Yeah, I thought BATB may have had a chance for Production Design. I loved The Shape of Water though, so I don't mind it winning instead. As for Costume Design, the moment that Emma Watson was ceded full control, any chance of winning this award was lost.

And just because there is magic in a film doesn't mean human emotions shouldn't ring true.
In Sleeping Beauty, Prince Phillip remarks that it's the 14th century to his father when he tells him he is going to marry a peasant girl instead of the Princess Aurora.
"Now, father, you're living in the past. This is the 14th century!"
Oh, I knew of that information, I meant where did they get the information that people got murderously upset over such simple things?

I am really glad Beauty and the Beast didn't win anything as I didn't want Disney's Divinity to rub any wins in my face. Plus the costumes were sometimes crappy and yes, Emma Watson took part in that. I love it's production design the most out of anything in the movie though, and wouldn't have minded it winning that, but The Shape of Water had an excellent look, too.

Sicoe Vlad wrote:...the narrator says, "And as punishment, she transformed him into a hideous beast, and she placed a powerful spell on the castle and all who lived there." There you clearly have it, the castle is under a spell, so that is why the villagers didn't remember it.

I have no idea why people analyze movies. Why can't they just enjoy them?
Well, it's that it sounds like the spell is just on the castle, not the village, so why do the villagers not know of the castle when it sounds specific to the castle only? And people analyze films as another aspect of enjoying them.

I don’t know. I always thought it was because the castle was under the spell. And even if it wasn’t said, I thought it was implied that it was the reason why the villagers didn’t remember it.

As for the analysis on movies, in my opinion, takes away from the enjoyment, especially when it’s focused on the negative aspects.

This is pretty much me exactly, even the part about not having seen Phantom Thread.

Well Sicoe, I understand what you mean. I still feel like the narration should have said the castle and the village were enchanted, but that's me. And I like analyzing films, even if it's negative. I don't even mind finding negative things in my favorite films. In fact, this 2017 Beauty and the Beast is a favorite film of mine, just really low, but I love its production design, some costumes, and the fairy tale story.

Wow, The Shape of Water won Best Picture as I predicted! I was right! :D

Everyone kept calling The Shape of Water a modern-day BATB, so in a way BATB did end up winning the coveted Best Picture award. It just so happened that it wasn't Disney's BATB. I was rooting for it, although I was afraid that Three Billboards would win since it won the Golden Globe and SAG as well.

The Shape of Water rightfully won; it had mostly practical effects and gorgeous physical sets compared to BatB's CGI-fest. I'm glad this mediocrity didn't win any Academy award, it will never be immortalized as a trailblazer unlike the original on whose success it rode. Additionally, "The Shape of Water" should teach the producers of these Disney remakes how a proper re-imagining of a well-known story/trope is done (in this case, Creature from the Black Lagoon), but I don't think they're open to learning.

Yes, if only this Beauty and the Beast had a non-CGI Beast, and maybe more appealing enchanted object deisgns (would that even have been possible?), and just been done more like The Shape of Water (which I also called a version of the story Beauty and the Beast like JeanGreyForever), then this film really could have been something!

I'm very happy for all The Shape of Water and Guillermo del Toro's success despite the transparent trolling above. I was surprised it won Best Picture though. I wonder if because the category was stacked that the other, more obvious winners divided the vote between one another and TSoW won out as a consequence. Any of them would have been deserving.

I noticed B&tB was used to advertise Christopher Robin in its new teaser. I'm guessing B&tB's going to be the success used in all their adverts until the "live-action" TLK is released. I'm skeptical about whether or not Aladdin will be as big as B&tB, although I hope it will be.

This is something I've been wondering as well. The animated Aladdin broke all records and clearly topped BATB, but the film hasn't aged as well as BATB has. It makes me wonder if Aladdin will get as far as the live-action Jungle Book (not quite a billion) or if it'll equal or even surpass the live-action BATB.

Well, it did gross over $1 billion. The only other remake to do that was Alice but it got a flop sequel and worse reviews than B&tB. I'm hoping Aladdin will pass the $1 billion mark too.

I liked the red variation of the B&tB logo.

Me, too.

About Aladdin, I'm kind of hoping the live-action film will reignite interest in the tale and the animated film. I'm always a little saddened that it doesn't get the love it used to--like TLM, B&tB, and TLK still do.

I finally got to watch The Shape of Water and I absolutely loved it! So glad it won Best Picture. In my eyes, the real BATB did end up winning Best Picture at the Oscars after all. The production design was absolutely amazing and meticulously planned, so I'm glad it stole the Oscar away from BATB. Frankly, even the ballroom scene in the The Shape of Water was better than the one in the live-action BATB. I wasn't expecting that scene at all, but there's simply no comparison between the ways it was executed in the two films.

The "real" Beauty and the Beast lost Best Picture back in 1992.

Really glad about your reaction, JeanGreyForever! I just finished watching Call Me By Your Name and I saw Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and the former was good but rather boring to me and the latter I found exciting and good drama but overall a bad story or at least a bad ending with a bad message. So I am very happy The Shape of Water deservingly won. However, I must say "the real" Beauty and the Beast to me is Disney's 1991 classic. But Silence of the Lambs is a better movie so it justly lost the award.

I really want to watch Call Me By Your Name. I've heard it's getting a sequel so I can't wait for that. Hopefully Armie Hammer won't be snubbed at the Oscars then.

This is hilarious! And it touches on a lot of my problems I had with the film. Thought you'd be interested, it's the official Nostalgia Critic review of Beauty and the Beast, 2017:

Also of note is it shows one picture I never remembered seeing, of the frontal portrait view of the Beast's original make-up idea, which I wish they had used! For those who don't want to watch the video for it, it's here:

I love how Doug said some of the sets of the film, though I loved them all, looked like they had sculptured "tentacle porn"!
