I'm a Netflix member, I have the 4 DVDs at a time, unlimited. I live in Hawaii, and there's a local distribution center here. You may want to check chats or forums to see if there's a distribution center near you. If not, DVDs will take longer to arrive.
I go though about 20 DVDs a month, more when I'm sick or when I take vacation. Basically, I watch the DVD the night I get it, and stick it in the main the next day. If I drop it off in the morning, Netflix usually gets it by that evening or early the next morning and sends out the next DVD. It arrives the next day.
There have been times when the DVDs take a week to arrive, but it's usually when I rent more obscure titles. When I put new releases at the top of my queue, if I time it just right, they ship the new release the day BEFORE the release date so it arrives on it's official street date. Better than going to Blockbuster.
Which plan did you pick? You may want to figure out about how many you'll be watching and divide that amount into the price you're paying. From there you can decide which plan is best for you. I use four at a time so I always have at least one, while the others are in the mail. My mom and I share our account so sometime (not always) not all four DVDs are for me.

I heard a news report the other day about them catering towards new members and the old members get new releases last

That's a severe simplification and every online rental "X out at a time" program has similar terms in their agreements. If they didn't, anyone could take advantage of the system and single-handedly impact profitability. There are people online who brag about renting hundreds of DVDs to burn copies of them rather than watch them right away. Netflix obviously isn't designed to cater to someone like this.

I have been a Netflix member for years - right now I'm on their 5-out-at-a-time plan.

It's true - it takes me a LONG time to get the new releases. I still haven't gotten Flightplan - I had to go rent it yesterday from my local Blockbuster.
It's frustrating. I used to get them the day they came out.

Right now, the first 20 DVD's in my queue have "Really Long Wait" listed next to them. :( It doesn't seem really fair to me - they should be loyal to their long-time customers.

been seeing commercials about Netflix vs Blockbuster DVD's .. Netflix takes longer when you send them back by mail. but has this in-store option trade thing. which do you prefer?

Well I think the Blockbuster deal is better, but there isn't one in my area so I'm still with Netflix.

Don't use either, if I ever rent which is about once a year, I just down the corner to Hollywood Video. I am not too lazy to go get my rentals. Why pay so much for an in-mail service that, if they should ever get stolen from your mailbox or your home, you are liable for.

I've been with blockbuster for about a year and a half, and really enjoy it.

~with blockbuster you just fill out a simple form saying you lost it or it never came, and they will send the next movie.

I've been a happy Netflix customer for five months and am satisfied with their title selections, price, and service. My experience with Blockbuster only stretches to their brick-and-mortar stores (which I was never satisfied with), so I can't comment about their web-based services. Hacking Netflix taught me a lot about the online movie rental biz when I was trying to decide if I should take the plunge.

dvdjunkie, if a movie gets stolen or lost in the mail, Netflix will not hold you liable unless it happens too frequently. Fortunately, every movie in my queue has arrived safe and sound.

I'm all Movie Gallery, but have been seriously considering Netflix as of late. Rarely bother with Lackluster Video, as I once heard it being called. ;)

I was sort of raised in an anti-Blockbuster family. My dad and my mom always took me to local stores. So yeah, I'm not even going to bother with Blockbuster.

I've had the 3-at-a-time Netflix plan since July, and I adore it. Before that, I used to rent DVDs and videos every weekend, and it cost quite a bit... Not only do I save time and about half on video rentals, but I can also keep track of what movies I want to watch (my queue is over 200 right now): whenever I went to local stores I had to bring a list with me or else I would forget what movies I wanted to rent. But I still do go to this one store whenever I want to rent a movie that hasn't been released on DVD (they have a HUGE selection of videos, many of them being well over 20 years old).

There aren't really any downsides to Netflix that I can think of... They were supposed to send me Scrooged in late December, but apparently it was lost in the mail. Fortunately, that's only happened to me once. My mailbox requires a key so if it was stolen, it was probably someone in the postal service.

Looks like there's already a topic on Netflix:

you're not liable if stolen from your mailbox. the post office lost my disc and i called netflix and they sent me another copy free of charge. and i only pay $9.99 a month for unlimited movies i get my movies really fast since my distribution center is in denver which im only 2 hours away from so it works for me. i don't have blockbuster here either but i've worked for them and i would never give them my money! lol :D

What's in Your Top Ten?

I do too! There's got to be more than just a couple of us. I think netflix is the best thing since sliced bread. I always receive my discs when they say I will, and when they come from my local distribution center, I get them the next day. I have the 2 disc plan, but I'm thinking of upgrading to the 3 discs.

What's in your queue's top 10? Mine are:

01. Facts of Life season 1 & 2: Disc 3
02. Facts of Life season 1 & 2: Disc 4
03. The Pursuit of Happyness
04. The Gnome Mobile
05. My Dog The Thief
06-08. The Facts of Life season 3
09-10- McHale's Navy Season 1

They really have a good collection of Disney movies, including alot of classics. They even have a few of the Treasures.

I only had one problem with my discs, and it wasn't even their fault. When the weather was really cold, my discs kept breaking, because my mailbox is outside. After the second disc in a row arrived broken, I called Netflix and talked to a customer rep. They apologized, and released 2 more discs in my queue plus a replacement disc, because I had been paying for 2 weeks of service that I had not received any discs- and they all arrived in one piece! They handled it very well. I highly recommend Netflix!

Nah! I stay away from on-line stuff like this. I am not too lazy to go down to my local Hollywood Video or Blockbuster to pick up a rental. Besides I probably rent less than five titles a year. I buy most of the movies that I want to see.

I do. It's not a question of being lazy, it's that I lack a good video store (one that's close and has the sometimes semi-obscure stuff I want that I can't find at Blockbuster/Hollywood Video). As such, Netflix is my buddy, as it is for many of my friends at school. I just got "The Prestige" on Monday, and I loved it.

It's not a matter of laziness, I agree with you SpringHeelJack- I also lack a decent video store. We have a Blockbuster and a Hastings, but all they have is the everyday stuff that anybody has- usually crap.

The reason why I decided to join, is because they have a better selection than any video store I could ever possibly find, and it marks off one place I have to go to in my daily, single parent life- I'm definitely NOT lazy! :)

My first choice is Hollywood then Blockbuster. I have seen way to many netflix rentals delivered to the wrong place
