I don't think he cared much about who dubbed the English versions as long as the script and story stayed the same. If he cared, he would have made sure Princess Mononoke had better voices when it all started.

This movie to me is kinda meh. I seems too....dumbed down.

In an update to the recent Ponyo news, Variety reports that John Pixar's Lasseter is working with Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy to make Hayao Miyazaki/Ghibli's Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea "the studio's biggest hit ever Stateside." According to the piece, Ghibli has been frustrated that their films have only found a niche audience about anime fans and arthouse goers.

From the Variety piece:

The goal is to boost both the number of screens and the box office take beyond Ghibli's record for a U.S. release set by "Spirited Away," the Miyazaki toon that earned a little more than $10 million on 714 screens in 2002 and 2003.

If you REALLY believe that, than you should really reconsider what you thought. That is the worst way to learn Japanese. If you told a japanese person that you learn words by anime etc, thy will laugh at you. I'm not kidding. That is just pure weeboo-ism.

I wonder if that has anything to do with hiring Noah Cyrus & Frankie Jonas...some kids might want to see the movie just because those two are doing voices in it...

I wasn't necessarily talking about Japanese language, you know. I stand by what I said: all foreign films, TV shows, etc. (and by foreign I mean in a language different than your own) should be seen in their original language AND it's good for learning different languages - you pick up a lot of things you wouldn't find in a textbook. I'm a living proof. I also know a girl who learned Spanish just by watching Mexican soap-operas.

You guys are going to love this movie. It took me two viewings to like it, but now I love it.

This is my first Ghibli I will be watching in theaters since I became a fan two years ago! Anyone going to watch it theatrically?

I eagerly await the day I'll see this movie. The theaters that are going to play it in the east coast of the US will probably be too far away from me but I look forward to the DVD at least. I adore Studio Ghibli films! ^_^

In Japan, the movie's getting a 9-disc Limited Edition DVD set in July.

^Of course, that's when it's still Studio Ghibli. Disney's release,ultimately, will include 2 or 3 deleted scenes, a featurette or two, a crappy music video, and a Digital Copy. And to think, that's the "special edition".

Most of it is just Joe Hisaishi's concert. But still...his music is AMAZING. One of my favorite composers ever!

It's all on youtube but, I'd love to have it on my shelf forever.

Are blu-rays region free? I'm thinking about ordering Ponyo from Japan. I doubt Disney will give Ponyo such an honor.

^Some are, but it's hard to tell which ones from some studios.

I just checked blu-ray.com and it appears as though it isn't on disc in JP, yet, and won't be until the US gets one. It'll be the same disc, with English subs.

Variety reports that Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s Ponyo will be the closing night film of the 2009 Los Angeles Film Festival on June 28. Ponyo which follows the story of an ordinary boy and his friendship with Ponyo, a goldfish who wishes to be human, features the voices of Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Cloris Leachman, Liam Neeson, Lily Tomlin, Betty White and Frankie Jonas. The Los Angeles film festival opens June 18 and includes 70 features, 70 shorts, and 50 musicvideos. Ponyo opens across United States on August 14.

I'm very excited for this film. I've loved everything Miyazaki I've seen. Honestly, that's only "Kiki's Delivery Service", "Spirited Away", and "Howl's Moving Castle". But I adore them!

Plus I really love the cast- Tina Fey, Lilly Tomlin, and Betty White! Only Julie herself could make it better.

I, too, am very excited for this movie. I've only seen three Studio Ghibli films, "Kiki's Delivery Service", "Spirited Away", and "The Cat Returns", and Kiki is one of my favorite films!

This has a really good voice cast--Betty White, Lily Tomlin and Cate Blanchett in particular. I don't know where Tina Fey came from though.
