars
Monsters, Inc.
The Incredibles
and when "Wall-E" comes to DVD, we can move "Monsters, Inc." out of the Top Three down to number four. "Wall-E" will be number one. And look out.........here comes to more merchandising!! Just thought I would warn you ahead of time.

So, I thought of this post today while I was at Target. I was standing in line to check out, and what do you think I saw on the shelf next to me?
Yup, CARS merchandise! Cars air freshener to be specific, lol. And then I giggled a little more when I saw the Disney Princess version right behind it, just like I said, haha.

Personally, I agree that cars was overrated.
I never saw it in the theater, but when it came out all I heard was how wonderful it was. Everyone that saw it just raved. When I finally borrowed the DVD from a friend I was less than impressed. It ranks as my least favorite Pixar movie. I didn't enjoy the characters or the plot. Plus Larry the Cable Guy makes any movie that he's in just that much more obnoxious.
There was a lot of hype surrounding Cars, and I, for one, didn't get it.
Do I think it's a terrible movie? No, not at all. I just don't feel that it's Pixar's best or that it lived up to the hype. I hear they're making a Cars themed land in California Adventure, and to be honest I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't chose to make a land for one of Pixar's other movies.

FYI about the marketing-The Cars 2 (I think, acorrding to them) birthday party supplies are coming in 2009,the film will be released in summer 2011 (And for example-Sleeping Beauty PE will be coming in a few days and they don't have any Sleeping Beauty birthday party supplies on their website and there are Sleeping Beauty party supplies).

but they have disney princess party supplies, don't they? they're trying to market an initial release of a sequal, not the rerelease of a disney film that is already spoken for. and that makes perfect sense to me.

They also another Princess Part supplies and they also had party supplies for Enchanted,Cinderella (2 party supplies-Cinderella for the PE and Cinderella Dreamland for the Cinderella II re-release),Beauty And The Beast (Just Belle, actually) and The Little Mermaid, why not Sleeping Beauty? (And
there are Sleeping Beauty party supplies for the PE,just not in their website),there were Prince Caspian party supplies and they also don't have them in their website.
They should market the sequel but now? it's only coming in 2011,and Sleeping Beauty PE and Prince Caspian are being released now.

and if there's sleeping beauty and prince caspian party supplies out there, JUST not on the official website, then what difference does that make?
i do agree, though, 2009 is way to early to start merchandising the sequal.
