2099net, Loomis, and Paka all make great points and I agree with all of them to a point.

I personally don't like many of the sequels that I've seen, I haven't seen all of them, but I was able to appreciate some, Aladdin and the King of Theives. I understand that disney needs these to make money, but atleast make them good, because it does deterriorate their reputation to put out so many bad, some mediocore films. Release sequals DTV so good that people ask themselves, "Why wasn't that released in thaters, like the rescuers.

Personally as a kid I couldn't wait for an Aladdin sequel to come out, but even as a small child I was disapointed at how the quality had gone down,(and as a side note, I always thought Aladdin and Jasmine were married at the end of the first one and noone can convince me otherwise) Even a few years ago I was excited at the prospect of the Little Mermaid 2, Which had great potential, such a great premise, simple as some might see it, that illustrates the new theme that "where ever you go there you are" or "the grass is always greener", ect. I think that they could have made that theatrical releaqse worthy, but no. Cinderella 2 was so freaky god aweful that i really did want to gauge out my eyes, but was forced to sit and watch it with my family. That is a perfect example to illustrate my philosophy that if a story ends "...Happily Ever After" DON'T MAKE A SEQEUL!!!

Anyway if you haven't already, go back and read 2099net, Paka, and Loomis thougholly, becuase they all make great points. (sorry bout the misspellings, it is one of my biggest faults)

How come A Goofy Movie is edited pan-and-scan on DVD but it's poor DTV sequel is 1.66:1 Widescreen?

I think that Disney makes their cheapquels in widescreen so they can release a few of them to theaters like The Jungle Book 2 or Return to Never Land.

Same goes for the live-action George of the Jungle and the DTV sequel coming in the fall. In fact, MOST sequels have gotten better DVD treatment than the originals. Silly.

I haven't enjoyed a single cheapquel to this day. I'm on the extremists side. Like Paka, I will NEVER buy a cheapquel, even if it's a lost cause. If I buy a sequel I am telling Disney that this is a good thing that needs to be encouraged.

Mark my word tho, the moment Disney produces Shrek 2 quality-type sequels I'd be the first in line. Until then I will enjoy the original animation features!

I really enjoy most of the sequels...i consider some to be cheapquels but most of the time i just like seeing the characters again...and if the sequels bad it doesnt tarnish my ideal of the first...and whne it comes to disney DTV's , i never expect them to be better than the first...but rather an addition to it.

I own "
-Return to Neverland - Grew up with Peter Pan as a favorite film...and can honestly say i like RtN better, or just as much.
-Aladdin 2 and 3- looking back return of jafar has shoddy animation but it was the first so it's exempt...story is nice...King of thieves is great too.
-Mulan II - Thought it was excellent addition to the Mulan movie.
-Little mermaid II - perfectly passable...nothing compared to the original but it wasnt trying to be compared to it.
-Extremely Goofy Movie -Excellent Film...nice addition to the First...although a more proper grand third film would be Great!
-Pocahontas II - I loved this movie...i think her and john rolfe are awesome...and it has okay animation for it's time.
Lady and the Tramp 2 -cute addition to first...again nice animation
Lion King 2- very good
Lion king 1 1/2 -also great
Princess Diaries 2 - yea not animated but was good

Plan to Buy( have and havent seen)
-101 Dalmations 2
-Stich has a Glitch
-Bambi 1 1/2
-Tarzan II
-Kronks New Groove
-one day "Hercules II: The Trojan War" ONE DAY!!!

You're kdding, right? It practically screamed 'I'm mimicing The Little Mermaid with poor animation".

Has Hercules II been announced? Never heard of that title before.

Of animated sequels, I have:

The Lion King 1 1/2
The Lion King 2
The Return of Jafar
Aladdin and the King of Thieves

I also have Rescuers Down Under on order. I agree with the oft-expressed sentiment that sequels are fine (in most cases), so long as they are treated with respect, care, and an honest assessment of their appropriateness (which is too often not the case, especially with Disney).

I didnt mean plot wise...i meant like little mermaid 2...didnt come out asking "Look at me arnt i better than the first??!?". It just came out, sure the story is repettive since it uses the same device from the first film but is copying the little mermaid truly mean poor quality?...At least it has the enjoyable parts of little mermaid and some good new ones...no one is asking you to expect it to be the first.

and on the "Hercules II" front...disney had it on the slate a while back...no clue if it's still there, but since we get no real confirmation on titles about a year in advance we might know by years end. Im sure all the recent DTV success will give us confirmation on a Hercules II

I haven't seen very many sequels, but I've generally stayed away from them, as I don't have too much money to spare on buying or renting. The ones I have seen are:
Stitch!: The Movie
The Rescuers Down Under (Saw this in theatres, a great movie!)
Atlantis II: Milo's Return (Hated the original, but my young cousin had the sequel and wanted to watch it with me. Utter crap)
The Little Mermaid II: Return To The Sea
The Return of Jafar
And
Aladdin And The King of Thieves

Unfortunately, out of that list The Rescuers Down Under is the only one that was really worth my time. I'm really interested in Lion King 1 1/2 as I've heard that it's really great and looks very interesting. I might rent that sometime soon.

Be Honest. Which animated sequels do you own? Also, which ones do you plan on buying in the future?

*ahem* Okay, here goes.

Sequels I own:
Lion King 1.5/3
Lion King 2
The Rescuers Down Under
Pocahontas 2
Aladdin and the Return of Jafar (my dog chewed up the VHS cover when she was teething)
Aladdin and the King of Thieves
The Little Mermaid 2
Atlantis: Milo Returns
The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2

My mother runs the local elementary school day care and so we buy most of the sequels for the kids... only to have the movies stay in our house during the summer.

