my copy was bought on friday so i did contribute to the numbers i wonder if they'll get the hint that gift sets are a big loss to them. they would have sold VERY well. i cant wait til their kicking themselves in the butt after holidays for having such a huge dvd and no outlet for pricy purchases. $20-$25 a piece definetly does add up, but a $49.99 item would also have brought a lot of success.

Anyone else thinks that had the film been available on VHS as well or even had a gift-set, the numbers would have been *EVEN* higher?
It just doesn't cease to annoy me that all other Platinums had the advantage of being available both on DVD and VHS and Mermaid didn't. The top selling VHS of the year sells about 1.5-2 million units, I think, so Mermaid could have sold another 0.2-0.5 million.

OK, enough already. 4 Million DVDs is beyond amazing. Sheesh.

Sorry Simba, but I'm almost positive that by the end of the year, a little mermaid will have outsold your horribly menued set!

So im curiouse to know does anybody have any specific favorite scene or moment in TLM? Of Course I like every scene in the entire movie, but my all time favorite moment is when Ariel is diving to Prince Erics ship. I dunno why I like the music and the colors an the fireworks and the image of a mermaid diving towards a ship to see whats going on over there.

Well, I like every scene in the movie as well but my favorite? Hmm well there a few scenes I like the most:

Main Titles - it's the directors' way of introducing us to the underwater world and I think they did it fantastically. The drawings look very realistic, as if you can touch one of the corals. The scene builds up to the part where the castle in unveild; a truly breathtaking visual and very imaginative indeed.

Scuttle - the whole scene where Scuttle is rattling about human stuff is just engaging... I never get tired of his farce (a classic Disney moment) and I like the setting, it always makes me wanna go sailing

The Storm - to me, this is one of the most exquisitely executed scenes in Disney's history. The special effects, the dark colors, and the overall realistic and dramatic nature of this scene make it one of the most memorable as well.

Ursula's Wrath - I like it how Ursula turns gigantic and they're on her crown not realizing what'd happened. Then there's another magnificently done storm. I like the aquatic colors against the lavender/pink backdrop. Also, Urusula's dispatching is absolutely brilliant and original. Instead of making a predictable ending where Ariel or Eric get hold of the trident and turn her to magic dust, Eric scrambles onto the ship and stabs her to death with that mast.

3. Poor Unfortunate Souls- Ursula is just hillarious! She is such a gifted actress! Plus, the song really advances the plot.

4. Tour of the Kingdom- this is a very happy moment in the film. Ariel is very happy in this scene. If Ariel's happy, I'm happy.

5. Main Titles- breathtaking visuals. The score is just so beautiful.

Favorite scenes:

Ariel when she's checking out her legs and feet, and all that scene up to when she goes off with Eric. The animation is just so gorgeous, and she is just... perfection! Aside from not having her gorgeous voice there...

When she sings Part of That World in her grotto. Magical moment.

The scene when she is going to bed in the pink nightgown. That's one of the coziest, snuggly-wuggliest scenes on film.

I don't know if VHS sales would have contributed much more to it's first week sales. I think I read that total VHS sales for some of the Platinums have been between .25 and .50 million copies for it's whole run, not just initial release. I also don't know how many more physical copies they would have sold by making a gift set, but they certainly would have gotten more money. My desire for a gift set lead me to purchase the overpriced DVD + pin set at Best Buy. Although, I always pre-order through the disneyshopping.com for their giveaways and they never give them with the gift sets, so in the past I have bought the standalone release through disney and gone to Best Buy to get the box set, so they would have made a little extra money off me, but I don't know how many other people do that. I do think a gift set would have sold well for this filme though, given it's huge popularity. I'm assuming the set made for "The Lion King" sold well because it spawned 2 more, but does anyone know how poorly (or well) the sets solf for "Aladdin" and "Cinderella?" I can still find "Cinderella" sets at my local Best Buy, but "Aladdin" is nowhere to be found these days, even though it is still in print and easy to find.

It would be stating the obvious if I said that it's hard to choose. Still, I guess I could mention a couple of the places where I get goosebumbs -- of the good kind

The Wedding of Vanessa and Eric - I don't know, this scene in particular just stands out to me. The whole deal with the animals working together and fighting with Vanessa/Ursula is hilarious! And the mood changes so dramatically when the sun sets and Ariel is kidnapped by Ursula. Amazing.

Main Titles - like many others, I love this part. When the ship emerges from the mist, the fish escapes, the first time we see the castle... it's all just magical.

The Trip to the City + "Kiss the Girl" -- I now it's a bit of a long clip but I just love it. The music that plays while they dance, drive around, etc. is wonderful and Kiss The Girl..well, you all know how it goes What TLM is all about is captured perfectly here, IMO.

2. Part of your world: "..Warm on the sand... "and she spreads her hair on the ground. And the little shrug at the end od Part of your world, right after "...wish I could be...".

4. King Triton gives her her legs
5. "I love you Daddy" It makes me so happy I could cry every time.

The DVD is amazing! I just got it a few days ago. I wish they had a bit more on the animators & the voice actors, though.

The Little Matchgirl is a fantastic short, but I wish that there was some "behind the scenes" or "making of" feature for it. It kinda deserves it.

Overall: Great DVD! I give it a 8/10.

my favourite scene is minute 1 to minute 75 lol. i love every single moment.

Don't be silly. Making Of's are only made for Disney Channel Circle of Stars music videos.

Good to hear the DVDs selling well. Maybe now Disney will listen and start making better DVDs.

Yet another article from Home Media Retailing, reporting about the huge sales, "Mermaid" debuting at the runner-up spot of the DVD chart and the fact that the films' availablity as digital downloads (through Apple and such) did not affect DVD sales. Are people even aware that it's available for download? And why would anyone agree to pay $13 and not have a proper case with inserts?

1. Poor Unfortunate Souls- such and awesome villain song. And, as has been stated, it advances the plot a lot.

2. The entire sequence from when Ursula turns turns into Vanessa until after Ursula dies- just an amazing climax. It never gets old.

Part of your world reprise has always been my favorite. But I think the best impact of the new transfer has been in poor unfortunate souls, it seems more vivid to me. I still haven't gotten around to listening to the commentary, which is surprising because that is what I was looking forward to the most.

I totally agree with you. Poor Unfortunate Souls is a really good villain song, I love it. All the parts including Ursula tend to be my favorites. It's kinda creepy on the boat when she turns back into Ursula and starts 'crawling' down the boat to grab Ariel ... but it's very cool too. lord-of-sith I think I have heard you say before, and I MUST agree, the villains always steal the show!!
