I guess the fact he's much taller than the boy next to him in that shot made me see him as an adult, but you must be right he's a teenager. I've noticed he has a bit of a moustache, like when it starts growing for the first time, so that's another clue he can't be very old. By the way, the character is called Ercole (Hercules in Italian), Raimundo is the actor who voices him.

That's one of the reasons why I like there's also a girl in the story. And I like that she's a also misfit and that's why she and the two boys connect.

Just especulation, but just in case: After watching the trailer and knowing more details about the story, now I think what you said it quite likely to happen. The film is very inspired by the director's childhood and he and his real friend parted ways when he decided to go to America to pursue his dream of becoming an artist. That and the way he talks about the film in interviews makes me think Luca and Alberto will also part ways at the end. Judging by the trailer, I'd say is quite clear Luca has feelings for the girl, so maybe he'll want to stay on land to be with her. Though, I don't know, if that's what actually happens, will there be a way for him to turn into a human indefinitely? Avoiding being in contact with water in front of other people for the rest of his life is going to be quite difficult, especially in a coastal village. And what about his parents? He's just a child, will he really leave them? Plus, that would be too similar to The Little Mermaid. Maybe the one who will want to stay is Alberto, since (like Enrico Casarosa's real friend) he has a difficult family situation. We'll see. I'm really curious about what the story will be.

Pixar’s “Luca” won’t play in theaters and instead is launching exclusively on Disney Plus, for no extra fee, on June 18.

I guess it'll be years before I see this then because I'm not paying $20+ for a Blu-ray to see a movie I don't even know I like. Thank God I was able to see Raya in theaters. This is the third PIXAR film to end up Disney+ only now, right?

Onward was at the theater right before the U.S. lockdown happened so technically that was not D+ only originally.

I wonder why Pixar = free on D+ and WDAS/live action = Premier Access.

I'm sad to be missing yet another major Disney animated film in theatres but there's no way theatres are safe here by then so at least I get to watch it for free

Perhaps PIXAR are more concerned with their record? Aside from The Good Dinosaur, they haven't had many flops, have they (asking because I don't follow that company that closely)? And all the films released right now will always have an asterisk beside them because of the pandemic. Whereas Disney animation is so old and has been up / down before that a few low intakes because of the pandemic isn't something they're concerned might harm their legacy. IDK, that doesn't sound like the answer, it's just a thought.

The Good Dinosaur didn't do that much worse than Cars 3, which didn't do that much worse than Cars, to be honest. (The Good Dinosaur, 2015: $332,207,671 || Cars 3, 2017: $383,930,656 || Cars, 2006: $461,991,867) But yeah, generally TGD is called out for being the only "flop" (makes me sad to say because it's one of my faves).

I am also scratching my head with Luca getting a Disney+ only release, with no charge. I just don’t understand cherry-picking these titles when the budgets are probably similar?

I mean, I rather it be on Disney+ with no extra charge but I just don’t get the angle here.

Just watched 30 minutes of Pixar's Luca. WOW! I was CRACKING UP (Vespas ). The visuals are absolutely stunning & the story so far is beyond heartwarming - currently DYING for more! Jacob Tremblay & Jack Dylan Grazer have great chemistry as Luca & Alberto right from the start..

As a mom, I can totally relate to Maya Rudolph's character. The scenes have me counting the moments until I can visit Italy in person. I cannot wait to see the rest of this charming story about going outside your comfort zone and enjoying the beauty of the world around you.

I am also pretty obsessed with Emma Berman's character, Giulia! Disney and Pixar's Luca is one to watch out for -- trust me! Coming exclusively to Disney+ on June 18th!

Been lucky enough to see a 30 minutes of Pixar's latest Luca, and gutted we won't get to see the movie on the big screen. It looks truly beautiful and will make you pine for a holiday, as well as delivering the typical Pixar imagination, humour and warmth.

GUYS! Today I watched the first 30 minutes of LUCA and *chef's kiss* I am already in LOVE. It's full of nostalgia that brought me back to my childhood and summertime escapades (yes even those mischievous moments I won't talk about). Well done Enrico Casarosa & team.

It also got me excited about life after this pandemic; being able to travel again, to experience new cultures, eat different foods, and to get lost in another country. Nothing I want more right now than to experience what Luca and his BFF Alberto did so far in the film.

Oh, and don’t think I didn’t see that little nod to Pietro Germi Enrico Casarosa.

