I didn't put this in Polls and Games, because I was hoping everyone would discuss their choices.

As for me,

1). "O Holy Night" - I just LOVE this song, and can't get enough of it. I even learned how to play it on the piano!

2). "Silver Bells" - For some reason, this song makes me happy.

3). "Carol of the Bells" - I LOVE the rythem and beat of this song, and it just sounds so pretty.

4). "All I Want For Christmas (Is You)" - Yes, I know this is overplayed and tacky. But I just can't stop listening to it!

5). " The Christmas Song" - I love the lyrics, and also love singing along to it!

I like Christmas songs for the most part, but they wear on my nerves when the renditions never differ.

My top five, taken from a list I wrote in Simba3's thread a couple years ago, with new explanations written:

"Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" - this has always been my favorite Christmas song, though in my high school yearbook (way back in 2003...god, five years...) I accidentally wrote "I'll Be Home For Christmas" in a section for favorite songs (and that's what got printed unfortunately). My favorite rendition is easily the Carpenters version that's on Christmas Portrait, along with the Kenny G instrumental, a 2004 version by Tyler Hilton, and of course, the original Judy Garland version from 1944's Meet Me in St. Louis (a movie I still have yet to get on DVD). Most others are generally okay, with little complaints from me. If I had to pick the worst versions I've heard, that easily goes to Disney's manufactured teenyboppers: the Cheetah Girls and Demi Lovato. The Cheetah Girls sound horrible no matter what they're "singing", and the Demi Lovato version just sounds like a pale imitation of Christina Aguilera's version from 2000. None of these girls understand the importance of the song's lyrics, the emotions behind the words. Instead they try to sing it in a diva-like tone, and it just ruins it.

"Merry Christmas, Darling" - a wonderful Christmas song that definitely stems from the romantic in me. It's got everything a perfect love song needs: pitch-perfect lilting vocals, backgrounds that don't interfere with the lead, a nice interlude on the sax, lyrics that listeners can relate to and can react to, and an actual end to the song. And there's only one version of the song that gets it all right, and that's the Carpenters version. There aren't many covers of this song (that I've found), which I'm partially glad for, but at the same time, I'd love to hear a real artist add their own personal flair to the song.

"Christmas Canon in D" - Trans-Siberian Orchestra. I just love it, even though I'm not usually fond of children's choirs. Can't really say much else about this.

"O Holy Night" - one of the few Christmas songs that, if effectively sung by the singer, will bring me to tears.

"Santa Baby" - a guilty pleasure if ever there was one. Stick with Eartha Kitt's, nothing else can compare.

And my bottom five:

"All I Want For Christmas Is You" - ugh. My least-favorite Christmas song ever.

"Christmas Shoes" - somewhat-good movie, schloppy song, glurgy lyrics, depressing mood all around. It just feels so goddamn pretentious even though I'm sure they didn't intend it to. And why the hell would Jesus care what kind of shoes you wear?

"Carol of the Bells" - thanks a lot, Home Alone, for making me always associate this song with the message "Have a Merry Christmas or we'll kill you in your sleep!!!" And even if Home Alone didn't influence my dislike of this song, I would still think of it as a very ugly song to listen to.

"Jingle Bell Rock" - I don't know when/why I started hating this song. I think because of its cheesiness and stupidity.

"It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" - a new addition, as I've recently realized that I hate hearing this song on the radio and often switch to another station when it comes on. Probably because 97.5 seems to play it every 20 minutes. Damn you, Perry Como.

My favorite Christmas songs is 'Silent Night/The 7 O'Clock News' by Simon & Garfunkel. Paul and Art are singing "Silent Night" while a television newscast is being heard in the background, the volume being turned up gradually, until it pushes out the'"Silent Night" part. I think it's a powerful criticism of the hypocrisy of "peace on earth".
