Jingle All The Way

As bad as the movie really is, I enjoyed it. I will be picking this up whenever its on sale.

Well, I just picked up Secret of Nimh... I have been waiting for a widescreen version of this for quite a while...

I can't recall if I actually saw a widescreen DVD of this several years ago, or not (it could have been All Dogs Go to Heaven.) If I DID see a WS version of either DVD, it has long since been discontinued for the standard version only.

You might have seen an R2/R4 release, as every R1 release has always been a standard open-matte version, though it changed covers quite often...

The first three are from dvdaf, and show the two 1998 releases, and the 2001 re-release. The fourth obviously is the Family Fun Edition. Not pictured is the 2006 re-release which duplicates the 2001/2007 cover, but with the modified MGM red-line banner on the top and the removal of the MGM Kids logo in the corner.


Escapay

The Family Fun edition of The Secret of Nimh seemed pretty stale. I dont think it was even necessary to even make a two-disc set of this film. Disc Two only has five games and a 15 minute featurette. They couldve easily put those on disc one with the other features.

I'm surprised they made a Family Fun Edition of "The Pebble and the Penguin" or even a featurette for that matter (given it was Don Bluth's 'big box office bomb'). I'm curious to see the film again to see if it was that bad and what kind of making-of featurette they did (given that Don Bluth walked off the film before it was completed)

Since 4 of the 6 Family Fun editions have been Don Bluth animated films, I figured this is as good a place to ask as any...

What is the correct aspect ratio for his films?

With the Family Fun editions, we either get a Widescreen version (Anastasia) or both versions (Nimh,) AFAIK... However, as Escapay mentioned, Nimh has previously only been available in an "Open-Matte" version, which I always avoided because I thought it was Pan & Scan.

Is it pretty certain that most of the "Standard" DVDs would be open-matte (giving more picture at the top and bottom, and nothing off the sides,) instead of actual Pan&Scan where we lose some of the widescreen picture?

While I I like Casper Meets Wendy...... I think All Dogs Go To Heaven should and does deserve a 2-disc rather than Casper Meets Wendy although could this be the first "Family Fun Edition" labeled DVD without a 2-disc Release....... If it is I for sure won't be picking it up... If it's 2-disc I might consider buying it.... What Can I Say...I Can't Resist those 2-discs....no matter how light and fluffy they are I love 2-disc DVD sets...

I didn't realize that the Family Fun Edition of Home Alone was a One disc... I figured with all of the special features it was a 2-disc.... You see I have not bought the FFE of Home Alone yet so I didnt know... I might pick it up next time Wal-Mart has the FFE of Home Alone packaged with Home Alone 2

I'm hoping that Home Alone 2 gets an FFE one day. Then I'll consider buying both of them together.

I just finally got the "family fun" edition. I have to say I'm a bit disappoitned with the transfer--the sorta flickering/shadowy thing to some scene shasn't been ficxed--but maybe it can't ever really be. Still it's great to have and probably the best we can expect for a while of one fo my fave aniamted movies.

As for ratio I believe Bluth, for whatever reason always worked open matte until Anastasia which was one of the rare full widescreen animated movies (the first since Black Cauldron or Thief and the Cobbler I think). Titan A.E was likewise full widescreen.

I usually rpefer to watch every film in its original theatrical ratio--open matted or not. But with NIMH I'm torn--it's annoyign that for the ornately bordered end credit images the top and bottom fot he borders are now gone cuz of the letterboxing--hwoever there are a few scenes where I swear it's not just a diff of open matte--but you do get more side info when watchign letterboxed. I gues since we have the option to watch both I shouldn't complain.

I'm a big Bluth supporter but can't remember anything from Pebble and the Penguin--I assume he refused to take part in the documentary given he removed his name from the credits and never finished it. But I remember it being thoroughly unmemorable--even compared to Troll in Central Park. SHocked it got a 2 disc edition... (I dunno who owns the rights but while All Dogs wasn't a huge hit, it was a MASSIVE Video hit at the time--being MGM/UA's top video hit up tot hat time, 1990 after Wizard of Oz so I woulda thought it would get a release first)

In the future we might see these films The Pagemaster, Titan A.E. and Once Upon a Forest as Family Fun Edition. But I prefer to see as Famliy Fun Edition are All Dogs Go to Heaven and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