Got the chance to watch the first 30 minutes of #PixarLuca and unsurprisingly it’s a visual treat brimming with heart, a nostalgia for the adventures of childhood friendships and unique world-building and Jacob Tremblay and Jack Dylan Grazer are the perfect lead pair...

While it doesn’t seem like it’ll reach the high bar set by @Pixar’s last outing, @PixarSoul, it does certainly look to be another sure fire hit for the animation house.

Just watched 30 minutes of footage from Pixar’s upcoming Luca, and it’s gorgeous. The characters, the colours, the environments... can’t wait to see the whole thing.

It struck me how incredibly well the characters’ expressions convey their thoughts and emotions even beyond the script, which was both touching and made me laugh out loud at points.

I saw 30 minutes of Pixar's Luca. While the animation is beautiful and I like that the film serves as a love letter to Italian culture, I’m not sold on the story or characters. They just feel very generic to me. Curious to see the rest but I am currently underwhelmed.

I've updated my last post with more reactions. People are describing Luca as charming and a love letter to Italy, and are especially praising the visuals, the humor, Jacob Tremblay's performance, and the friendship and chemistry between the two leads. There's only one critic who's not impressed with the film so far. It's the last reaction I posted.

• I believe the artbook cover hasn't been posted here, right? Here it is. The artwork is by Daniel López Muñoz, the same artist who made the first concept art released for the film of the two protagonists jumping into the water from a cliff.

• Animation on the film has finished. This is the first Pixar film animated completely from home, right? If I'm not mistaken, most of the animation on Soul was made before lockdown.

It happened … We finaled the last animation shot this afternoon! Pazzesco. And all from home. It’s surreal and bittersweet.

• According to the director, there are no current plans of releasing a short alongside Luca.


• He also says that the composer (and probably more details about the movie) will be revealed this week.

Now, titles like Soul and Luca are, in Disney's eyes, a harder sell in a crowded theater landscape and easy picks for Disney+ Originals. Fans can only hope that this doesn't discourage Pixar from making more original titles, or that Disney only sees sequels, remakes, and spin-offs as worthy of theatrical distribution.

Um, Pixar films have historically done REALLY well at the box office, so I am super-surprised at this. I'm sad that the employees are sad and don't feel that Disney is appreciating their efforts. We've been wondering here for a while why the Pixar films are free. I'd pay the $30 for them.

Me too. I've been wondering why they're free as well. It doesn't make much sense to me. And you're right, Pixar films tend to do really well at the box office, so the reason the article gives is not convincing.

Also, it's weird because I've long felt that The Walt Disney Co. treats Pixar as their A studio and WDAS as the B studio. I'm not sure if that is accurate or just my mistaken impression, but I certainly got those vibes throughout the years!

I think they're on equal terms now, what with Disney Animation's recent success with Frozen, Zootopia, Big Hero 6, etc.

Although it's funny that I'm now seeing wild conspiracy theories online from people thinking Soul and Luca heading straight to Disney+ means they don't care about Pixar anymore (this despite Bob Chapek saying how ecstastic he was with Soul's viewership numbers on D+) and want to prop up Disney Animation instead, when the conspiracy theory on this specific forum has long been that Disney shows favouritism towards Pixar over Disney Animation. Make up your mind, Internet! lol

People have their own biases and conspiracy theories, it doesn't really matter what is the truth.

In my opinion, the reason Pixar is for free while WDAS is not is because Pixar is more adult oriented - as in most adults will prefer to watch a Pixar film rather than a WDAS one, I've seen this a lot in other places and IRL. This forum is unique for its preference of WDAS to Pixar and its Pixar hate (though to me it seems that Revival WDAS gets the same amount of hate so IDK). So anyway when you take that into consideration that adults like Pixar more and that some adult don't have kids, it is less likely that someone will pay $30 if they're the only ones in the household, so it's better to use Pixar films as a means to boost subscriptions number just like they did with Hamilton, since they are less "commercialized" than WDAS or even Marvel for that matter. Of course that's just my theory, I actually have a feeling that if it were a sequel to Toy Story or Incredibles rather than an original film, they would probably have them cost $30 as well.

The last one shows that Ercole, the film's villain, has two friends. I guess one of them is the boy who was with him in the trailer. They don't seem to have too good intentions in this image. Also, Giulia is carrying something behind her bike; I wonder what it could be. And judging by the book he's holding, it seems Luca is interested in astronomy, right?
