Seven of the eight major movie studios have announced that they will release movies in the Blu-ray Disc format as soon as hardware becomes available. The movies will feature high definition video and audio as well as advanced interactive features. Compared to standard definition (SD), which is the resolution used for today's TVs and DVDs, high definition (HD) offers a big improvement. A standard TV uses either NTSC which is 480i (640x480) or PAL/SECAM which is 576i (720x576). The "i" stands for interlaced, which means that only half of the lines are updated for each frame alternating between the odd and even lines. Blu-ray movies will be in 1080p (1920x1080), which is the highest of the HD resolutions. The "p" stands for progressive, which means that every line and pixel will be updated for each frame.

Does anyone know if Criterion has picked a side in the HD format war yet? I wish there were some launch titles from them... from that list they could've done the Armegeddon Blu-Ray instead of Disney; their DVD edition was great. Not to mention Robocop.

I'm thinking that we will still have DVD releases. I think its talking about exclusives between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, meaning no HD-DVD releases of these movies.

Unless something changes I don't see DVDs completely phased out by 2008.

Monsieour already answered that in post #16 on this thread. Besides, Disney has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Blu-ray Disc Association since 2004 and is not releasing in hd-dud at all, and is releasing Blu-rays starting in 2006, so reading the phrase "Blu-ray exclusive after 2008" as meaning "We're only doing Blu-rays and not hd-duds after 2008" makes NO SENSE.

I'm wondering what Disney will do to mark the 70th Anniversary of the first release date of
Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs
in 2007 - are there plans afoot to produce a new High Definition transfer a la Warner Bros latest version of The Wizard Of Oz, which pulled out all the stops picture and audio wise?

Or is Disney holding off until all the releases in their Platinum DVD series are out and waiting until the 75th Anniversary of it's first animated classic?

According to the Disney UK website Snow White is due to be released again in 2008.

And according to MonsieurJackSkellington, first post <a href="http://www.ultimatedisney.com/forum/vie ... 3">here</a>; the Oct 2008 edition will be Blu-Ray so it should therefore be in High Definition.

Whether or not they'll add any more content is another matter...

this really sucks... all the money we've spent in the past years on dvd's just to have to spend it alllllllll over again. the only disney DVD's I plan to get on Blu-ray will be Snow White, Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast (cause I missed them the first time around) and my 2 favortie Disney Movies (The Little Mermaid and Aladdin). other than that... I think Ill be happy keeping my normal DVDs.

what if you had bought all the VHS releases prior to DVD?

C'mon now...is it really ALL that bad? We're all here because we're collectors, and even though we gripe about "double dipping" and re-releasing newer versions of movies after a moratorium, it's obviously still working for Disney, as the new versions keep selling. This practice has been in place since VHS, and continued with DVD (Limited Issue releases followed by Gold Collection, Special Edition or Platinum Collection releases). Why would we assume that DVD was the be-all-to-end all and the discs we have now would be the final time they were released? There's always going to be a new format with better resolution and features (although, with 60 and 70 year old cartoons, I'd be hard pressed to find out how much more they could squeeze out of them after Blu-Ray), and Blu-Ray is the next up. And, holding to form, I bet that most of us will be in line for the new format releases (so long as the players aren't prohibitively expensive).

I don't mind having to buy my collection over again every 8-10 years or so. Technology is constantly changing, this is just a fact we're going to have to accept. I had almost the whole collection in VHS....I sold them all on e-bay, and got a little back from that. The new versions of DVD's (yes I buy all of them, even if I already have the DVD) I either keep the old version if I like it or sell it on e-bay and make a little back.

I already have a portion of every paycheck designated to "DVD buying". I can't wait to re-buy the collection in Blu-Ray!

Anyway...pretty soon all TV's are going to have to be HD to receive a television signal at all. So it only makes sense they're moving to Blu-Ray exclusive because everyone will have an HDTV, or at least the converter anyway.
