Just in case you were refering to me MMP, I didn't mean that ALL animation should be anime like.

However, animators today should spend more time in characters' designs and offer something really good to look at, and not take the easy way road... I mean, take a look at how much effort was put into this:

I know that Ed, Edd and Eddy is horrible drawn but some cartoons are drawn that way because they have short budget or just don't know how to draw.

In all honesty I think you'd be surprised at just how much effort actually DID go into that. I bet the number of meetings held to finalize that design and the number of draft designs and re drafts that were thrown out wouild surprise us all!

Oh yeah.... I bet there was. Like for example the meeting they had when they decided to create..., I don't know: Ursula or the lions in TLK (have you heard the commentaries on that? When the animators had to put so much effort into giving them personalities becuase they didn't have hands to work with, and on top of that still mantain the characters like animals and not humans).


Or Tom and Jerry... this is a cartoon of the 50's. And just look at how fluid and still good looking the series are.

Or in the 90's with series like : Batman, SWAT Katz...


So yes, I'm pretty sure they had it very hard when they came up of the idea for that character and how to animate it as opposed to these other ones...

lets analyse this:

we all know Mickey mouse and all Disney-related stuff, we all know the famous D, the mouse`s ears hat and shadows. this has becomed an icon for us who whenever we se them we think right away "Disney"

Making simple images, that are easy to remember for all make this cartoons and theirs stuff pretty easy to recognize, what suggest that the fans of this cartoons(not always childrens,but mostly) will be more attracted to their stuff.
Besides, the circular forms on the character make it more "attractive to watch" than a character with angles or contrasting lines, and the blue color provoques calm and tranquility to the viewer.

Sometimes its only a design, others, a realy smart move that involves not only cartoons but psycology, market research and many more.

the character's in Foster's Home are imaginary friends as is implied in the title. therefore they don't need to have an extrordinary design. It's from the imagination of an individual child or more so the imagination of the creator of this character. i don't see how anyone can critisize someone's design for a character in this sort of way. this is all someones design and someone's image that they wanted to interpret. and i feel that under the sicumstances that they are given that these animators come up with some great stuff. To me this is like comaring classical music to rock music. they are two completely different things from two completely different times so therefore it's impossible to say one is better than the other.

I don't have anything specific against that particular series. The problem comes when almost every cartoon made today look the same simplistic way.

Its the way the show is..

Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends...Is funny and imagitive..there all all these weird shapes and designs so the show fits perfectly with the animation cause they look all weird...I bet half of the people wouldnt like fosters if they animation was like batman the animated series...so many ppl like the show because of the designs and they do really good with that. Same goes for Fairly Odd Parents.

In my opinion cartoons today are lame, period. Mostly because they're cheesy and poorly written. I like the older, smarter ones.

Actually the only cartoons I watch are Looney Tunes, old Disney shorts, and the one specifically for adults, South Park. SpongeBob is another one I occasionally watch.

Yeah I don't have anything against it just as long as the story is good and it's in good taste. I mean I watch South Park, which is the worst animation I've ever seen yet their plots are entertaining and it complies with my tastes. So I'm going to watch it. If I can find Animaniacs on TV I would watch that all the time because of the same reasons except that the animation is good.

I certainly agree on some UD'ers on this thread.

In fact, I hate Ed, Edd, and Eddy because of too much gags that could destroy younger audience's minds. And Ed is the worst character in that show. He's so dumb!! Ugh...if only the creator decides to cancel the show, I'll be very happy.

As for the other cartoons, I didn't have any interest to watch those (except Spongebob Squarepants, which the show is hillarious, and older cartoons from the late 30's to early 90's!). It bores me and made me fell asleep on a couch.

Since no one's really defended Camp Lazlo, it's created by the person who created Rocko's Modern Life, if that tells you anything. It's a funny show, and I think it deserves more credit.

The shows you mentioned are basically just stylized, same with Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends (which I think is awesome). The Fairly Odd Parents looks good, too. If anything, shows on the Disney Channel have horrible animation. Maybe not Kimpossible, but The Buzz on Maggie, American Dragon: Jake Long, Brandy and Mr. Whiskers...

Oh yeah! Rocko's Modern Life is hillarious!

I didn't even knew he created that show too (I just knew that the artwork being so familiar to Rocko's Modern Life). I'll try to watch Camp Lazlo and see how it goes.

I watched Camp Lazlo because I heard it was created by Joe Murray (the guy who made Rocco) and I thought it would be funny...I was really dissapointed..the chracters werent funny and the stories werent that good or funny.

I will give it another chance soon tho

Madame Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends happens to be one of the best animated series on television right now, outside of the obviously adult-minded Fox/Adult Swim/Comedy Central cartoons. You actually have to watch the show and UNDERSTAND the characters to really appreciate their designs. The show is quite literally breathtakingly beautiful and apparantly professionals in the industry think so too: it led this year's television Annie nominations. There's more to animated series than the animation. The writing, in my opinion, is the first and foremost indicator of a good series. The writing in this show, as well as The Fairly Odd Parents and others deemed "ugly" animation, is impeccable. Animation does not have to be complex to be good. That's just a very silly notion to even have.
