"Max Keeble's Big Move"

It was pretty good. Not Disney's best, but it was pretty darn entertaining!

I didn't know "Max Keeble" was Disney...

Yup, it is, Dan!

I just watched "Disney's American Legends". I had never seen the John Henry short before- it was interesting to me in that it didn't looked fully cleaned-up. I wonder if that was intentional or not. I really liked all the shorts, though!

"The Haunted Mansion"

I had wanted to see it since it came out, and I finally did! I really liked it! I was shoked that some of the language made it into the film, though.

You have to admit, those were some bigass termites. ;)

I caught In the Valley of Elah last night and all I can say is wow. Without a doubt in my mind, the best film of the year thus far and Tommy Lee Jones' best role in years. A very haunting and powerful film from Paul Haggis. I give it an A+.

Tonight, I'm seeing either Michael Clayton or We Own the Night. Will be sure to report back on that.

Cheers,

Well, added 2 more to my Halloween horror movie month score of... 6. Pathetic.

Image
The Initiation (1984) - C
I was somewhat surprised by this one... It's not very good at all, obviously, or some of you would have heard of it by now. :D But, even the minor characters actually had a little bit of character written for them. Which is impressive enough. There's at least one good shock / scare moment. The plot is completely cliched, the acting is mostly bad, gratuitous nudity is thrown in dumb places, but it's well-shot and edited, and some of the character related writing is interesting. It's a psychological horror movie mixed with a teen slasher flick where some of the psychology feels a little ambitious. I consider that a good sign. It's almost like the people making this didn't know anything about horror... or filmmaking at all, and tried to make a college psych flick. Lots of technical jargon and dream theories. Anyway, nothing about it is at all outstanding, but it's at least very watchable and in some moments quite entertaining.

unlike the next movie I put in my player:

Mountaintop Motel Massacre (1983) - D-
I'll give it points for surrealism. But, nothing else. The acting is dreadful, the special effects are unsatisfying, and there's no story whatsoever. All that's left is some eerie music, which there's plenty of, some shaky camera movement, a lot of murders, and too many scenes of people sitting around talking and singing. Crazy older lady goes on killing spree... and there's no explanation or reason why. Which in my opinion, takes almost all the suspense out of it. Not to mention it's 95 minutes long and absolutely nothing happens. Incredibly boring.

The Hunger (1983) - A
Astonishing and absolutely fantastic. Beats the pants off of Interview with the Vampire! It was so good, it left me with few words to describe it.

and
The Borrower (1989) (not yet on DVD) - B
If there was a point to it... I didn't get it. Too comedic and absurd. I don't know what it was doing or why it was doing it. But, I can't say anything about it was bad. The acting was good, the style was good. Sort of a combination of Re-Animator, Carpenter's The Thing, and the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Twins. Great ending, though.

I think that brings my monthly score up to 8. Pathetic. Where does all the time in a day go?

POTC (haven't seen it in a long time)

Twitches Too was fairly ok, kinda missed the 1st half but the rest was fun to watch.

Jungle Book: Platinum Very good to see my fav. film restored, filled with pleasing bonus feats. even though Louis Prima's recording session, trailers could've been used for Disc one or Disc 2. I watched the film with Audio Commentary since I pretty much know what the characters *chuckles*.

Patrick (1978) - C-
Got 1 more down... unfortunately, I had to dole out $19 for the DVD and it's not damn worth that much. This movie has some interesting psychological stuff in the plot, but the way it's shot completely stinks. The acting is a little more on than it's off. But the scenes of terror are completely free of terror- there's a swimming pool scene that will have you almost laughing (you have my guarantee) and it's supposed to be a scary moment. It's just not good. But it's not completely awful. Worst curse of all?

That makes 9 horror movies this month. Oh well. Let's celebrate the end of luxury free time!