The one sequel I actually claim to own (and enjoy) is Lion King 1.5/3

The next sequel I'm going to plan on purchasing is Bambi II. I'm hesitant on TENG II and Tarzan II -- I'll rent those.

I'm sensing a recurring theme here.

Have you considered trading or selling them to a store that buys pre-owned DVDs? My guess -- you could get $2-3 per title for these, either cash or store credit (depending on where you try to pawn them). Try CD Warehouse, GameStop, and Blockbuster -- those are places I frequently buy PO DVDs. CD Warehouse offers cash, the other two trade-in store credit only (but if you rent regularly at Blockbuster, it's useful).

I've rented most of Disney's animated sequels, and haven't been really impressed by any of them (some of them were outright stupid). Among those that I have bought or would actually buy for my collection:

- The Rescuers Down Under -- outstanding, and in some ways even more entertaining than the original.
- Aladdin and the King of Thieves -- primarily for the voice actors featurette, and because I'm a fan of John Rhys-Davies
- Return To Neverland -- because Corey Burton (voice of Hook) autographed it for me. And it's a pretty fair sequel, I thought.
- Lion King 2 -- very well done sequel. Proves that if Disney tried harder to make solid scripts and quality animation for their animated sequels, they would at least be more watchable.

My roommate bought Lion King 1.5 recently, but I haven't watched it yet.

I'll definitely rent "Kronk's New Groove" when it's released, if all the original cast returns. I loved the first movie, and if the sequel features Kronk... I'm all for "gettin' kronk'd".

I'll probably rent the Bambi sequel out of curiousity.

I own each and every Disney animated DTV or sequel !!!

First of all, I'd like to say that I think that The Rescuers Down Under has to be considered separately from the DTV or DTV-to-theaters sequels that Disney made starting with The Return of Jafar. The Rescuers Down Under was not only always intended to be a theatrical film, but it was actually thought of as one of the numbered Disney feature films and created by its main theatrical animation department.

That being said, I have to agree with Paka and DisneyFan 2000 even though I do confess to owning The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride.

When you watch the Disney documentaries and hear all the hype and fuss about the rich Disney tradition and its grand proud legacy, it becomes all the more ridiculous to think about how Disney has now disgressed to the point where it relies on (and has now junked all feature 2-D animation except) these low-budget sequels that are being made for no reason other than quick money.

Stories like The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Pocahontas simply should not have a sequel. The stories ended there and there is little to no dramatic necessity to force on more story.

Of course, films like Lilo and Stitch and The Lion King, I could potentially see successful sequels to. However, Disney needs to look around and realize that in a time where The Lord of the Rings, Spiderman, and countless other films have proven that well thoughtful and well-done sequels can and will outshine and outperform the original films, it really needed to put in more work into a sequel if it to make the big bucks and gain the critical acclaim it deserves.

Let's see....

I own:

The Return of Jafar I love it- almost more than the original Aladdin, a lot less than King of Thieves.
Aladdin and the King of Thieves This is my favorite Disney film ever, DTV or Feature, so I'm a bit biased. :)
Stitch: the Movie LOVE it.
Lion King: Simba's Pride ....Eh, it's alright.
Lion King 1.5 Fantastic.
Little Mermaid 2 Ugh.
Hunchback of Notre Dame 2 Ugh.
Zero to Hero I like the episodes included on it (especially Hercules and the Grim Avenger), so it's not bad.
Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas It's alright.

Ones I've seen but don't own:

Mulan 2 HATED this one.
Pocahontas 2 Bleh.
Cinderella 2 WHY????
Peter Pan 2 No opinion...just...bland.
Lady and the Tramp 2 Not too bad...

The one I'm dying for:
Stitch Has a Glitch I love the television series, so I'm drooling for this one.

It was also a "chepquel" - made on a much lower budget, in less time than usual and made mainly as a proof-of-concept of Disney's (then) new CAPS system. That's also why it was the first "sequel" - Disney wanted to put something out for a reasonably low cost to test the system, and still be able to get a decent return. Hey. presto - a sequel to one of their more popular films in recent times (especially overseas). There was no deep artistic reason for a Rescuers sequel. It just fitted in with their plans.

Oh and by using CAPS, Disney also managed to save money and lay off loads of inkers and colourists. In some respects, CAPS was the beginning of the end. And Roy approved that.

I still don't see what the issue is with these sequels. You'll all happliy watch the abolutely appaling Little Mermaid Animated series happily. And that's a series with so little originality it includes all of the popular music from the film in the opening 30 seconds! Same for the Aladdin animated series or Hercules etc.

Is it just because the sequels are, nominally, "films"? Really, its just in the eye of the beholder. Nobody actually thinks that they are replacing the Feature Animation films. They're just another way for people to visit with their favourite characters. Just like the animated TV series were.

You are probably right. But at least the film was used as a testing ground for new technology. I don't think that can be said of any of the recent DTV cheapquels. In addition, I have to at least credit them for making a sequel off of just about the only Disney animated feature that could support a sequel.

I'd just like to add that I do not at all like the The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, Tarzan, Lilo and Stitch etc animated series for the same reasons I don't like the cheapquels. :D

Again, you are right about this one. But coming from an institution with such a strong tradition and history, I would think that they ought to be held to a higher standard than the countless Land Before Time, Scooby Doo, and any pointless movie sequels
