If this were done in live-action, I'd expect it to air on ABC and be something in the vein of "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles," and in that case, I think it has a lot of potential (though whether or not it will be a hit, I have no clue, and the quality might not have anything to do with that).

However, if it WERE to air on the Disney Channel, I'd prefer it be in animation. I wouldn't say everything on the Disney Channel is rubbish as long as they have stuff like Kim Possible and Lilo and Stitch. If it's at least as good as those shows, I think it'd be a good animated series and a fine way to continue the franchise. And, since Pirates is so huge, it's likely they WOULD try to make it high quality. Not guaranteed of course. They might think they could sell anything with the pirates name right now, but I think they'd probably try to make it high-end.

Personally, I think a 4th film would likely be a step down in overall quality (since I'm under the impression that it would have a different cast and different characters), as would be a live-action series with a fully grown Jack Sparrow NOT played by Depp. I don't think audiences would go for concepts like that, so I'd prefer it be a good animated series on the Disney Channel or hope that if it is live-action, it's like Young Indy in quality. I never really think a TV series or sequel is a bad idea, it just needs to be high quality rather than a rush to make money. And yes, a film/show can be both.

And let's not forget how great "The Real Ghostbusters" was. The animation wasn't even very good (I think it was from Japan), but it was a great show that didn't shy away from certain subject matter either!

Oh, yeah, I'd hate for it to be computer animated though. A shame that's the route Star Wars is taking with the continuation of Clone Wars...

in fact its rare that i like a 3D movie when its not pixar,

I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of Disney fans preferred 2D. Frankly, I'm open to 3D after accepting it, but I don't like that it is practically the only animation hitting the bigscreen nowadays. To me, only PIXAR really makes it as engaging as 2D usually is. Even Shrek doesn't reach that level for me. I do enjoy the Shrek films (haven't seen 3 yet), but I feel they (especially the first) are overrated. No way should Shrek have beaten Monsters Inc. for the OSCAR!

As for "The Wild," I don't think Disney was actually involved in making that one (or Valiant, which I haven't seen yet but heard was good). Sad, but I'm pretty sure I heard Walt once say that one of his rules was that any Disney-released films would be Disney-made films. Of course, then we wouldn't have PIXAR in the Disney family, which was always very helpful to Disney.

Yeah, well, like I just posted in the off-topic thread, at least Dr Who keeps reinventing itself every 2-3 years. Even Tom Baker's years reinvented themselves 3 times - from gothic horror to hitchhikers comedy to hard sci-fi. Some reinventions are more successful than others, but it never stands still.

You should of picked on my love of Scooby-Doo, which (if done right) doesn't change at all.

Well, I'm sure there's no small number of folks who would disagree with you about Jack Sparrow not being "that good." However, Pirates has only just completed its first trilogy/story. It might not go far beyond that, but it's a bit early to start saying it never reinvents itself.

I'm all for this. From the article I'm guessing animated since they mention they want to get celebrity voice overs. If it's done wrong it could be terrible, but if done right it could be the best animated Disney series in a LONG time. And speaking of celebrities how good would it be if they could (very unlikely) get Depp to voice Jack!

Since they say it covers how he becomes a Pirate I'm guessing this would be set after the young Jack books, from the time he freed Beckett's cargo of slaves, made a deal with Jones and became a pirate. That gives them a good 12 years to base the series in. That is of course assuming they want to keep this in continuity with the books and films and not just do their own thing completely.

Hopefully we'll hear more soon!

I haven't read the young Jack books, but just what you wrote sounds very interesting. Captain Jack's background would make a great animated show, at least on paper!

There are some things that honestly should stay live action. The Pirates series has run its course (even the second one was kinda unnecessary) and with the announcement of a fifth movie, an animated series would really be milking it dry.

From what I recall, Disney did actually plan a cartoon based on the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. It was called Swashbucklers, but for unknown reasons it was never followed through. That's why we have stylized character designs floating around in some of the merchandise, like with the figures and comics.

No those designs suck. They tried to make them so similar looking to the actors and didn't realize how awful they looked.

Besides what works best for these films are performances, and I doubt much of the cast would return to voice their characters (they didn't in KHII). So then where's the appeal?

This ain't the 80s where every movie franchise had an animated series to keep the merchandising boosting.

They also made animated shows based on movies in the 90s and early 2000s as well.

Let's not forget Tron Uprising was an excellent spin-off to the Tron movies.

Let's not forget the chairman/spokesperson of the Walt Disney Company in this forum
