They used to air "Sleeping Beauty" on pirate cable TV here in Israel back in the late 80s and I remember being mesmerized by its beauty even though I was only 4-5 years old. And of-course being scared of the part where she's hypnotized :)

Today, I appreciate the artwork and the music but I wish Aurora and Phillip were as effective as the fairies, who were the supporting characters. And I wish they'd talked in the second half of the film! Anyway, as I grew up, Aurora really started to annoy me because of her passiveness. She literally just dances for a few minutes in the forest, being told she's a princess and then falls into slumber.

Still, a great Disney film.

They were actually thinking of giving Aurora black hair and making her look like this!:

My first thoughts:

"Damn that's hot! Is that Snow White...no, it's Aurora! She looks even hotter and more beautiful this way! Like exotically, darkly sexy! Snow White should have looked like this! Then she'd really be the fairest of them all!"

she looks fine the way she was in the final draft she looks regal and royal - snow white looks classy and timeless.

That looks distasteful

My favorite Disney-movie ever made under Walt himself.

The Blu-ray release is amazing, with incredible picture/colors and sound and it's loaded with bonus material. Simply the best Disney-release since Aladdin on DVD. Every Disney-fan should buy it, even if they do not have a Blu-ray player yet!

That's exactly what I did! I don't even have a Blu-ray player yet, but I made sure to get my DVD/Blu-ray combo copy. The DVD itself is amazing in terms of picture quality, can't wait to see it on Blu (hopefully I'll get a player by the end of the year).

So...what's going on in this storyboard?:

The hardcore tree is using the Force to repel Mally's flames.

At least one fairy shows to be powerful enough to not burn up in the path of Maleificent's fire blast.

I didn't really like Sleeping Beauty. Her character was way too similar too Cinderella's. She had almost no lines, and she's too much damsel in distress than spirited dreamer.

Yeah, they definitely look like birds, but there're are three of them. Maybe it's just the three fairies protecting Phillip from a blast of fire (like they did with the boulders, lightning, arrows, etc.). They're tied with the natural world, so maybe that's why there's a tree.

if that's case, good thing they remove it. it would make Phillip's fight even more pointless than it already was with three fugly hags doing all the damn work.

I agree with others in thinking that it's the fairies protecting Philip (again   ). There were drafts where we would have got to see their powers (such as in the 1952 outline on the Special Edition DVD, not the Platinum), so perhaps there was also the intention for them to transform into things? As well as the magic tree (Flora), there's also a couple of birds (Fauna) and a few clouds (Merryweather).

and a few clouds (Merryweather).
Now, the concept that they would change form sounds awesome. But clouds?

I actually really like the fairies from Sleeping Beauty. Phillip and Aurora were bland, and I'm not sure more screen time would've helped so much as emphasized it more.

Ooh, looks like an idea for a movie... a magical thin tree that true warriors strive for...
...yeah, I'm definitely not going to use that idea.

it seems more like a concept for a painting than anything else.

What a great idea Wonderlicious, that may be what it is! Wow, never would have thought!

But here is my take: The clouds I think is smoke from the fire being extinguished. I thought earlier drafts of the film gave the fairies birds (like Maleficent gets a bird) and there's even some concept art of them riding birds (it's cheesy and unnecessary, I am so glad they didn't do it). So, I was wondering if these were the birds.

Now the tree puzzle me. I thought of roses. Then I thought of maybe them turning the thorns to restored life again. The fact that the lines indicating a glow is mainly around the tree, and not on the birds or clouds, tells me it's about teh tree. They could have saved him from a fiery blast and also changed thorns into a tree? Like the boulders to bubbles, arrows to flowers... Eh?

Or...it's a magic tree and the fairies turned to birds by this point in the story (their way of becoming small and flying?). That's what it seems most like to me and it puzzles me what the tree means/is.

I love Sleeping Beauty! To be perfectly honest I was kind of on the fence when I rewatched it in 2010 (I hadn't seen it in at least 10 years so it was brand new to me) but since I bought a used copy in late 10' early 11' I can't get enough of it! I was thrown off on how little we actually got to see Aurora! Now I am totally satisfied with it (She was too hard to draw to make her all throughout the movie) She's my favorite princess design-wise. I love her hair & all it's lines and spirals. This movie is the ultimate fairy tale. Cinderella is my favorite princess movie because of how much of a lovely & beautiful person she was but Sleeping Beauty had it all! You had a villain who was evil to the core yet still likable, romance, action, comedy, & magic! haha The fairies are to die for! I especially have so much respect for this movie because like 99% was hand painted (minus the few xerox things with the dragon) & this movie was not an easy one to make if you guys saw the Platinum documentary! This movie deserves 5 stars :D *****

They were bland because all the attention was directed for the fairies. The did everything.

It wasn't even Sleeping Beauty. It was called "The Three Little Fairies and the Big Bad Sorceress."

The one moment Phillip had perfect opportunity to really shine was taken away by fairies again. One time(actually couple times really) Aurora could got more character development was.......

taken by the fairies.....making B-day cakes, clothing and cleaning....

I really want to like this film a lot but so much of those things really bothers me. At least Aurora is pretty enough for me to masturbate to.
