Lilo & Stitch had a genius advertising campaign. (Stitch invading Disney classics; there's one in every family.) And it's been the most successful of the modern 2D bunch (of the current decade). Brother Bear looks to be second in that regard (well ahead of Treasure Planet; and ahead of New Groove). Lilo finished with 145 domestic. I think Brother Bear will also cross 100 million, and in the current climate, and with Nov/Dec being heavy movie months, I think that's pretty good.
The advertising for Lilo and Bear was good, creative (as for Bear, the "If you only see one movie this year..." and other skits). The advertising for Treasure Planet and New Groove was not (and Atlantis). And, for whatever reason, the two successful ones come from Orlando. The others from Burbank, right?
But Lilo and Bear had appealing characters that could be showcased in trailers/ads, in Stitch, Lilo, Koda, the moose, et cetera. The others...not so much.
