Or maybe because
charmant is French for "charming".

Well pinkrenata, thank you, and in that case Prince Charming should still be "Prince Charming" in Disney's version, as they translated the original French name "Cendrillon" ("cinder" is "cendre" in French) to "Cinderella".
It's possible that the name "Prince Charming" actually came from the French Perrault "Sleeping Beauty" ("La Belle au Bois Dormant"). I can't find a better, accurately typed in French quote, but in that story it says "le prince, charmŽ de ses paroles", and you can see that it looks like it says "Prince Charming". It really means "The prince, charmed by her words", in which case the just awakened Sleeping Beauty's the real one who did the charming!
