One question, though. How are they going to put an HDTV-version on a normal-definition DVD?
A lot of DVD transfers in the last couple years began as HD transers (for future, HD format releases), then downconverted for a special edition DVD. Most of Criterion's titles are like this, for example, since they're preparing for the next generation. Or maybe the article just said "DVD" out of habit, and the movie's actually getting an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray release; we'll have to wait and see.

However, I'd rather Mr. Bluth get to work on a proper release for The Land Before Time. The current DVD is garbage.

Great news! Love this movie!
I also think that every Don Bluth animated feature should be rereleased and maybe be launched as "The Don Bluth Collection" or something.

Now only if they could do this with my beloved "Thumbelina" and "A Troll in Central Park". Those are my favorites of the Bluth's films, and their current DVD releases are pretty crappy. I'd much rather see proper special editions for these two amazing films.

16x9? True.
1.85 Version? True
Full Screen Version? True

Not as true as I'd hoped. Then again, I'm watching it on my laptop where those kind of flaws are more apparent than on a standard television.
Don Bluth wrote:We are doing a producer/director's commentary and on camera interviews for the "extras"
True, though the on-camera interviews are edited to less than 15 minutes but are fortunately interspersed with lots of vintage footage from the production of the film.

Or June 19. :P

If it's not an HD-DVD Combo or something, I'm confused...

Why would they release a DVD with both a 16x9 anamorphically enhanced version, and presumably a 1.85:1 version that isn't anamorphic? Most DVDs out there use 16x9 (actually about 1.78:1) and 1.85:1 interchangeably, and I can't think of any reason whatsoever to include a non-anamorphic version if you already have the anamorphic version...

It want be a HD DVD combo. Fox is only supporting Blu-ray right now. However I haven't heard of a Blu-ray release for it. The 2 Disc "Family Fun Edition" is going to be released on DVD June 19th.

Hehe, I probably should have been more specific:

16x9 1.85:1 Matted Theatrical Version? True
1.33:1 Open-Matte Version? True

I sent the review to Luke a couple hours ago, so he should have it up either tonight or tomorrow.

Secret of NIMH Family Fun Edition

I couldn't find a thread expressly for NIMH--apologies if there is one.

Briefly I finally got the two disc edition fo this--I'm a HUGE HUGE HUGE NIMH fan--it's up there with Studio Ghibli's movies as my fave animated films of the 80s and the film means a lot to me.

I'm thankful for the DVD but still a bit disappointed. I expected more from the clean up. Do other people notice, or is it just me, how the image flickers a lot? Like almost like shadows? THis is shown on the widescreen, the full screen AND in clips from the film on the second disc featurette so I don't think it's just my copy. Check out around 7:30 with the bright sky etc for bits I mean--is this just stuff from the original film that can never be cleared?

Each time I rewatch I am amazed all over again with how much I love the film--also perhaps my fave animated film score (ie not songs but score) outside of Hisaishi's Miyazaki work

A good example of the flickering is at the start of chapter 4 around 10:25 I think it's fromt heoriginal film element it just seems odd that the restoration didn't correct this as it's throughout the film
