Squirrel wrote:I got it for 20 dollars at Borders Bookstore (yesteday morning; they said I was the first one to purchase it, but I was also the first one there, basically. LOL.) It is a beautiful film. The best of Pixar, I think, and the best 3D film yet...
The musical score is lovely, and I hope Thomas Newman finally wins the Academy Award for this one (and I predict he will). The cinematography, though there was no camera, so to speak, was so good...along with the sound editing and all other technical aspects.
(Personally, I find this film is much easier to appreciate and be in awe of, on a technical, visual level, than it is to love. It's slick, but lacks something untouchable and organic. But that's just me...)
My favorite moments: the Field Trip bit, where they skirt over the reef, and Nemo goes, "Whoa," and the piano fills the background as Mr. Ray swerves over the seaweed and sends the fish scattering. Marvelous. The jellyfish forest. The surfing turtles.
Thomas Newman did a fantastic job with the score as you mentioned.
I'm a pretty big score buff actually.
Thomas Newman provided some really good scores for The GReen Mile and Shawshank Redemption as well. Not sure right off the bat what other family films he's done.
I also love Randy Newman's scores for James and the Giant Peach and the other Pixar films.
And the not quite as popular but just as great David Newman who scored The Brave Little Toaster. Why in the world isn't there a soundtrack available for that!??! Those songs are so memorable and the score is heart felt.

Which one of them did Toy Story? It probably would have been good if that Newman hadn't sung also in that movie.

Well, here's my 2-cents about what I thought about the finding nemo dvd.
First off, I am a little embarassed to say... I never saw finding nemo before tuesday when I bought the dvd

But, man, was I blown away!!! The movie and plot itself were wonderful and the ocean graphics and all the animation were out of this world.
I personally liked the making of nemo extra. I showed how much work they put into detail, especially trying to get the correct lighting for the ocean.
I was also a big fan of the visual commentary... especially the "mine" international, love it!!

I personally, think that they should have kept the deleted scene of nemo asking about his mother. I thought it was quite touching and would have been great in the movie.
I haven't watched much of the second disc yet, all I've watched is the knick knack feature. It was cute and all, but it's not something I'd continuously watch over and over again.
So those are my thoughts, feel free to disagree if you want, but I loved this movie !!!!

I wholeheartedly disagree. Love the three songs he sang for the original Toy Story, and I find the music in Toy Story 2 noticeably weaker, since he only wrote/composed and didn't sing.

As I read this my daughter is watching
Toy Story on The Disney Channel and Randy Newman is right in the middle of "Strange Things are Happening" ... indeed

And for the record I love the songs he has done for Disney/Pixar films.

I'm not sure I buy his arguments for a 'rush release'. This certainly sounds like the worse Pixar set to date. Have to see, got mine this morning.

I have to say that this IS the worst Pixar DVD release to date. But their worst effort is still an extremely enjoyable collection and some studios could only dream of doing a below average job in this manner

Really good interview - thanks for posting. I have trouble labeling Nemo "worst" anything, because it's a totally fine DVD. But yes, it would have benefitted from more extras - the total amount of extra content is certainly the lightest since A Bug's Life, and that had a bunch of cool audio tracks too.
I really feel the documentary could have been extended another half-hour easily. After all, the documentary guy was there overseeing the whole production, and the 25 minutes that are there are very interesting, but some interesting points are merely alluded to.
There's also some basic things that should have been included - the hidden features thing that aired on Disney Channel, additional "Fishy Facts", TV spots (c'mon, no Blondie music anywhere?

)...overall, I'd still give it a high grade, just not as high as MI or the UTB. The movie is really sweet and the A/V are perfect, so they've got that going for it.

Having seen the movie, I have to say I don't think it was all that great. Not worthy of being the "highest grossing animation of all-time" anyhow. I would say this is perhaps Pixar's worst film (not that that makes it bad).
As Disney father and son movies go I prefer A Goofy Movie (but not the abomination that is An Extremely Goofy Movie!).
As for the DVD, I hate how they put the links to Exploring the Reef and Knick Knack on the main menu page. Do they think people don't even have the brainpower or energy to click on Special Features now? I see they have no similar concerns about forcing their trailers on viewer.

The bass on this movie was INCREDIBLE! In the whale scene the bass went well below human hearing; you could feel the slow vibrations. In the scene where she taps on the glass, jeez something fell off my wall - simply amazing. Beats Lord of the Rings for best bass in a recent movie. Someone blew their center channel with this movie at avsforum :O

I picked it up yesterday at Best Buy.
(those McDonalds dollars come in handy)
Its a great movie.
But hardly the best animated feature ever.
Not even Pixar's best.

I agree. When I first saw it in the theaters I thought it was an excellent film but ranked it as Pixar's 4th best (out of 5). After repeated viewings that hasn't changed. I love it, but still think it's #4.

Very good find, especially if you are a slipcover fan. Enjoy your DVD, this is one of Pixar's finest films.

I happen to agree. I've had some *cough* copies for a while now, but it's nice to own the official DVD.
