Congratulations to Disney and Pixar!

I hope both Cars and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest win in all of their catagories! They certainly deserve it.

Now, I'm sure someone will come along, and tell us how Cars doesn't deserve to win, but, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest does, but, that person wouldn't know what they are talking about.

It's supposed to, yes. Doesn't change the fact I'd like to see it before it potential wins for Best Short.

That's totally dependant on what it's competing against... both of which were either terrible or mediocre films. What's with only 3 films being nominated, though? Surely, there were more than 3 animated films made this year?

I'm saying that Cars is not only worthy of the nominations it received, but, it should also win in those catagories. I'm also pulling for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest to win in the catagories that it is nominated.

Both of these films deserve their nominations, and deserve to win. To me, it doesn't depend on what films they are up against.

I'll give Pirates 'Best Visual Effects' no arguments... I thought Poseiden's effects were terrible, and Superman Returns had good effects for a few select elements, and the rest was below-average. Whoever wins Art Direction will probably depend most on the personal tastes of the those voting.

But it's rather dififcult for non-professionals to properly judge Pirates merits over the other nominees in its remaining two categories... particularly from nothing to go with but the finished film. I'd need to listen to a lot of the raw pre- and post-edited and mixed sound elements for all the movies to say whether Pirates actually did a better job.

It should also be mentioned that Kevin O'Connell received his 19th nomination for Sound Mixing in Apocalypto. Dude has been nominated in the Sound catergories for working on such classics as Days of Thunder, Top Gun and both Spider-man films. He has NEVER won! 18 previous nominations and nothing! What's it gonna take to get this poor guy an Oscar??

On the whole, I probably like this year's picks more than last year's. I'm particularly happy that <i>Dreamgirls</i> and <i>The Departed</i> got so many, and especially Jennifer Hudson. Like most others, though, I'm upset that it didn't get a Best Picture nom. I also think it's kind of lame that J-Hud is getting Supporting credit in all these award shows. I felt that she was pretty clearly the lead (if there was one lead at all, that is). And of course -- not that I was expecting it -- but Johnny Depp should have been nominated for Best Actor.

If Disney is in fact distributing it, then I think it would count as #8. I'm sure they will be, but I guess it could be something that was lost in the contract negotiations. Do we have confirmation?

Only a few surprises here (no Dreamgirls nom as the biggest). But what troubles me the most is no DMC nom for costumes or make-up. However, when I think about it, I can see why make-up might not be the best thing for it to be nominated for. When I think of the good make-ups in the film, I then realise that they are CGI creations. But hey, Revenge of the Sith got the make-up nom last year under the same circumstances (it should have gotten VFX nom). Costumes I understand less why, but I'm glad it got the noms it did. I will be very upset if it doesn't win best VFX (Poseidon's were crap and Superman's were spotty).

Johnny Depp was never going to be nominated for Best Actor having already been nominated for the same role. It's sort of an unwritten law that "repeats" aren't nominated. Notice how Ian McKellen was only nominated once for Gandalf etc.

Of course, the Academy messed up that rule by letting Howard Shore win best Musical Score for Fellowship of the Ring and Return of the King (even though the latter score included a lot of the same themes); a blatant example of the Academy voting as a "crowd pleaser" rather than following through with their own tradition.

Ho hum, another Academy Awards round of nominations, and another example of the Academy voting in one of two ways: either for "worthy, you should watch this" films or crowd pleasing titles.

Are you really telling me that out of the hundreds of films released this year, titles like Blood Diamond, Bable and Apocalypto not only happen to be "worthy" but are also variously the best scripted, acted, edited, sound edited and scored. I don't think so. Once again, a selected few titles hog all the credit.

Tough luck if you happen to be the top of your game, but you only happen to edit Micheal Bay films, you'll never be recognised by your peers, even though, arguably, a fast paced action film is harder to edit.

I think, this year is the year I give up on the Oscars.

i gave up on the oscars a long time ago.and it has nothing to do with disney winning or losing. oscars r just a bunch of old people wanting to see their friends win, and wanting to set some odd world record like the first black, the first chinese, the first this the first that.and most actresses would get nominated or win because they appear nude which is the hardest thing to do in this world that includes their integrity and characterization.they also like to create records of longest nomination but never win and finally giving the person their due award after a long torture. thats oscar.

Question: I've read somewhere (can't remember where though) that because there were plenty of animated movies released in 2006, there would be 5 movies nominated instead of 3. What happened?

I'm really hoping for "The Little Matchgirl" to win but i think "Lifted" will.

I'm really hoping for "Cars" to win the Best Animated Feature but i think "Happy Feet" is gonna win.

I'm really hoping for "Cars" to win the Best Song but i think one of the "Dreamgirls" song will.

After not giving "Destino" the Oscar for Best Short I've lost my faith in the Academy...

I'm surprised Dreamgirls didn't get nominated for Best Pictures! It was a shock. Anyway, I hope Marie Antoinette wins Best Costumes. I saw that movie and the costumes were visually appealing. It deserves to win!

"Arthur and the Invincibles" turned out it had too much live-action for it to be counted, leaving us one short.

Yes, we all know 15 animated movies should be enough for 5 nominations, but it's how life works.

Well, Al Pacino got nominated twice for the same character in The Godfather trilogy. It was just for different categories(for the first he got the nomination for "Best Supporting Actor", in the second one he got it for "Best Actor").

As much as I agree Depp deserved a second nomination(not to mention, more nominations and Oscars for his work in the past), I'll be okay since "At World's End" is coming. I'm hoping they AT LEAST give Depp an Oscar for "Best Actor" simply because it's the last one of the trilogy, like they did with the horrible Return of the King. If they don't even give Depp a nomination next year, I'll be boycotting from even watching the Oscars for a long time.

Thanks for the info! So in order to have 5 nominees there must be 16 animated movies released per year, right?

I'd love to see "Little Match Girl" win the Oscar, and I hope for Marie Antoinette to win best costume. Those dresses were amazing!!
I guess PotC 2 will win best Special Effects, they deserve it.

I can not believe that V for Vendetta did not get a single nomination, but Babel gets nominated in a majority of the important nominations!? Ewwww, it was bad enough that Crash won, but now Babel has a chance at winning!?

I believe I posted this in the 2007 Golden Globes thread, but it fits here too.

Don't get me wrong, I loved The Devil Wears Prada, and the same goes for Meryl Streep. But I think she is getting way too much credit for this movie. Sure, she did a good job, as she always does. But the character of Miranda Priestly was pretty one-dimensional and probably could have been played by anyone. She did a good job, but I think she's getting more credit than she deserves.

Now how long do I have to sit in time-out for saying that?
