Is there ANY news on the possible release of SONG OF THE SOUTH? I can only watch my boot-leg copy so many times. And I am sick of this "never going to be released" crap!

Well they're not real. They're are bootlegs most likely made from a japanese laserdisc, although I'm not entirley sure.

Some one in Britain can enlighten us. The copy I have says "made in Great Britain" on the shrink wrap. It is in DTS 5.1 Stereo Surround (enhanced for Home Theaters), it is 1:85.1 Widescreen ratio, and has two short documentaries on the making of the film and it's premier. I was under the impression that this was legally released across the pond. It is Region Coded for ALL regions. It has Walt Disney all over it, and most bootleg copies don't.

I have over 50 Disney titles from Taiwan, and they don't say Disney anywhere on them except when the movie plays.

The DVD of "Song of the South" even has beautiful Disney artwork on the disc, so it isn't a shlock job.

Maybe someone can answer this puzzlement.

The only legal releases of Song of the South in the UK were on video tape. It's out of print now. Here's what the latest cover looks like:

It's never been released legally on DVD in the UK (nor anywhere else in the world). Legal releases are on video tape or laserdisc.

And the film should most certainly not be in widescreen. No matter how great it looks, your DVD is still a bootleg. The fact that it can be played in ALL regions is another typical property of a bootleg.

As a general rule of thumb, unless the source of the material is public domain or is from a small company, the "all" region code is usually a sign of a bootleg, no matter how nice the cover artwork and transfer might be. Bootlegs have gotten fancier and more official-looking over the years. Often, they even contain FBI warnings (just like a regular official release) to try to deter you from making a copy. How ironic is that?

Trust me, if there was an official DVD of Song of the South anywhere in the world, everyone here would know about it long before it was released.

Well I am from Britain and I can confirm basically what Anders M Olsson said, that it has only been released here on VHS.

I don't think anything official would ever say "made in Great Britain". It would probably say "Made in the U.K."

Also you say the DVD is widescreen? SOTS should be fullscreen!

Song of the South was made in 1946, but the first widescreen movie (I believe it was The Robe) was made in 1955.

Widescreen doesn't necessarily mean it was in Cinemascope. Widescreen processes can be anthing above 1:33.1. Check your Disney films that say 1:66.1 and 1:75.1.........and then it says Widescreen.

And you are right the shrink wrap (I kept it folded in the case for cases like this) say "Made in the U.K."............well, bootleg or not, it is a fabulous copy and I am keeping it...........I have a VHS copy made from the Japanese LaserDisc, and this DVD is far superior to that.

Can you describe the extras (if any) that your "fabulous" DVD has? Are they the '72 TV trailer, the '86 theatrical trailer, and the Johnny Mercer radio spots? Does the movie have subtitles? Does the DVD have an Easter Egg (Chapter 14)? Just curious...

Actually, there were a few widescreen movies made as early as 1930, but the process didn't catch on. The Big Trail and The Bat Whispers were two of the first films shot in 70mm. I don't know which one came first. There may also have been other experimental widescreen films before then.

The first modern widescreen film was neither The Robe nor Knights of the Round Table, but This is Cinerama. You might say that This is Cinerama jumpstarted the whole widescreen era in 1952. Cinemascope was an attempt to emulate the Cinerama effect using cheaper methods.

Sorry, but I don't follow you there. Has the movie been pillarboxed with black bars at the sides, cropped at the top and bottom, or has it been stretched to 1.85:1? Neither way would, IMHO, be appropriate for Song of the South.

I haven't ever seen it, but what I've heard, it isn't a very special movie. I don't know, because I don't usually expect much of old movies because they're.. Old.
