Junkie, I'm actually dying to see that. Even though I wasn't so thrilled with Crash, I'd love to see Elah. I was actually thinking of seeing it tonight! :D

Another movie to consider for Academy Awards this year has got to be American Gangster. Denzel Washington's performance is over-the-top, and I think that he will be among the leaders for a nomination this year.

Another candidate for Best Director should be Ben Affleck for Gone Baby Gone. This movie is solid with story, scenery, and just overall total satisfaction as a motion picture. With a cast that includes Casey Affleck and Ed Harris, this movie has some very good Oscar potential.

The Academy announced today that 59 songs are in the running for the Best Original Song category. On January 15 the Academy Music Branch will screen clips from each song then vote to determine if there will be 3, 4 or 5 nominees in the category. The nominees will be announced, of course, on January 22.

Here's the list:

“Do You Feel Me” from “American Gangster”
“At the Edge of the World” from “Arctic Tale”
“Someday” from “August Rush”
“This Time” from “August Rush”
“Raise It Up” from “August Rush”
“Break” from “August Rush”
“Nothing’s There” from “Badland”
“The Devil’s Lonely Fire” from “Badland”
“A Hero Comes Home” from “Beowulf”
“The Stars of Orion” from “Berkeley”
“Say” from “The Bucket List”
“To Be Surprised” from “Dan in Real Life”
“My Hands Are Shaking” from “Dan in Real Life”
“I’ll Be OK” from “Dan in Real Life”
“December Boys” from “December Boys”
“So Close” from “Enchanted”
“That’s How You Know” from “Enchanted”
“Happy Working Song” from “Enchanted”
“Atkozott Egy Elet” from “56 Drops of Blood”
“O, Atyam!” from “56 Drops of Blood”
“Eleg!” from “56 Drops of Blood”
“A Dream” from “Freedom Writers”
“Lyra” from “The Golden Compass”
“Good Luck Chuck” from “Good Luck Chuck”
“Shut Me Out” from “Good Luck Chuck”
“I Was Zapped by the Lucky Super Rainbow” from “Good Luck Chuck”
“Grace Is Gone” from “Grace Is Gone”
“Lullabye for Wyatt” from “Grace Is Gone”
“Come So Far (Got So Far to Go)” from “Hairspray”
“The Tale of the Horny Frog” from “The Heartbreak Kid”
“China Doll” from “Honeydripper”
“It Will Stay With Us” from “The Hottest State”
“Never See You” from “The Hottest State”

“Despedida” from “Love in the Time of Cholera”
“Huck’s Tune” from “Lucky You”
“Little Wonders” from “Meet the Robinsons”
“Another Believer” from “Meet the Robinsons”
“Way Back into Love” from “Music and Lyrics”
“PoP! Goes My Heart” from “Music and Lyrics”
“Ordinary People” from “Music Within”
“Pretty Much Amazing” from “Nancy Drew”
“Falling Slowly” from “Once”
“If You Want Me” from “Once”
“Le Festin” from “Ratatouille”
“Land of Quiet Poems” from “Resurrecting the Champ”
“Love Will Still Be There” from “September Dawn”
“Royal Pain” from “Shrek the Third”
“Rule the World” from “Stardust”
“Before It’s Too Late (Sam and Mikaela’s Theme)” from “Transformers”
“Baby Don’t You Cry” from “Waitress”
“Beautiful Ride” from “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story”
“Walk Hard” from “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story”
“Let’s Duet” from “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story”
“Back Where You Belong” from “The Water Horse”

For some stupid reason, Hairspray only submitted "Come So Far (Got So Far To Go)" for consideration and NOT "Ladies Choice" (which would have been my first pick). Very dumb decision, they should have submitted BOTH songs. So here are my choices for the category:

"That's How You Know" (Enchanted)
"Come So Far (Got So Far To Go)" (Hairspray)
"POP! Goes My Heart" (Music and Lyrics)
"Falling Slowly" (Once)
"Let's Duet" (Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story)

I don't think Pirates will get a nom this year. AWE didn't really add anything that wasn't featured in DMC.

I'd put my money on
Potter 5
Transformers
Spider-man 3

With Spidey winning the award. Sure Transformers had awesome effects, but the "birth" of Sandman was far more visually stimulating than anything TF offered.

Enchanted NOT even being considered for Visual Effects? and "True Love's Kiss" not considerd for song? What's up with that? Here's hoping "That's How You Know" or "Come So Far" will win.

I am a bit concerned that Ratatouille won't win the Best Animated Feature nomination, however Pixar has won over a foreign animated film before, so we'll have to wait and see.

I wish Persepolis was in the Foreign category instead of animation...

I've seen Ratatouille on many Top 10 lists and Persepolis on very few. I think the rat will pull out a victory.

Yeah, it's supposed to be the best-reviewed film of the year...

As for the noms, I'm happy for Johnny Depp, Juno, and Enchanted, but I really doubt they'll win much. Juno will probably get away with a few (crosses fingers for Best Screenplay at least), and Enchanted has a pretty good shot at Best Original Song. Do we know which three are nominated? Perhaps Carrie will perform Ever Ever After at the show?

Congrats to all the other nominees! I'm glad the awards this year are spread among a wide range of films. I hate it when its just five or six films getting everything.

PS Dottie, I love your avatar/siggy set! I seriously hope that show comes back soon! My favorite scene is from the horse episode when Olive and Chuck are talking to the "dead" guy and they both go "yay!" So cute! :D

The nominated songs for Enchanted are "That's How You Know," "Happy Working Song," and "So Close."

Thank you. I so hope the writer's strike is over soon so that all our favorite shows come back and hopefully a real Oscar ceremony, not like the Globes.

I am really happy for Juno's nominations and the movie would deserve at least Best Screenplay. Let's hope for the best.

"So Close"??? Personally, I think "True Love's Kiss" should have been on there...

But anyway, congrats to Juno, Enchanted, and Ratatouille! My favorite films off of that list! :)

"So Close" TOTES deserves the nom. Methinks "Enchanted" might pull a "Dreamgirls" and shoot itself in the foot by having three nominations, and "So Close" will win. Just a hunch.

Wish Helena got a nom... but, there you have it.

And who would have EVER thought "Norbit" would be nominated for an Oscar? My word. I certainly hope something else wins in that category.
