i'll probably get the blu-ray but i hope they get rid of that hideous silver curve first by then. i don't have to worry about buying a blu-ray player since i have a ps3 . i'm only getting this because i missed the first one. after this the only platinum re-releases i'll be looking forword to are SW, BATB, and LK since i didn't start doing DVDs until about 2004, 2005.

does that mean that ALL of the PE are going to be re-released..that would totally suck for people like me who have mostly all of them. i hope and pray that the re-releases will be re issues with possibly a new cover or something. i only need the new ones coming out SW and BatB.

This is very interesting news. Even though I already own the SE, I'll pick up the Blu-Ray PE, even if I don't have a Blu-Ray player by then. I have no intention on upgrading my entire DVD collection to Blu-Ray (especially since the players will upconvert them to a certain extent). I only plan on upgrading my Disney animated classics and a few other select titles. Sleeping Beauty would be an excellent title to start my Blu-Ray collection with. My only concern is that they leave off bonus materials from the SE. Then again, if the Pirates DVDs are any indication, Disney may port over everything and add some new stuff, which would be most welcome. I just hope the cover art is better than the SE's.

I already have the SE of Sleeping Beauty. I might consider double-dipping for the PE release, but I'll have to see the list of extras first.

Really? I loved the cover art for the Special Edition, I was wondering if the Platinum Edition cover art would be able to measure up. I guess it would be nice to see Maleficent on the cover, in human form, and perhaps make the fairies a little bit larger. I'm excited to see what it looks like already

Well, I actually love the overall layout and color scheme of the cover. What I hate, though, is how Aurora and Phillip look. Aurora looks like she got botox, her hair looks like it's made of yarn, and she's in pink. Phillip looks like Jay Leno and is staring at her blankly when he should be kissing her. I'm hoping for more on-model artwork for the PE.

I am really glad that finally SB was officially confirmed to be the second PE in 2008, but my concern is that all the stuff on the Blu-Ray Disc will be on the regular DVD-PE as well.

I am just hoping that they do not bump 101 Dalmatians AGAIN. They pulled that when Peter Pan got released. I already own Sleeping Beauty anyways.

Well it was printed on the Peter Pan: Platinum Edition booklet, so I think that means it's pretty much set in stone.

This is very disappointing news to me. First off, I already own the SE of Sleeping Beauty. It is not a favorite of mine, and I'm pretty sure I will not be double dipping on this release. Secondly, Pinocchio deserves a new release 100000000000000000000000 times more than SB ever does. (Sorry Sleeping Beauty fans, but Pinocchio was Disney's 2nd animated film, and it was last released going on 10 years ago!! And Pinocchio's current DVD is absolutely impossible to find!) Thirdly, I still think Disney is jumping the gun (so to speak) on BluRay. I personally don't know a single soul where I live (aka: in real life) who owns a Blu Ray (or even HDDVD player) and buys the disks for said system(s). The systems are still WAY too much money, and the disks are still $30 minimum! I firmly believe that neither formats will take over DVD. HDDVD/BluRay might become alternatives to DVD, but the average guy will not be looking to replace his/her new collection of DVD's for simply a better picture. I don't believe that's how many members of our society work. Now if the price of the players and the new disks would drop enough to be the same price as the current DVD's and systems, I might understand and agree that BluRay/HDDVD would become the new format. I mean heck, if I could choose between a regular DVD and a BluRay disk of the same film and it's the same price, I would chose the BluRay in an instant because of its better quality. But that's not what's going on right now.

For example, At my local Best Buy all of the HDDVD and BluRay's are still there. There are no empty spots, which means no one is buying them.

Sorry to be ranting about that, but I really do believe that BluRay will become the next Laserdisk.

I agree. I really think Blu-ray and HD DVD are going to be the next Laserdisc. Laserdisc wasn't a failure though, it just never was "mainstream".

However this announcement is great news for me. I never got the 2 disc thats OOP so I will be picking this one up. Not sure if I'll go Blu-ray or not though. A lot can happen in a year so who knows. With $500 players now we will probably have $300ish ones next year. Plus the Blu-ray Spec might finally be finished. (j/k its supposed to be finished sometime this year)

I wonder if we will see more Animated Classics on Blu-ray in 2008 or if this will be the only one.

Anyway, I'm excited for Sleeping Beauty to be coming out. Even though I ended up with two copies of the SE, it's one of my favorite DACs and I can't wait to see it in all its high-definition Blu-Ray goodness.

(Of course, I'll be like Kelvin, and be buying it even though I know I won't have a Blu-Ray player in 2008! But it's better to stockpile now than later!)

