There we go. Anyway, I think you're half right, that both are good for different audiences, but I think comparing is fine. We shouldn't say one is better than the other...except perhaps in technical terms, because really the animation in the anime version is nowhere as good as Disney's, and I don't mean in the design or the style, I mean the sea witch just keeps making the same poorly animated move back and forth when talking to Marina! Anyway...I think it's fine to compare everything, just not to say "this part is better than that", but instead say "this part is different from that in this way."

Hooray, my first thread that made the 2 pages point lol.

Prudence your $0.02 is always wanted! :D

Anyways yeah I suppose you can't really compare the two. But I guess since their both based on the same fairytale, then it's safe. Story wise, its safe. Most really animation or sound wise, since there 15 years apart and anime has a smaller budget, its un safe lol.

But like some of you said. I think it's easier to relate to Ariel then Marina, because Marina's character is almost paper thin. She doesnt exactly have a real strong motive as to why she wants to become human so bad. Marina is somewhat careless with her thoughts and emotions. Only until the end of the movie we really understand her situation. Thats not to say she's not a likeable character. Marina has a nice persoanlity and is enjoyable to watch her go through her storyline. Ariel is really well developed in a sense that she's a teenage with teenage angst. She has problems not fitting in and not having the best father/daughter relationships. Having always had an interest in the world above the sea, she finds more reason with prince Eric. So Ariel has stronger reasons in her choices.
But none is better then the other. I know a lot of people who prefer this version as opposed to Disney. I can see why in a lot of points. But both TLM's are pretty enjoyable. I think as long as the story is depicted in what the general idea is then any of them can be enjoyed. That is without analyzing it to the core heh.

Anyways thank you all for your responses! Im glad a lot of you enjoy this version as well.

Carry on. :D

Oh one more thing I really like about the two storys. Is that in some point of both movies the mermaid charcater is sitting on a rock in the same exact pose as the Little Mermaid Statue in Copenhagen, Denmark.
In the anime, After the Prince's marriage to the Princess of the Surmial Kingdom Marina is on the rock right before she calls Fritz. In Disney's version after the battle with Ursula, Ariel is on the rock looking towards prince Eric on the shore, but she's positioned the opposite direction. Both of them are in the same exact pose.
I can get a picture of the Disney one, and of the Statue in the Copenhagen Harbor. But Getting the Anime one is going to be harder.

SO, I've been wanting to do this for awhile, and so since I finally figured out how to take pictures of my entire desktop...now I can!

A while ago I wanted to make mention of the similarities to the Copenhagen statue in Denmark(read above post) and how these scenes are very similar. Do you think that the animators intentionally did this? Or it happend by coincidence??

The animators of Disney's said they intentionally did it on the DVD.

Fron the look of your comparison with the anime, it's a big duh that they also did it intentionally, to me.

Just a question-The Mermaid of the statue is a mermaid? or a human?.

Well we don't exactly know about the anime do we? Its possible, still the chance of coincidence is high.

Ariel's Prince I think the mermaid was sculpted to be in the middle of her transformation from mermaid to human.

Really? Is that your own conclusion or did you hear/read that? That's very interesting...and it looks like it could be true. That's super cool if it is.

It seems that way,it looks she has legs but they also looks like fins.
They should have made her a mermaid.
Edit:Just saw a bigger picture of the statue and she seems to have... two flippers,so she does seems in the middle of transforming:

I'm not sure actually, when I first saw the statue when I was a little kid, I thought she didn't look very mermaid like, since mermaids are usually joined in one fin from the waste down. But then I thought, well maybe shes in the middle of her transformation. Since thats what it looks like. It would be nice to ask the original sculpter, but he died long ago.

They did do a brief background on Denmark, where the statue is- I'm sure it was intentional.

Oh wow I didn't know this thread got bumped back up... LOL

I'll try and post a pic :) but she's boxed up somewhere so it might be awhile. I actually bought her on ebay. The seller didn't even know WTF it was. I've decided to try and buy the Region 2 DVDs. But even those are hard to find!!!

I did however find a torrent of a DVD rip of the anime movie, Japanese audio though. :)
