Absolutely. Beauty and the Beast was incredible. Brought my wife for Valentine's Day. The dance hall scene was just mindblowingly good in IMAX. I don't think there is anything like that in Mermaid but still would like to see it. Lion King never came here in IMAX.

As much as I LOVE the IMAX, I voted no.

Not that I have anything against the film(though I do think it's overrated), there just isn't any particular scene that would work perfectly for the IMAX.

I mean like Mr. Toad mentioned, BATB had the Ballroom scene which is incredible to watch anywhere, and the theater would probably make the dark tone of the film come to life. The Lion King had those larger-than-life songs and a incredible fight scene at the end and a stampede scene which I can imagine would adapt incredibly at the IMAX. I can even think of certain scenes from Aladdin would adapt well at an IMAX.

There's nothing really IMAX worthy in The Little Mermaid IMO. Maybe the Ursula scenes, but aside from that, it lacks the drama which works so well at the IMAX.

It would be great to be in IMAX theatres. But unfortunately we don't have IMAX here in South Florida, and I don't feel like going 2 hours to Orlando.

Obviously, yes, I would really, really love Mermaid in I-MAX. Some people have brought up good points about the scenes not transfering as well to I-MAX as BatB or TLK, but I'm sure Disney knows how much moola they could rake in..

Actually, I dont think Beauty and the Beast or the Lion King met expectations at IMAX, which is why they did not release Tarzan. I know both IMAXs in Vancouver did not bring in the Lion King because they were not pleased with the performance of Beauty and the Beast.

I think the problems are:

1) IMAX tickets are expensive, compared to a "normal" theater.
2) There aren't enough IMAX theaters yet. I had to travel 7 hrs to see Beauty and the Beast. I mean, a family that isn't a "Disney Fanattic" family wouldn't travel that far to see it.

Ive been hearing in a bunch of websites that they might do it again with The Little Mermaid. I REALLY hope they do cause Ive never seen it in theatres and its my favorite movie... was just wondering what you guys think...

Well, I wouldn't be too optimistic about The Little Mermaid coming to IMAX theatres. They quit putting the Disney films in the IMAX theatres because they weren't successful enough. If there was any decent piece of evidence that Mermaid was coming to IMAX theatres it probably would have been announced here already. This website is always the first place for news on upcoming releases. Luke has a list of upcoming DVDs and films coming to theatres on the home page.

I would love to see The Little Mermaid in theatres again. I really enjoyed it back in '89. The climax was quite intense on the big screen. At least for a 9 year old.

No, I did not see it in theatres, seeing I was 3 months and 6 days old at the date of initial release.

Yes, I saw it 3 times during its original theatrical release here in Holland (1990). I was 6 years old, and it still is my all time favorite Disney movie.

Wasn't born when it originally came out, but caught it in the re-release in 1997.

I didn't know it had a re-release.

I saw it twice in 1989 when I was 4, and once in 1997 during the rerelease when I was 12.

I really, really miss Disney doing theatrical rereleases...I hope the new leadership may revive that.

I heard that both The Little Mermaid and Aladdin had been prepared for IMAX releases, but Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King didn't make enough money for them to think it would be worth going ahead with any more IMAX reissues...though why they didn't just do a wide rerelease, not just at IMAX theatres, is beyond me.

The Little Mermaid is a Disney Classic and it's a must own even if it's a girls movie.

I also didn't see it in 1989, I wasn't born, nor did I know that it was theatrically rereleased in 1997, so the only thing that I could see The Little Mermaid on was my VHS copy.

I don't think Snow White was in IMAX theaters. I don't know how it could considering its aspect ratio and I don't know why anyone would go and see it on an enormous screen anyway. For a kid, the witch is already frightening enough on a television screen. My goodness, imagine the transformation seen and her reveal ("The perfect disguise!") on a huge screen! I'd probably run out screaming!

lol, sorry to get off topic, but No, I haven't seen it in theaters either times. My family didn't really go to the movies when we were kids. I thought we would after seeing Aladdin about 5 times at the theater. We saw that, Lion King and Mulan, and thats it. It was always a real treat to see a movie in theaters since it was a rare occurence for us as kids.

Its aspect ratio is actually closer to the native IMAX aspect ratio, which is something like 1.43:1 for 70MM works and supposedly 1.33:1 for others. But, yeah it would not look so great blown up that large without tinkering, something that we can all agree would be blasphemous on <i>Snow White</i>. And you're right it didn't go to IMAX theaters. Its last re-release, in 1993, was like previous releases, in standard 35 mm exhibitions.

As far as animated Disney movies being shown in IMAX theaters, I believe there was just <i>Fantasia 2000</i>, <i>Beauty and the Beast</i>, <i>The Lion King</i>, and (perhaps) <i>Treasure Planet</i>.
