A beautiful trailer for "Song of the Sea":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0Ejpl3QFuU
An animated feature film from Oscar nominated Tomm Moore
SONG OF THE SEA tells the story of Ben and his little sister Saoirse -- the last Seal-child -- who embark on a fantastic journey across a fading world of ancient legend and magic in an attempt to return to their home by the sea. The film takes inspiration from the mythological Selkies of Irish folklore, who live as seals in the sea but become humans on land. SONG OF THE SEA features the voices of Brendan Gleeson, Fionnula Flanagan, David Rawle, Lisa Hannigan, Pat Shortt, Jon Kenny, Lucy O'Connell, Liam Hourican and Kevin Swierszsz. Music is by composer Bruno Coulais and Irish band Kíla, both of whom previously collaborated on The Secret of Kells.

An old article by Jim Hill from early January 2003 explaining why Treasure Planet flopped, WDFA considering abandoning 2D & the future of WDAS "he mentions Rapunzel & The Snow Queen"! I also like this quote from a WDFA insider:
"Look, if a piece of crap like 'Ice Age' can make $176 million during its domestic release, while something as sensational as 'Treasure Planet' has to struggle to pull in $35 million, clearly audiences' tastes have changed. So Disney has to change with the times. Otherwise, it risks losing its core audience."
The death of 2D animation at Disney started here. The rise of CGI films Shrek/Ice Age & Pixar, other than Lilo & Stitch & Spirited Away, 2D animated features had no chance.

Oh come on! That stupid article is like eleven years old.

Man, and I was getting better and more hopeful. But this thread is getting on my nerves. I wish this thread close, but noooo! This torturing hope killing is making my behavior more difficult. But you know what? I'm not going to let that stupid article or this miserable thread to ruin my hope. Hand drawn is not dead. It's in a deep sleep. 2D hand drawn animation will come back. I don't know when, I don't know how, but it'll come back eventually, whether you guys like it or not. So can we please ignore this thread and stay positive and hopeful? Thank you.

I said it before and say it again.
When we think of Disney we think traditional animation. More than anything is an art form. You don´t have to like all their movies to appreciate the animation.
And, with how everything is CGI today Disney would benefit GREATLY by going back to 2D. They´d be the only ones in USA to do it and would benefit from making this distance not just from their competitors but from Pixar as well.
We all know no matter what the Pixar movies are a success. So, why Disney doesn´t prove to everyone that they can be the studio that it was at their highest staying true to the medium they shoudn´t have never left.
Heck! If it were up to me I´d make it a law that Disney should only produce traditional animated movies with except when needed (Wreck it Ralph).

Except Disney would argue that every one of their films would need to be CG ("Oh, Rapunzel's hair needs to be realistic, Elsa's ice needs to feel real, Baymax needs to be squishy")
That is, an element of the story is enough to "warrant" being CG, not necessarily the plot.
But hey, I am an optimistic gal. I tend to agree that there is an opportunity cost (is that the term?) of Disney being the sole 2D producers as opposed to following the CG crowd. If they see it that way is another question.
Side tangent: how possible would it be to make an animated movie/ series that premieres online? Like, I mean like how House of Cards is on Netflix - could that ever be done for some (hand drawn) animated content? (I know Turbo F.A.S.T. was a Netflix original, but I am referring to content that is original.)

Don't tell me
this movie's CGI now too?! I probably would have gone to see it just so I could support
something that's hand-drawn. Can people not see from this why CGI is always getting in the way? And should it even matter if the movie is hand-drawn when the show itself is and kids already recognize it as a 2D cartoon? This is like if
The Simpsons Movie had to be CGI because it was in theaters.

According to animation historian Jerry Beck (who is friends with the SpongeBob crew and even wrote
an extensive book about the making of the show), the movie will be mostly hand-drawn with only a small portion of the film being SpongeBob on land in CG and this poster is simply misleading marketing.

*phew* What a relief.
Still, being a supposed sequel to the first movie, it still doesn't match up with what happened in the last one because when SpongeBob and Patrick were on land in that one they were still hand-drawn characters. But then again, I've never known
SpongeBob to be one of those cartoons that cares about continuity much anyway.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Plus, there is that episode where they go on land and they are live-action toy versions of themselves on sticks.

I thought that was clever. Maybe they did that joke twice then because I don't remember them being toys. Wasn't SpongeBob just a household washing up sponge? Patrick was just a plastic or dried starfish, and I can't remember what Sandy was.
I'm glad SpongeBob is flying the flag for hand drawn even if no one else is. Not that I'll see the film.

I'm not a fan, but I've heard that the movie was supposed to be the finale for the franchise, and the later episodes are mostly prequels.

hey there are some things to look forward to in the horizon for us 2d fans;
Song of the Sea which judging by the trailer looks gorgeous!
Spongebob if youre into it
The Congress if you want something trippier
The Lion Gaurd, I know its tv but so far the stills look great, probably the closest we'll get to classical Disney 90s style animation in a while...
and there's Salma Hayak's The Prophet which looks amazing. If only she can find a distibutor for it:

Yes, I can confirm that the first movie was indeed supposed to be the finale. But then the show got a 4th season, and well, that's the one where all the fans will tell you was the point when the quality writing of the first 3 seasons of
SpongeBob went down the toilet.

No, that is exactly the episode I'm talking about. I don't love the fact that SpongeBob will be CGI on land, I mean, this feels like The Smurfs, Yogi, Alvin & The Chipmunks, Garfield, Scooby-Doo, Underdog, and so on. But I guess having 2D characters interact with live-action environments and characters is not a thing that looks seamless to audiences anymore. Makes me wonder about that confirmed/confirmed-to-be-a-hoax Space Jam 2.

CG movies are nothing more than a cash grab to DreamWorks.

Well, it's a spin-off of a computer-animated series of movies. Why wouldn't it be in CG?