Well, back then the differences between the ever popular VHS's and the new DVD's were ten-fold what the differences between BluRay and regular DVD's. Sure, BluRays have improved picture and sound as well as more disk space (but judging by previous releases, specifically Disney ones, they may not fill that much more space on these new disks that we would have on regular DVD's). And when you get to picture/sound quality, I'm not sure I really want that much improvement on older films. All one has to do is to look at Cinderella for the perfect example. There, the colors are slightly distorted from its original print to make it look sharper and "restored." I have a feeling that the restoration that will be given to a majority of the DAC's that make it to BluRay will be similar to Cinderellas in a nutshell. Now I'm just curious, but if the DAC's recieve that sort of treatment on BluRay (just use Cinderella's PE as the example as far as the picture; basically over restored picture with slight distortions from how it was originally shown) would you buy these new disks where the regular DVD might have the same transfer as the SE? Also, why would you NEED older films (pre-1950's/60's) on BluRay where a number of them are restored the way it was shown already and further restoration would distort the picture? I believe this true especially for films from the 1920's and before...especially shorts like the Silly Symphonies or silent movies.

who's to say they will get the same treatment as Cinerella. and the only other difference i can see about the blu-ray is that case is a third or so the size of the DVD's. and what's even better is that if there is a quadrilogy of a film and how hard it is to put three on one disc well this rmoves the problem by putting all four on one disc and still have room for a few featurettes 30 minutes long, deleted scenes from all the films, outtakes from all four, and a lot more than that so it'll be kinda hard to find a two-discer if blu-ray gets rid of DVD.

Am I the only one who is majorly disturbed by this? A blatant spelling error in an official press release? It's not even remotely funny - it is very concerning that they don't have any type of verification or proof-reading process as a major organization.

Not true. I just purchased the Blu-ray disc Bridge to Terabithia from Amazon.com for $23.95. Not too much more than a SE DVD. It will NOT be the next laserdisc. HDTV is not going anywhere, high def DVD's won't either, IMO.

I think its odd that a lot of people thought because Blu-ray and HD DVD had a lot more space compared to DVDs that they could put more stuff on the discs. The HD transfers of the movies take up a lot more than the SD transfers on DVDs.

Sure you could probably put a whole season of a show on 1 Blu-ray disc, but it wouldn't be in HD. So then you loose the whole point behind the new formats, which is HD.

HDTVs will become the norm, but I still don't see either HD disc format doing this. Maybe in several years, but by the time it happens I'm sure something else will be in the works to replace HD DVD/Blu-ray.

The HD discs in stores are expensive, but if you order online you can find some pretty good deals like kbehm29 said. Around $20 to $25 is the norm on Amazon. HD DVD combo discs (Wished they would stop releasing these things) and box sets are still more expensive no matter where you get them from.

you know right now they're trying to make DVDs that can hold up to 2 TBs or Terabytes along with PB or Petabytes and maybe EB or Exabytes. that would probably hold the whole of a disney show or a short lived show. but you know i doubt they will ever get to ZB or Zettabyte and YB or Yottabytes since there aren't that many bytes out there.

I am also disturbed by Disney's Lack of proof-reading. When I started this thread, I typed "Blu-Ray", and then I read the way Disney spelled it in the article, "Blue-Ray. I figured Disney was right and I was wrong, so I changed all my "Blu" to "Blue". Now I'll go back and edit the first post so everything I typed is spelled correctly.

I am the Biggest Sleeping Beauty fan, so I am so happy for this release. It is the ONLY, I repeat ONLY Disney Animated Classic that deserves a huge first release on Blu-Ray, due to its artistic backgrounds and Characters. It's the most visually stunning Animated Classic, I've ever seen, and should be the first to make it onto Blu-Ray. I do feel bad for Pinocchio fans. It isn't fair. Pinocchio is getting cheated, but you know what TOUGH LUCK. I mean no offense, but Disney did the same thing to my other favorite film of all time, 101 Dalmatians, when it was swapped with Peter Pan. That was not fair, and this isn't either. We all have our favorite films, and Disney is not the most reliable when it comes to releasing them. But I see where Disney is coming from. Sleeping Beauty is a princess film, that has huge marketing opportunities (especially with Enchanted Tales). I cannot wait for this to be released. I'll be buying allot of copies of both the DVD and Blu-Ray (I have only two copies of the SE). Plus, now I think it’s time to buy a Blu-Ray player. Oh, and Disney if your listening PLEASE give us much better cover art, than what you gave us for the SE.
